Note about Professor Joyce A. Hughes
In 1971, Professor Joyce A. Hughes became the nation's first Black woman to be appointed a tenure-track
law professor at a predominantly white law school when she joined the faculty at the University of
Minnesota Law School. However, in 1951, twenty years prior, Sybil Marie Jones Dedmond became the
first Black woman to be a tenure-track law professor at any accredited law school in the United States.
She taught from 1951 - 1964 at North Carolina Central University School of Law, a historically Black
law school. The North Carolina Central University Law Review is honored to collaborate with Professor
Hughes to highlight and celebrate the significant contributions Black women have made to legal
scholarship and the legal profession.
