Evaluating industry-inspired pair programming communication guidelines with undergraduate students
A set of industry-inspired pair programming guidelines have been derived from qualitative examinations of expert pairs in order to aid novice programmers with their intra-pair communication. This research describes the evaluation of these guidelines with a set of student pairs, and demonstrates how novice pairs who were exposed to the guidelines were more comfortable communicating within their pairs
Practising equality? Issues for co-creative and participatory practices addressing social justice and equality
We increasingly find co-creativity and participation as central aspects of practices across art and design (including architecture). The politics of social justice and equality continue to underlie and inspire these practices. The discourse on Web 2.0 addresses co-creativity and participation, but from quite different perspectives. One of the key aspects of these discourses is the extent to which they recognise context as a critical factor. The other critical factor is the understanding of equality, not in terms of a general social aspiration, but rather as a function within a creative practice. We believe that practices can offerdistinctive understandings to debates on social justice and equality. Practitioners seeking social justice and equality describe the importance of involving participants and co-creators, not through evenness of participation, but rather through discernment opening out to larger audiences
ART ± EDUCATION:the paradox of the ventriloquist’s soliloquy
When we speak of art education are we trying to make sense of something by means of something else, just as a ventriloquist speaks with the mouth of a puppet to make us believe that he is having a dialogue with someone else, when in effect he is speaking to himself? This paper discusses how art education could only flourish as an act of approximation as it rejects the incremental and constructivist assumptions that have turned art and education into transactional instruments. Discussing art and education’s immanent relationship, this paper argues that art education is only necessary by force of the accidents that characterise it. Four scenarios, here identified in what the author calls the paradox of the ventriloquist’s soliloquy in art education, illustrate this argument. In discussing how this comes about, this paper makes reference to HernerSaeverot’s concept of indirect pedagogy and Charles Garoian’s prosthetic pedagogy
Continuous wave terahertz radiation from an InAs/GaAs quantum-dot photomixer device
Generation of continuous wave radiation at terahertz (THz) frequencies from a heterodyne source based on quantum-dot (QD) semiconductor materials is reported. The source comprises an active region characterised by multiple alternating photoconductive and QD carrier trapping layers and is pumped by two infrared optical signals with slightly offset wavelengths, allowing photoconductive device switching at the signals’ difference frequency ~1 THz.(C) 2012 American Institute of Physics
The creation of FRONTEX and the politics of institutionalisation in the European Union External Borders Policy
In a context of high politicization, if not securitization, of asylum and migration in Europe, the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the EU – also known under its acronym FRONTEX – was created in 2004. Its activities have drawn a significant amount of attention and have been heavily criticised by human rights and pro-migrant groups. In contrast with most of the literature on FRONTEX, which focuses on its activities, this article examines the institutional issues associated with the creation and the work of FRONTEX, that is, the reasons for which Member States chose to create an agency, rather than establish another form of cooperation, and the specific mechanisms that they have put in place to exercise control over the activities of the Agency. The article, which is theoretically informed by the literature on European agencies, unveils a complex institutionalisation process, characterised by the existence of various models for increased cooperation and political struggles amongst the actors involved in the policy-making process
The information gap in corporate annual reports:evidence from Egypt
This study explores whether an information gap exists for six typesof corporate disclosure in Egypt, where International Accounting Standards(IAS) apply but penalties for non-compliance are limited. It also investigateswhether low compliance with mandatory disclosure can be explained by lowlevels of demand for this type of information among local financial analysts. The results identify a significant gap between actual disclosure practices ofcompanies for various types of disclosure and market perceptions of thispractice. Our findings also suggest that low compliance with disclosurerequirements in Egypt is not driven by low levels of demand from localfinancial analysts, because these items of information are perceived as usefulfor investment decision making
FutureEverything: ArtsAPI:Research & Development Report
ArtsAPI was a research and development project on how to better understand and evidence the connectivity and connections that arts organisations generate between things, people and events. The outcome is a proof of concept business modelling and analytic tool to enable arts organisations to generate new insight from data.ArtsAPI was led by 3 partners:FutureEverything, is an art and innovation organisation that conceived and led the project; Swirrl, is a leading linked open data (LOD) developer with a long track record of partnership with FutureEverything; and University of Dundee, is a leading research university with a strong academic team who offered expertise in analysing networks of people, organisations and things.A wider group of arts partners were collaborators in the project. These were: Blast Theory Red Eye Culture 24 Forma Warwick Arts Contact Theatre Islington Mill BalticWhat is it?ArtsAPI is a web application and an ambitious and experimental research and development project. The ArtsAPI web application is designed to enable arts organisations to show the value and impact generated through their networks. We believe that many arts organisations generate significant value through the relationships they create and sustain, but far too often this is not articulated or evidenced sufficiently to leverage insight, support and opportunities. ArtsAPI uses data to give organisations new insight into their relationships both internally and externally. This insight can be usedfor business planning, marketing, programming and as a way of demonstrating your impact. The tool uses email data gathered from team members to generate the following: A visualisation of your network both on an individual and organisational level A list of all the organisations and individuals you are connected to both on an individual and organisational level A clustering tool which will allow you to analyse how well connected you are to different sectors (some manual input is required) A clustering tool which will allow you to analyse how well connected you are to different cities and countries (some manual input is required) It gives you insight into Keywords that you use in email exchanges. These keywords can indicate the types of activities of individuals in your network It gives you insight into the Social Network Analysis measure of ‘out degrees’ – a measure which demonstrates whom within the network is distributing information It gives you insight into the Social Network Analysis measure of ‘in degrees’ – a measure which demonstrates whom within a network is receiving information from other nodes It gives you insight into the Social Network Analysis measure of ‘Degree Centrality’ – a measure which demonstrates which nodes are central to a network in terms of control over information flow It gives you insight into the Social Network Analysis measure of ‘Density’ – a measure that gives some insight into the speed of information handling within the networkOutcomesThe main outcome of this ambitious and exploratory project is a proof of concept web application. This has been trialled and showcased through a roadshow, and the project themes have been communicated through an art commission. The ambitious and experimental research and development process has generated new findings, and also revealed significant challenges that further development will need to address
'The aerodrome':art, heritage and landscape at former RAF Coltishall
English Heritage and others are often called upon to record historic aviation sites, along with a range of other comparable (in scale and complexity) former military and industrial places. Recording typically takes place once the site is abandoned and prior to its redevelopment. RAF Coltishall (Norfolk, UK) presented a rare opportunity to record the site while it remained in use, and to continue to record it during the period of drawdown and closure; to watch as things were packed away and as families left. This seemed too good an opportunity to miss, and to take full advantage English Heritage decided to share the task, gathering together a team of artists and archaeologists whose interests were focused on the types of material culture and methodological issues which Coltishall presented in abundance. In this article we describe the background to this project, the methodology we developed, and ultimately our various (and at times very different) responses to the site
Design, Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Trypanosoma brucei Trypanothione Synthetase Inhibitors
Trypanothione synthetase (TryS) is essential for the survival of the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei, which causes human African trypanosomiasis. It is one of only a handful of chemically validated targets for T. brucei in vivo. To identify novel inhibitors of TbTryS we screened our in-house diverse compound library that contains 62?000 compounds. This resulted in the identification of six novel hit series of TbTryS inhibitors. Herein we describe the SAR exploration of these hit series, which gave rise to one common series with potency against the enzyme target. Cellular studies on these inhibitors confirmed on-target activity, and the compounds have proven to be very useful tools for further study of the trypanothione pathway in kinetoplastids.</p
