Surface Aesthetics: The Secret Formula of Prompting
Full text linkText-to-image generative models offer an innovative method for creating visual content, exploiting the limitless potential of text-based inputs. However, the reliance on text prompts can lead to a labor-intensive process of experimentation for users aiming to achieve high-quality results. This has led to the development of a specialized prompt language with specific, descriptive keywords that users can exploit so as to achieve the best possible visual outcomes. Insight into prompting strategies can be obtained by analyzing the media generated and shared on text-to-image online platforms. Utilizing natural language processing (NLP) and visualization techniques, a detailed analysis of the prompts that led to the creation of images with exceptional popularity (by like count) was performed. The present study is focused on identifying the predominant topics and language patterns that contribute to the creation of images that receive high community ratings. Our analysis reveals a strong focus on surface aesthetics in prompts, which often emphasize conventional beauty and popular visual themes and a gravitation towards erotic and pornographic content. Positive prompts typically involve descriptions of female bodily features, blending elements of fantasy and realism. Negative prompts consistently counteract what seems to be perceived as visual imperfections, often describing body horror, marked by distorted human features as well as technical imperfections related to digital imagery in particular
Der Versicherungssenat des Reichsgerichtes, Heinrich Himmler und die Führerscheinklausel
Full text linkDer Beitrag behandelt ein zum Teil im nationalsozialistischen ductus gehaltenes Urteil des Reichsgerichts zur sog. „Führerscheinklausel“ in der Kraftfahrtversicherung aus dem Jahre 1941. Hintergrund dieses Urteil war eine verbrecherische „Anordnung“ von Heinrich Himmler, welche jüdischen Deutschen das Fahren von Kraftfahrzeugen verbot.
Der Verfasser kam auf dieses Urteil, als er im Archiv der BGH-Bibliothek die unveröffentlichten Urteile des Versicherungssenates des Reichsgerichtes zwischen 1939 bis 1945 durcharbeitete. Im Bundesarchiv konnte der Autor sodann die Gerichtsakte einsehen und ferner die Personalakten der entscheidenden Reichsgerichtsräte. Der Verfasser geht auch auf das Schicksal des später im Rahmen der Schoa ermordeten jüdischen Fahrers ein.
Dieses Urteil des Versicherungssenates belegt anschaulich, insbesondere unter Berücksichtigung der erfolgten Auswertung auch seiner übrigen Rechtsprechung, wie im Bereich des Zivilrechtes die Gerichte ihre Rechtsprechung auch nach der „Machtergreifung“ scheinbar normal weiterführten, teilweise auch Klage von Juden stattgaben und auch sind beim Versicherungssenat des Reichsgerichtet direkte politische Enflussnahmen nicht zu belegen. Aber wie die Auswertung des Verfassers rund um das „Führerscheinurteil“ belegt, war dies auch nicht notwendig, da denn Richter bewusst gewesen sein dürfte, wie sie einerseits formaljuristisch „richtig“ entscheiden, anderseits sich gegenüber den nationalsozialistischen Machthabers nicht angreifbar machen.This article deals with a judgement of the “Reichsgericht” (German, transl. Reich Court; The “Reichsgericht” was the supreme criminal and civil court in the German Reich from 1879 to 1945) on the so-called "Führerscheinklausel" (German, transl. driving license clause) in motor vehicle insurance from 1941. The ruling partly contains National Socialist style and characteristics. The background to this ruling was a criminal "order" by Heinrich Himmler, which prohibited Germans of Jewish origin from driving motor vehicles.
The author came across this judgement while working through the unpublished judgements of the Insurance Senate of the “Reichsgericht” between 1939 and 1945 in the archives of the “Bundesgerichtshof”-library (The “Bundesgerichtshof” being the highest court of civil and criminal jurisdiction in Germany; established in 1950 after the “Reichsgericht” was dissolved in 1945 by the Allies). The author was furthermore able to inspect the court file in the Federal Archives and also the personnel files of the deciding “Reichsgerichtsräte” (German, means the judges associated with the case at the “Reichsgericht”). The author also addresses the fate of the Jewish driver who was later murdered in the Shoah.
This judgement of the Insurance Senate vividly demonstrates, whilst taking the evaluation of its other jurisprudence particularly into account, how the courts continued their jurisdiction in the area of civil law, seemingly normally even after Hitler’s rise to power, in some cases also upholding complaints by Jews. Furthermore, it shows that a direct political influence could not be proven at the Insurance Senate of the “Reichsgericht”. But as the evaluation of the "driving license judgement" shows, there was hardly need to exert influence, as the judges must have been aware of how to decide "correctly" from a formal legal point of view on the one hand, but not to make themselves vulnerable to the National Socialist rulers on the other

Oft erst im Referendariat findet die systematische Verzahnung von Theorie und Praxis statt. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird beschrieben, wie in der Fachdidaktik Naturwissenschaft und Technik bereits in einem Bachelormodul eine Unterrichtssimulation als Prüfungsform eingesetzt wird. Dabei wird mit Portfolios und Peer-Feedback erprobt, wie sich die Selbstreflexion der Studierenden für ausgewählte fachwissenschaftliche und fachdidaktische Aspekte fördern lässt, um Grundlagen für eine lernendenzentrierte Haltung zu legen

Full text linkPsychedelic dreams, oddly-fingered hands, plausible yet disturbing alternative realities—generative AI systems have finally unleashed the weird. But in the process, haven’t they also normalized it? As a result, what we once considered weird is no longer so; instead, it has become a specific expression of classic kitsch. Let’s call it normie weird. If that’s the case, what happened to the real thing, what we could call weirdo weird, then? When one of the world’s leading tech companies releases a tool that produces crazy images reminiscent of a Max Ernst painting, something feels really strange. It’s not the images themselves, which we keep calling “surreal” to bring them back to something known and therefore reassuring. Instead, what’s truly weird might be cloaked in derivative, pictorial, ultimately visual aesthetics. It is behind a superficial layer of cute illustrations that lurks the non-human core of a sprawling statistical entity. This perspective confronts us with a haunting realization: that humanity itself is a kind of deep kitsch, and art, its greatest achievement, nothing but a shiny souvenir
Generative AI, Decision-Making, and Collaborative Choreography: How LSTM Networks Mirror Human Creativity
Full text linkThis study explores the potential of generative AI, specifically Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, to advance collaborative choreographic composition within the framework of the Body Logic (BL) Method—a choreographic approach grounded in cognitive science designed to challenge inherited habits and practices in contemporary dance. Through five cognitive tasks that emphasize different movement types and their qualities, we investigate how LSTM networks recognize established movement patterns and innovate by combining them in novel ways, mirroring the processes of human creativity. Furthermore, we examine how LSTM-generated sequences, derived from learned data, convey expressive qualities through a variety of movements. The AI-generated movements closely follow the original movement trajectory but exhibit minor deviations attributable to the LSTM model’s inherent prediction uncertainty. These variations illustrate the model’s capability to introduce fresh elements while maintaining learned patterns, akin to human creativity. This research contributes novel perspectives on how technology can enrich artistic expression and challenge habitual decision-making in dance

Opportunities for international cooperation in the field of Disaster Risk and Resilience Research. Report from a Field Trip to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, 2-11.6.2024
Full text linkThe report covers a scientific research trip of a German transdisciplinary delegation of disaster risk researchers to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 2024. The main purpose was to identify natural hazards and disaster risk management structures and to compare them with German experiences made during the floods in 2021, amongst other risks. The report includes workshops at scientific institutions and field visits. It documents the inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives and outlines future needs of international cooperation and research. Visual documentation of photos of natural hazard sites, exposed urban and rule settlement and infrastructure, and protective measures are included. Joint ideas for future research and improvement of disaster risk management structures are covered. The report contributes to a better international understanding of severe disaster risks such as earthquakes, landslides, mudflows, floods, glacial lake outburst flows, contamination, heat island effect, climate change, infrastructure disruptions, and many more. A joint conclusion is a lack of interconnected analysis and communication about risks. Pathways for integrated disaster risk management and resilience research are outlined to bridge gaps between the chain from hazard triggers to resilience of the affected, and to foster cross-actor and cross-sectoral cooperation

Darüber hinaus wollen wir in diesem Forschungsbericht auch darlegen, welche Forschungsziele wir am Institut verfolgen und welche Aktivitäten derzeit geplant sind
