The Correlation between Speech Self-Efficacy and Communication Skills of Pre-Service Turkish Teachers
In the present study, the presence of a correlation between the communication skills and the speech self-efficacy of pre-service Turkish teachers was investigated. Associational survey model was adopted in the research. Research data were collected with two instruments which aimed to measure the communication skills and speech self-efficacy levels of junior students attending the Turkish Language Education departments of five universities in different regions in Turkey. The study findings demonstrated that there were moderate and large positive significant correlations between the speech self-efficacy perceptions (SSES) and communication skills (CSS) of pre-service Turkish teachers based on total scores and the subscale scores. Based on the findings it was recommended that pre-service teachers should be provided with more opportunities to develop their speech skills to ensure their command in active and healthy communications in the educational processes
A Critical View on Teacher Guidebooks as an Agent in Teacher Deskilling Process
The purpose of this study is to identify the views of teachers on teacher guidebooks and to analyse these views on the basis of the deskilling process. The data were collected from 67 teachers through an open-ended questionnaire, and analysed using content analysis method. Results showed that although most of the teachers considered the guidebooks necessary, they also made a number of criticisms. Among these, there were criticisms indicating that the guidebooks hindered teacher autonomy in various ways. Teachers%252339%253B views and criticisms in this direction confirm that guidebooks have an important role in the deskilling process of teachers
Teaching the Poor in Turkey%253A A Phenomenological Insight
The purpose of this study was to analyze how primary school classroom teachers experienced teaching poor students. This study was designed in a phenomenological approach. To fulfill the aim of the study, in-depth and focus group interviews were held as well as clasroom observations. The data gathered through interviews and observations was firstly transcribed and then content analyzig technique was embraced to be able to reach meaningful themes. As a result of analyzing process, two main themes were emerged. One of these themes was identified as lsquo%253Beducation and poverty, and the other theme was identified as lsquo%253Beffects of poverty
The Effects of Psychoeducation Program for Decreasing Social Appearance Anxiety on Social Appearance Anxiety Levels of High School Students
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of psychoeducation program, prepared for decreasing social appearance anxiety of high school students, on social appearance anxiety level of adolescents. In this study, an experimental model with pretest-posttest measurement and control group was used. The independent variable of the study was the psychoeducation program was applied only on experimental group between pretest and posttest. On the other hand, the dependent variable was the social appearance anxiety levels of the adolescents. The population of the study consisted of 300 high school students, whereas the sample of the study consisted of 40 students including 20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group, all of whom received the high scores from the social appearance scale. In the study The data concerning the dependent variable were obtained by using Social Appearance Anxiety Scale. A seven-session psychoeducation program for decreasing the social appearance anxiety of the students was prepared and carried out for the experimental application. The program to be applied on the experimental group was structured on the principles of Cognitive Behaviorist Approach and the basis of Social Skills Training. The hypotheses of the study were tested through the nonparametric statistical tests. While Mann Whitney U test was used for the unrelated measurements, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used for related samples. As a result of the results of the study, it was found that the applied Psychoeducation Program for Decreasing the Social Appearance Anxiety decreased the social appearance anxiety levels of the students included in the experimental group
The Investigation of Predictors of Cyberbullying and Cyber Victimization in Adolescents
In this study, subjective well-being and perceived social support from family, friends, and teachers, were examined to determine how effective on the levels of cyber victimization and bullying in adolescents. The research was conducted on the basis of the relational screening model. The sample group of this study is created by high school students that continue education at the high school level in Erzincan and Ağrı provinces in 2017-2018 academic year, they have chosen by unselected sampling method, as determined by 416 (53.7%25) are male and 358 (46.3%25), including girls, are a total of 774 adolescents. The Cyber Victim and Bullying Scale (Çetin, Yaman amp%253B Peker, 2011), Adolescent Subjective Well-Being Scale (Eryılmaz, 2009), Perceived Social Support Scale (ASLÖ-R) (Yıldırım, 1997, 2004), and Personel Information Form was used as the data collection tools in the study. The data obtained in the study were analyzed by stepwise regression analysis method from multiple linear regression analysis. A Comparison of Human Rights Education in Social Studies Textbooks in Turkey and the United States
The aim of this study was to compare the level of allocation of human rights education issues in social studies textbooks in Turkey and the United States. For this aim, six social studies textbooks from both countries were examined. Textbooks were analyzed in terms of their level of human rights education issues, in accordance with Karaman - Kepenekcis (1999) subcategories. A content analysis method was used to analyze the textbooks. As a result, it was observed that human rights education issues were included more in Turkish social studies textbooks. The study showed that Turkish and United States textbooks contained the rights subcategory the most. While the intensity scores of the democracy, freedom, and judgment subcategories were listed the highest in both countries textbooks, on the other hand, the intensity scores of the tolerance and peace subcategories were placed last in the textbooks of both countries
Effects of Formative Assessment on Prospective Teachers’ Achievement, Attitude and Self-Regulation Skills
The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of formative assessment on prospective teachers academic achievement, attitudes towards educational measurement and self-regulation skills. In the study, quasi-experimental design including non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group. There are 40 prospective teachers in each one of the experimental and control group which implemented in the scope of measurement and evaluation course in education faculty. Formative assessment was implemented within the 14-weeks in the experimental group, and summative assessment practices were done in the control group. According to the research results, it is determined that academic achievements of prospective teachers in the experimental group have differentiated significantly to academic achievements of prospective achievement in the control group. There is no statistically significant difference between prospective students attitudes towards measurement and self-regulation in the experimental and control group. However, it has been made out those prospective teachers attitudes towards measurement and self-regulation skills in the experimental group have been higher than the others in the control group
Early Childhood Turkish Children%20s Attitudes toward Science
The purpose of the study was to examine and describe the attitudes of Turkish early childhood children in science. This study explored the causal factors that influence children%252339%253Bs attitudes toward science such as teachers years of teaching experiences, frequency of teaching science in a week, and teachers teaching style. Turkish children (N%253D44) who live in the United States and engage in early childhood classroom involved into the study. Preschool teachers who had Turkish children in their classroom completed survey for giving information about their Turkish children experiences in their science teaching activities. The Childs Attitude Toward Science (CATS) survey which developed by researchers was used while collecting data. The results showed that Turkish children have positive attitudes towards science especially in Life Science Topics. The results also showed that there were statistically significant relationships between Turkish childrens attitudes towards science and their teachers years of teaching experiences and frequency of teaching science in a week. The results also showed that Turkish childrens success in other activities (language, art, math) related with their attitudes towards science. The findings also showed that using text books and hands on activities during science education also had relationship with childrens attitudes towards science
A Study on Social Studies Teacher Candidates’ Perception of Science, Scientific Research and Scientists
In this study, it is aimed to determine the perceptions of social studies teacher candidates regarding the topics of science, scientific research and scientists. In the study adopting the qualitative research approach, data was gathered through both the metaphor form and interviews. The study was conducted in a university located in Ankara. Ninety-two teacher candidates participated in the metaphor stage of the study%253B and 45 teacher candidates participated in the interview stage. It has been concluded that metaphors developed by teacher candidates do not contain any negative perception regarding the science. When the metaphor images of teacher candidates were examined, it was determined that in general, the concept of science is perceived as guiding and indispensable for life. According to the participants, scientists are perceived as enlightening, knowledgeable, curious and hardworking. With regard to the concept of scientific research, the participants have brought to the forefront that scientific studies are difficult, they require much effort, and they are systematic. In the analysis of the interview data, it was determined that the social studies teacher candidates do not have enough information about science, scientists and scientific research. In the analysis of the interview data, it was seen that teacher candidates have some incorrect information about the science, scientific research and scientists. Some recommendations were offered in the light of the findings of the study
Reflective Teaching Practices in Teachers and Their Attitudes Toward Professional Self-development
This study aimed to investigate the levels of teachersprime%253B reflective practices as well as their attitudes toward professional self-development in relation to various variables, including gender, number of workshops attended and experience. The study sample consisted of 162 teachers who work as teachersat a number of private schools in Amman. Twoscales have been used in this study%253B the first questionnaire consists of (28) items tomeasure teachersprime%253B reflective practices in 6 dimensions. The second scale consists of (18)items to measure the attitudes-towards-professional-development. Results found that the level of teachersprime%253B reflective practices on the scale as a whole were within an prime%253Bacceptableprime%253B level%253B however, their practices in the subcategory ofquot%253Bappreciating criticismquot%253B were below acceptable. Findings indicated that teachersprime%253B attitudes toward professional development were positive. Findings further revealed a strong correlation of 0.485 between the reflective practices and the attitudes toward self-development in teachers
