Measuring Radial Velocities of Low Mass Eclipsing Binaries
No full textDue to the complex nature of the spectra of low-mass M type stars, it is difficult to determine their metallicities and temperatures directly. By studying eclipsing binary pairs comprising one F, G, or K type star with an M type star, we are able to use what we know about the primary star to learn more about the secondary star. Measuring the orbital reflex motion of the primary star, together with the eclipse light curve of the M star as it transits the primary star, allows us to determine the mass, radius, temperature, and metallicity of the M star.
We studied 23 low mass eclipsing binaries (EBLMs) previously discovered by SuperWASP photometry. We obtained spectra using the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) SMARTS 1.5-meter echelle spectrograph between June 2009 and January 2011. Each EBLM target was typically observed ~8 times over this time period. The spectra were processed using standard astronomical software, and a cross-correlation method was used to measure the radial velocity of the target star at each observed epoch.
Radial velocities were successfully determined for 21 of the 23 EBLM target objects. Orbital periods, radial velocity amplitudes, and eccentricities for these EBLMs could be determined from these radial velocities together with the preexisting light curves. Using these values and by assuming a mass for the primary star, we will be able to calculate the masses of the secondary M type star in each EBLM system
Reality and Existentialism in House of Leaves
No full textHouse of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski, is a novel first published in 2000 that has since developed notoriety in literary circles for its arguably unique experimentation with a multi-layered plot, varied visual typography, and multi-media format. Despite being widely read and influential over the past decade, little scholarly analysis has been done on House of Leaves. As House of Leaves could represent an entire new genre of literature, it is important that we understand its themes and the ways in which various writerly techniques function within the novel.
In this paper, I analyze House of Leaves through an existential lens, specifically utilizing the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus to examine the psyche of one of the novel’s main characters, Johnny Truant. In addition to primary sources by Danielewski, Sartre and Camus, I employ a 2002 analysis of House of Leaves by Katherine N. Hayles to aid my research. I conclude that Johnny’s story, and House of Leaves as a whole, breaks down traditional notions of reality, but retains existential hope for individuals who are able to find a purpose in life, even if that “purpose” is necessarily subjective.
My analysis presents an original take on House of Leaves, and contains wider implications for future novels that emulate its experimental style. Past analyses have focused on post-modern aspects of House of Leaves, but I analyze it through an existential lens. Beyond adding to the body of work on House of Leaves, my existential take on an otherwise post-modern text may prove influential to analyses of other “post-modern” novels in the future

No full textPar le billet de ce compte rendu de Bernard Joubert, Anthologie Érotique de la Censure (Paris : Éditions de La Musardine, 2001) nous aimerions inciter d’autres chercheurs à analyser d’autres aspects de la littérature dite obscène. C’est une littérature riche en plusieurs aspects et qui a été sous-estimée et ignorée. Sa dure traversée en vue de la liberté fut exactement semblable à celle de la condition féminine qui, malgré la bonne volonté de ses partisans ne s’est pas répandue partout dans le monde. Cependant, il faut espérer que grâce aux chercheurs de bonne volonté comme Bernard Joubert, cette littérature trouvera la place qui lui revient, étant donné que le sexe est quelque chose qui fait partie de l’être humain. Cependant, il faut tenir en compte que l’être humain est doué de la capacité de distinguer le bien du mal. Ainsi, si nous prétendons vivre dans un monde libre, il faut que cette liberté soit réelle et que chacun respecte les opinions d’autrui. La multiplicité du genre humain est ce qui constitue sa richesse, mais aussi un sage est celui qui sait accepter les opinions d’autrui. En ce qui concerne l’art, interdire une œuvre d’art sous prétexte d’outrage à la morale est un signe de platitude d’esprit. Toute forme de littérature a une relation étroite avec la société dans laquelle elle est conçue. Enfin, « There is no dirt for art’s sake.
