gram we are co-sponsoring
on Feb. 22:
We need your help in
changing the face of the
legal profession. We are
enlisting your help in en-
couraging, informing, and
supporting the next cadre
of young lawyers.
The law schools of North
Carolina Central and
UNC-Chapel Hill have
partnered with the Na-
tional Association of Black
Lawyers, and the North
Carolina and American
Bar Associations in a pro-
gram to encourage stu-
dents of color to pursue
their interest in a legal ca-
reer. We would like stu-
dents to share their ex-
periences, their suc-
cesses, their disappoint-
ments, and their triumphs
over disappointment and
adversity.
The program will be held
on the main campus of the
University of North Caro-
lina on February 22, 2003.
The daylong workshop
will be held in Toy Lounge
in Dey Hall, beginning at
10:00 am and ending
around 3:00 pm. Students,
attorneys, law school ad-
ministrators,
test preparation
experts and
many others will
be present to
answer ques-
tions and offer
perspective to
students. This
program will
feature students
with a wide
range of racial, ethnic,
professional, religious,
and socio-economic diver-
sity.

Calling All Students: A Program to Promote
Diversity in the Legal Profession
::- Thanks to all the 1L stu-
dents who completed the Office of Academic Support Ques-
tionnaire in January on our Fall 2002 workshops and your
wish list for Spring 2003. We appreciate you input! We are
using your comments to develop workshops for this semes-
ter. The most popular requests were for more on Essay
Writing (61 out of 82 surveys returned, or 74%), Exam
Preparation (54 responses, or 66%), and answering Multi-
ple Choice questions (41 responses, 50%). Only 14 (17%)
requested a program addressing Stress Management (you
must be handling stress well!) and 13 (16%) wanted a pro-
gram on time management. We are planning two exam
preparation workshops with your substantive professors for
later this month (before midterms), so stay tuned! If you
have any additional suggestions please feel free to stop by
and see us. N. Perry and P. Potter.

Graduating 3Ls and 4LEs!
1. An interpreter for the hearing impaired will be
provided for family members attending this
year's graduation if needed. If needed,
arrangements need to made as soon as possible.

2. Graduation Pictures will be taken Monday,
February 17, 2003 and Tuesday, February 18,
2002. The photographer will be here from 3:00 -
6:30 pm on both days. The sitting fee is $12.95.
This cost includes up to four poses and one 1 1X14
color print of the entire class. All delivered
within 65 days! Packages may be purchased from
the proofs. There will be a sign-up sheet passed
around during Statutory Interpretation.

Board reviewed last week so that you can properly
plan for this semester.
Students: The SBA Executive Board still needs a few

S:n:zcsl:n: The North Carolina Journal of Interna-
tional Law and Commercial Regulation (ILJ) will be
hosting its annual symposium on Saturday, February
15, 2003, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill School of Law. The daylong event will begin at
9:00 A.M. This year's symposium entitled Interna-
tional Accounting Standards in the Wake of En-
ron, will examine and contrast U.S. and international
accounting standards and their influence on corpo-
rate governance. Admission is free for students and
lunch will be provided, however, pre-registration is

Committee. The statement is
meant to address various
con cerns.
Lawyers are expected to ad-
here to the highest stan-
dards of professional behav-
ior. The School of Law ex-
pects its students to adhere
to high standards of behav-
ior during their legal educa-
tion and to avoid even the
appearance of impropriety.
Because law school is a stu-
dent's first step toward be-
coming a member of the
bar, the Student Code of
Professional Responsibility
expressly prohibits unpro-
fessional conduct.
Prohibited conduct includes
arriving late for class, leav-
ing class without the profes-
sor's advance permission,
talking or whispering to fel-
low students or using cell
phones during class, eating or
drinking (except in approved
containers) in Classrooms
100, 102 and the Moot Court-
room, talking loudly in the
Law School lobby, or in the
hallways while class is in ses-
sion, violating rules or circu-
lation policies of the Law Li-
brary, and speaking disre-
spectfully to faculty, adminis-
trators, staff or fellow stu-
dents. Persistent or flagrant
instances of unprofessional
conduct will be reported to
the Law School Academic Dis-
ciplinary Committee and may
result in suspension or expul-
sion.

The :-vdline for applications for NCCU Law School Summer
Judicial Clerkship/Public lInerest stipends is Aprol 15, 2003.
The stspends will be awarded to first and second year st-
dents who secure positions in pubic interest law or judicial
clerkships for summer 2003. The stipends pay $1.500.00. The
judge or public interest orgaization can be of your choice
and does not have to be located !a North Carolina. Approxi-
mately eight stipends will be awarded. Applicatious are due

PHI ALPHA DELTA NEWS
On Saturday, September 20, 2003, the Watkins Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta international
law fraternity attended the District Conference at Wake Forest School of Law. Phi Alpha
Delta is the world's largest law fraternity that is dedicated to promoting professional
competency, service, and achievement within the legal profession. The conference
participants presented workshops on reactivating an inactive chapter, activities for a
chapter, and bridging the gap between law school and the working world. Shavonnie
Ray (President), Arin Jones (Vice President), and
Ashley Cannon (Clerk) attended the conference
and presented on membership and retention of
members. The Watkins Chapter additional execu-
tive board includes Anika Hardmon (Treasurer),
Mary Garganus (Marshall), and Kimberly McInnis
(Jr. Marshall). The Nationa on vention will be held
in Los Angeles, California on August 5, 2004.

Unprecedented Weather Rocks
the Legal Eagle Nest!
The Law School academic
year 2002-2003 will go down
in history as one unprece-
dented in terms of bad
weather playing havoc with
the Law School's schedule.
The ice storm in December
2002 was the worst ever in
North Carolina history. Stu-
dents, faculty and administra-
tors, of course, remember it
for when it occurred: the day
before fall semester finals
were supposed to begin!
The Law School was without
power for two days,
and getting infor-
mation out to stu-
dents and faculty
was difficult be-
cause so many peo-
ple in the area
were without
power or phone
lines for several
days. Duke and
UNC-CH law
schools had similar
communication
problems, but those
schools did not lose power
in their law buildings. in
January saw another
bout of bad weather,
this time, snow, and
classes were suspender
for a day as the Durhan
area was paralyzed
once again.
Finally, most recently,
Sunday and Monday,
February 16 and 17, the
"President's Day Storm
hit the area. Originally i
feared to be another ice
storm on the scale of the De-
cember event, this mini-ice
storm nonetheless shut down
the Triangle area and much of
North Carolina with approxi-
mately an inch of frozen sleet
and ice for two days.
As an added bonus of the bad
weather, Tuesday, February
18, as students, faculty and
administrators arrived at the
Law School Building, they
discovered a pipe had burst
in the basement, and a few
inches of water threatened to

This weather-related event
has prompted the delivery of
this Weekly by e-mail for the
first time to all of the students

Announcements for
Graduating 3Ls and 4LEs!
1. Graduation Pictures are scheduled to still be
taken Tuesday, February 18, 2002. The
photographer will be here from 3:00 - 6:30
pm. We will see about scheduling another
make-up day because of the bad weather..
The sitting fee is $12.95. This cost includes up
to four poses and one 11X14 color print of the
entire class. All delivered within 65 days!
Packages may be purchased from the proofs.
2. An interpreter for the hearing impaired will
be provided for family members attending
this year's graduation if needed. If so,
arrangements need to made as soon as

All Student Leaders: You should each see Dean Lay-
elle about your budget requests which the SBA Ex-
ecutive Board reviewed two weeks ago so that you
can properly plan for this semester. This is especially
important if you plan to TRAVEL!
Academic Support: The Office of Academic Support
will sponsor a workshop entitled "The Combination
Exam: What It Is and What It Isn't" on February 24th at
noon in the Moot Courtroom. Associate Dean Hill and
Professor Green will discuss practical points for the
Combination exam. Stay tuned. If you have any

Tutorial Notice. Reminder to students who participate
in tutorials in Classrooms 100, 102 and the Moot Court
room. Eating or drinking (except in approved con-
tainers) - even water - is prohibited in these rooms.
The rules are NOT suspended simply because a Pro-
fessor is not present. Please remember that eating or
drinking in these rooms is not only a violation of the
Student Code, but it may also adversely affect our
ability to hold tutorials in these rooms. Thank you.

BASKETBALL STARS!
This winter, Assistant Law School Dean Steve Douglas '82 coached
his son Eddie's basketball team in a Raleigh Parks and Recreation
League at Lake Lynn Community Center. Imagine Dean Douglas'
surprise when, on Saturday, January 18, he found his team up
against a "red" team that had two familiar players!
Dean Douglas is shown in the picture on the left posing with his son
Eddie (who does not appear too excited to be posing with girls!)
and Amanda and Mary Austin Tugman, daughters of Sarah Tugman,
Law School Director of Law School and Foundation Relations.
While the two teams had a heated battle, Dean Douglas' team came
out on top. Dean Douglas admitted that the two girls played well
and privately acknowledged that he intended to draft them on his
team next year.

out.
The reasons for this
are many. Obviously,
this will cut down on
paper waste. There
will still be a few
"hard" copies of The
Weekly posted at vari-
ous locations around
the school. But, with
an electronic version,
students can simply
store their copies on
their computers, or
run them out, if neces-
sary.
The Weekly will look
more attractive, be-
cause it will retain its
color features on e-
mail. Photos will look
better and be crisp.
The Weekly will be
available in a more
timely fashion, and

Environmental Law Society Career Symposium To Be
Held Thurs., Jan. 30!
Internship and Career Opportunities!
The Environmental Law Society (ELS) is pleased to announce a
fantastic opportunity for all law students to find out about job and
internship opportunities in the environmental law field. ELS is
hosting the Environmental Law Career Symposium on Thurs., Jan.
30, 2003 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom. We have an
impressive panel of prominent speakers who will discuss their work
and answer student questions.
Students can informally mingle and network with the speakers
during the last segment of the event... and devour a generous spread
of food and beverages. Keep in mind that many of these speakers
represent organizations that also hire students for non-
environmental jobs - so, this is an opportunity for all! We

CAREER SERVICES INFORMATION NO WA VAIIABLE ON TWEN!
A page has been created on TWEN for the posting of Career Services
information and employment announcements. The "course" is titled Ca-
reer Services. No passwords are needed to access any of the page areas.
During the course of this semester, the posting of employment announce-
ments on the bulletin board will be phased out and instead posted on
TWEN. This will enable you to access the announcements and other infor-
mation around the clock. This new format should be user-friendly and
more convenient. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don't
hesitate to contact the Career Services Office.
