“History of Civilization”. The orientalism in the Infant Culture at 1960’s
Full text linkEl objetivo de este artículo es analizar las representaciones orientalistas dentro del álbum de figuritas “Historia de las civilizaciones” de la revista Anteojito de la editorial Julio Korn S.A. en tanto artefacto orientalista didáctico-pedagógico. Durante los años sesenta, este logró una llegada inusitada mediante estrategias de marketing, destacadas ilustraciones y una narrativa histórica novedosa hasta su sorpresiva cancelación. Se propone el término orientalismo infantil, ya no bajo su visión tradicional en tanto discurso abyecto y subalternizador, sino como un dispositivo pedagógico y masivo capaz de enseñar valores cívicos y morales que se creen necesarios para estas infancias dinámicas y activas. El Oriente culturiza, enseña, educa, ejemplifica y resignifica, cuando se convierte en transmisor de enseñanzas morales y conocimientos cívicos para niños y niñas, pero también funciona como artefacto lúdico, coleccionable y canjeable, es decir, consumible.The purpose of this article is to analyze the orientalist representations in the figurine album “History of Civilizations” of Anteojito magazine, published by Julio Korn S.A. as a didactic-pedagogical orientalist artifact. During the sixties, it achieved an unusual arrival through marketing strategies, outstanding illustrations and a novel historical narrative until its surprising cancellation. The term children\u27s orientalism is proposed, no longer under its traditional vision as an abject and subalternizing discourse, but as a pedagogical and massive device capable of teaching civic and moral values that were believed necessary for these dynamic and active childhoods. The Orient culturizes, teaches, educates, exemplifies and resignifies as a transmitter of moral teachings and civic knowledge for children, but it also functions as a playful, collectible and exchangeable artifact, that is to say, consumable

The adoption and spread of football in the city of Montevideo at the turn of the century (late 19th and early 20th centuries)
Full text linkA finales del siglo XIX, el football atravesó por un proceso de adopción y difusión; comenzando a llegar lentamente a la elite montevideana, que tenía relación comercial y social con los ingleses, todos jóvenes procedentes de las clases altas y medias de la sociedad criolla. Por otro lado, el fútbol se comenzó a popularizar en la capital uruguaya durante la primera década del siglo XX. Así, a partir del 1900 el fútbol adquirió una fuerza imparable y tuvo un notable impacto emocional y cada vez más personas disfrutaban de ese deporte. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar las representaciones del nuevo fenómeno social a través del semanario Rojo y Blanco (1900-1903), a partir de una selección de fuentes escritas y fotográficas tomando como base de análisis el año 1900.At the end of the 19th century, football went through a process of adoption and diffusion; slowly beginning to reach the Montevideo elite, who had a commercial and social relationship with the English, all young people from the upper and middle classes of Creole society. On the other hand, soccer began to become popular in the Uruguayan capital during the first decade of the 20th century. Thus, starting in 1900, football acquired unstoppable force and had a notable emotional impact and more and more people enjoyed that sport. The aim of the work is to analyze the representations of the new social phenomenon through the weekly Rojo y Blanco (1900-1903), based on a selection of written and photographic sources, taking the year 1900 as a basis for analysis

The emergence of the foreign press and the role of information in Guangzhou within the framework of Sino-Western relations (1827-1842).
No full textEste trabajo analiza la emergencia de la prensa occidental en el espacio público extranjero de enclave en Guangzhou teniendo en cuenta el rol de la información en el marco de la relación sino-occidental desde la primera publicación inglesa en 1826 hasta el Tratado de Nanjing de 1842. Para ello, indagamos sobre las formas en que circulaba la información antes de la aparición de la prensa entre los extranjeros y los comerciantes y autoridades chinas. Luego nos detenemos en el contexto de emergencia del Canton Register en un territorio de enclave para analizar su impacto sobre el ordenamiento del comercio cantonés. Además, presentamos el caso de otros periódicos que surgieron en este periodo –principalmente el Canton Press– y disputaron la opinión pública. Finalmente, examinamos los años críticos en que la relación sino-británica se tensó hasta romperse con el comienzo de la guerra del Opio para determinar el rol que jugó la prensa en ese momento. This paper analyzes the emergence of the Western press in the enclave foreign public space in Guangzhou, considering the role of information in the Sino-Western relationship from the first English publication in 1826 to the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842. To this end, we will inquire into the ways in which information circulated before the appearance of the press among foreigners and Chinese merchants and authorities. We will then examine the context of the emergence of the Canton Register in an enclave territory to analyze its impact on the organization of Cantonese commerce. In addition, we will present the case of other newspapers that emerged in this period –mainly the Canton Press– and contested the public arena. Finally, we will focus on the critical years in which the Sino-British relationship was strained until it broke with the outbreak of the Opium War to determine the role played by the press at that time.

Empire, Culture and Power: Two Examples of the "New" Seleucid History
Full text linkDurante las últimas décadas las investigaciones sobre el imperio seléucida han gozado de una vitalidad sin precedentes, consecuencia de la profunda renovación que el área de estudios ha atravesado. Esta “nueva historia seléucida” ha alcanzado su madurez con la publicación de dos importantes volúmenes colectivos, de los cuales el presente artículo ofrece una recensión. Proponemos que estas obras muestran con claridad tres ejes que, juzgamos, constituyen las principales características de la nueva historia seléucida: la diversificación metodológica y la relectura de las fuentes a partir de nuevas perspectivas, la reflexión sobre la naturaleza estructural del imperio seléucida, y la discusión sobre la posibilidad de definir una identidad propiamente seléucida. Scholarship on the Seleucid Empire has experienced an astonishing expansion as the result of the deep renovation that the field has undergone in the last decades. This “New Seleucid History” has reached maturity, as shown by the recent publication of two important volumes. This article serves as a recension of these books and suggests that they share three methodological and thematic axes that, we argue, define the spirit of the New Seleucid History: the adoption of a wide array of methods, which encourages new ways of reading old sources, the critical reflection about the nature of the empire’s structure, and the debate on the existence of a specifically Seleucid identity.
