El teatro como arma de combate durante la guerra civil en la España sublevada (Valladolid, 1936-1939)
Get PDFDuring the Spanish Civil War, both factions used propagandistic theater plays in order to indoctrinate and call up the audience. Up to twenty different plays were performed inValladolid, a city within the nationalist territory; all of them had a large ideological content and the vast majority were poor-quality comedies advocating the rebel ideology in which the enemy was denigrated with the objective of inflaming the audience. Despite the interest of the authorities, these plays were not as popular among the population as it was expected, an interesting fact considering that the population tried to ease the stress caused by the war through leisure.Durantela Guerra Civilespañola el teatro se utilizó en ambos bandos como arma de combate mediante la representación de obras de propaganda destinadas a la movilización y adoctrinamiento de la población. En Valladolid, ciudad enclavada enla Españasublevada, se estrenaron veinte obras de alto contenido ideológico, principalmente comedias de escasa calidad, que buscaban denigrar al enemigo, sublimar el ideario de los sublevados y provocar la exaltación de los espectadores. Pese al interés de las autoridades por su divulgación no obtuvieron la respuesta esperada de un público que, precisamente, se refugiaba en el ocio para evadirse de la guerra

With the end of hostilities, the Franco dictatorship organized the Military Service of Bridges and Roads in Catalonia (SMPCC), but it was devoted to the reconstruction of damaged bridges between 1939 and 1943. To carry out repairs, had the estimable collaboration of prisoners of war and political prisoners framed in various units of labor. In a moment of lack of human and material resources, their collaboration with Public Works headquarters and provincial councils allowed the restoration of communications in Catalonia.La Guerra Civil provocó la destrucción de centenares de puentes en Cataluña. Con el final de las hostilidades, la dictadura franquista organizó el Servicio Militar de Puentes y Caminos de Cataluña (SMPCC), unidad que se dedicó a la reconstrucción de los puentes dañados entre 1939 y 1943. Para llevar a cabo las reparaciones, contó con la estimable colaboración de los prisioneros de guerra y presos políticos encuadrados en diversas unidades de trabajos forzados. En un momento de falta de recursos humanos y materiales, su colaboración con las Jefaturas de Obras Públicas y Diputaciones provinciales permitió el restablecimiento de las comunicaciones en Cataluña

When it comes to a collective discourse, as in the Spanish Civil War occurs, the ‘self’ becomes ‘us’ and the ‘other’, or ‘the others’, strange agents who would have disturbed the community peace with the impunity of certain anonymity. However, elements as the role of victim conceded to the civilian population in contexts of brutalisation, or the consideration of the community as a seamless and isolated stable equilibrium, hide a complex and fragile map of cracks which lace threats to stagger with the conflict’s outbreak.La autoexculpación y la culpabilización del otro es un rasgo común en los relatos bélicos, de trauma o violencia. A menudo, cuando se trata de un discurso colectivo, como ocurre en la guerra civil española, el «yo» pasa a ser el «nosotros», mientras que el «otro» o «los otros» serían agentes extraños que habrían perturbado la paz comunitaria con la impunidad de cierto anonimato. No obstante, elementos como el papel de víctima concedido a la población civil en el contexto de brutalización o, por otro lado, la consideración de la comunidad como un equilibrio estable sin fisuras aislado de su entorno esconden un complejo y frágil mapa de grietas cuyo encaje amenaza con tambalearse tras el estallido del conflicto

Due to the conflict of Ifni-Sahara (1957-1958) Spain lost Cape Juby and a part of Ifni’s province after being attacked by Morocco. Ifni’s remaining territory was finally handed over in 1969. [EN]Abstract: This paper examines the career of military physician Edward Bright Vedder from the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) to the end of the Second World War (1945). Vedder helped discover the cure for beriberi while simultaneously promoting chemical weapons, calling the former a “needless sacrifice” and the latter “humane.” He believed both chemical warfare and beriberi saved lives. Drawing on Vedder’s unpublished memoir, Fifty Years in Medicine, and the canon of just war theorists, this work offers a case study of how one military physician used Western military theory, specifically the principle of double effect (or collateral damage), to rationalize the problem of dual loyalty. Vedder contribuyó a descubrir la cura para el beriberi al tiempo que promovía las armas químicas, denominando al primero “innecesario sacrificio” y a las segundas “humanas.” El creyó que tanto la guerra química como el beriberi salvaban vidas. Get PDFSeveral Czech films has showed the impact that had the Nazi occupation on a population characterized by the ethnic and cultural diversity. Of equal way, numerous films have showed the active participation of the Czechs in the fight against the 3rd Reich. As well as the accomplishment of one of the most amazing military actions of the Second World War: Heydrich\u27s murder. In this article I analyze the cinematographic reconstruction of these events: the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, the collaborators\u27 role and resistant too, the Nazi racial policy impact, and the active role of the Czechs in the British armed forces and his contribution to the allied effort; confirming the information contributed by the films with historical information.La producción cinematográfica checa ha mostrado el impacto que tuvo la ocupación nazi sobre una población caracterizada por la diversidad étnica y cultural. De igual manera, numerosos films han mostrado la activa participación de los checos en la lucha contra el III Reich, así como la realización de una de las acciones militares más asombrosas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial: el asesinato de Heydrich. En este artículo se analiza la reconstrucción cinematográfica de estos aspectos: la ocupación de Checoslovaquia, el papel de colaboradores y resistentes, la política racial nazi, y el papel activo de los checos en las fuerzas armadas británicas y su contribución al esfuerzo aliado, cruzando los datos aportados por los films con datos históricos contrastados

Get PDFThis article exposes the validity of the “passive resistance” concept as applied to the religious, educative, and social assistance activities that were developed by the Jewish communities of theWarsawandLodzguettos during the Second World War. Our goal is to prove that such activities were performed as conscious and voluntary forms of resistance against the absolute degradation and dehumanization to which they were subjected by the Nazi aggressor. Thus, the passive resistance acts respond to the idea expressed by Haim Kaplan, “Since we can not live with the allowed, we will live with the forbidden”.Este artículo expone la validez del concepto «resistencia pasiva» aplicada a las actividades religiosas, educativas y de ayuda social desarrolladas por las comunidades judías de los guetos de Varsovia y de Łódź durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El objetivo es probar que dichas actividades fueron ejercidas como formas conscientes y voluntarias de resistencia ante la más absoluta degradación y deshumanización a las que fueron sometidos por el agresor nazi. Los actos de resistencia pasiva respondían así a la máxima expresada por Haim Kaplan, «Ya que no podemos vivir con lo permitido, viviremos con lo prohibido»
