Background: With over 2 million foreign residents in Japan and the increased number of visitors from abroad, Japan must provide healthcare for the non-Japanese speaking population. The government has also implemented a plan to establish 30 medical institution hubs in and around the larger metropolis cities to have language services for visitors who are expected to come for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Though a small growing body of research has investigated communication difficulties between foreign patients and the healthcare institutions, there is much to be addressed. Our current study approaches this issue through a narrative-based approach. Method: Two researchers individually interviewed a total of 13 foreign residents who agreed to participate in interviews that were audio-recorded. Three main questions were asked: previous medical experiences in their own home country, reason for living in Japan (primarily Fukui) and their experiences and insights from their encounters with the healthcare system. These recorded sessions were transcribed and analyzed into categories of concerns expressed through the interviews. Results: Experiences were categorized into five main areas: 1) Privacy and confidentiality, 2) Cultural differences, 3) Mismatch in expectations, 4) Differences in medical systems, and 5) Language-related issues both spoken and written. Conclusion: This study found that while language problems exist, there are other concerns that make accessing healthcare in Japan a challenge for non-Japanese speaking residents. Previous experiences as well as cultural expectations of what should occur within a healthcare setting

Improvement of the Detection Method of Marine Debris Using Satellite Remote Sensing

    No full text
The flow of marine debris in the ocean causes extensive damage to coastal environments. It is considered important to understand the flow of marine debris in the ocean for environmental research purposes. The small size of most marine debris in the ocean means that marine debris cannot be confirmed directly, even when a high-spatial-resolution satellite image is used. Thus, in order to extract candidate pixels containing possible marine debris, pixels with spectra that differ from those of the surrounding ocean were identified. As a first step towards monitoring marine debris, a method for identifying marine debris floating on the ocean was proposed using the spectral angle mapper (SAM) algorithm in n-dimensional space corresponding to satellite spectral bands. The validity of the method using SAM was also shown. In this paper, a new method to discriminate marine debris from white crested waves is proposed using a distance from origin in n-dimensional scatter diagram. Moreover, a method to identify marine debris using pan-sharpened images is also discussed

About improving the city office is being considered at present at Sakai city. In this study, we investigated which is concerned with visiting frequency, purpose, means of transport, the residents feeling issues, and future prospects from the questionnaire survey of the visitor to the Sakai city office. In addition to this, we investigated by an on-the-spot survey of Situation of utilization in parking space. The leading conclusions are as follows: 1) The residents have expectations of the future’s Sakai city office; the facility for the aged person and the families with small children, easy to understand sign system and the displays, as soon as possible to cope with occurrence of a disaster, and many parking space; 2) The maximal parking rate of the main building parking space was 77.8%, and the 2nd annex parking space was 88.6%. There was many parkingin both parking space at less than 30 minutes

Environmental Efforts Made by Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. – Reasons of Ranking First for Global Warming Countermeasures in Japanese Food Industry –

In this paper, the authors drew attention to “Japanese Food Company Ranking for Global Warming Countermeasures” recently published by WWF Japan. Especially, the countermeasures against global warming was discussed on, by particularizing Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. ranked first in the ranking. Comparing with Kirin Holdings and the other companies, the authors grappled with the difference of ranking. Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between main investments (cumulated amounts) on environmental protection and current earnings in this company. The result of regression analysis suggests that some investments significantly affect the current earnings

A Survey of Private Japanese University Students’ Attitudes Towards English Education

Motivation researchers have suggested a multitude of constructs, each of which propose that there are several forces residing within a person that drive them to do the things they do, all of which have varying implications when it comes to learning a second language. This study, following Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System construct of motivation, investigated a group of 85 university students in Japan, currently studying English. As part of a larger project using mixed methods and various angles of investigation, this study used qualitative measures (one-on-one interviews) to elicit personalized and individual responses from the participants. Upon analysis of the interview data, it was revealed that a plurality of the participants were motivated to learn English for reasons Dörnyei calls the Ought-to L2 Self, i.e., they believed they should study to “meet expectations or to avoid possible negative outcomes” (Dörnyei, 2010b, p. 80)
