‘We are a Chinese school’%253A Constructing school identity from the lived experiences of expatriate and Chinese teaching faculty in a Type C international school in Shanghai, China.
This study explores school identity by analysing the perceptions of Chinese and expatriate teachers in a Type C, non-traditional international school in Shanghai, China. The purpose of this study was to build on Haydens (2016) work by offering a detailed description of this type of school which continues to be under researched. A mixed-methods approach was adopted that explored the schools identity on three levels%253A the rhetorical, the curricula, and the lived. The data revealed considerable discontinuity between these levels, particularly from the perspective of the international teachers. The findings are discussed in relation to cultural scripts for teaching and learning and institutional logics and implications are drawn for creating a more interculturally inclusive school ethos
A Twice-Exceptional Child - A Case Study
This is a qualitative case study of a gifted twice-exceptional student with impulse control disorder (ICD) co-diagnosed with depression. This study follows the lsquo%253Bcase study pattern (precedence). The data set of this study is composed of documents from a study involving a twice-exceptional student with adverse event sampling who has been selected through purposive sampling (activity papers, drawings), minutes of interviews with the students mother and teachers and observation notes kept throughout the process. Data have been analyzed using the content analysis methodology. At the end of this study seeking to find out what this gifted student with impulse control disorder [ICD] co-diagnosed with depression goes through in the event of being also twice-exceptional and whether or not his%252Fher condition of being gifted is overshadowed by him%252Fher having psychological%253B the fact that disadvantaging traits of such twice-exceptional child has been found to dwindle almost down to none can be interpreted as the positive outcome of the effective approach towards the analyzed unit of the two emerging main categories, i.e. school and family. The consistent and supportive attitudes of the family have ensured to eradicate the tantrums (temper fits) of the twice-exceptional child, toppled with treatment of the child and a fine administration of the drug doses. At school, on the other hand, the available supervision policy, intervention methodologies in support of treatment and the professional approach of the teachers have contributed to the formation of a socially-enabling environment for the twice-exceptional child, including, also, backing by his%252Fher peers. Taking into consideration that mere drug treatment would not be sufficient, support of the family as well as of the school reveals that the symptoms linked with the depression-co-diagnosed-ICD of the twice exceptional child were prevented from suppressing the childs giftedness
Hannah Arendt’s “The Human Condition” in the realm of early childhood education%253A perceptions and reality
This article is an academic commentary on the concept of sociology of education. The authors have ventured through the lens of Hannah Arendts The Human Condition and discuss its impact might have had if the corresponding mode of education and pedagogy be carried out in reality according to what Arendt had inspired her readers. A cross reference has been made on the recent 2017 early childhood reform document in Hong Kong on Play with the anticipated forms of education which the authors have perceived in Arendts The Human Condition, namely the lsquo%253Blabour, lsquo%253Bwork and lsquo%253Baction. Discussions on the impacts of Arendts perceptions of lsquo%253Bworks of art and lsquo%253Bvita activa in particular have been made if they are to be implemented in the early childhood classroom in Hong Kong
High School Students%20 Images of Physicists
The aim of this study is to reveal the high school students images of physicists. Participants of this study consisted of 85 students in a high school in a province center on the East Black Sea Region of Turkey. The data were obtained by adapting the Draw A Scientist Test developed by Chambers (1983) and updated by Song amp%253B Kim (1999) to Draw A Physicist Test. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis. In this study, it was determined that most of the high school students described a scientist as male, 40-49 years old, wearing sports%252Fdaily clothes, wearing glasses, looking happy, working individually, and teaching in class. It was seen that students often drew or described scientists by thinking of their own physics teachers. For this reason, it is suggested that more activities with the topic of physicist should be included in the curricula, textbooks, and course contents in order to create a more accurate perception of physicist in high school students
Grammar Attitude Scale%253A A Study of Validity and Reliability
It is believed that there is a positive relationship between the attitudes of the teachers towards the lesson they teach and the attitudes of the students towards this lesson. Within this context, it is considered important to determine the attitudes of teachers who develop an attitude in a way to be able to make the subject achieve the goal effectively. Together with this, it is more significant to determine the attitudes of teachers during their undergraduate education since attitude is a phenomenon that cannot be altered easily. In this study, a scale was developed to measure the attitudes of teacher candidates towards grammar. The validity and reliability analyses of the research designed according to screening model were conducted on 252 undergraduate students. According to the results of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) of the data collected from the 25-item trial form prepared, it was found that the scale had a 15-item, 4-factor structure and explained 67.84%25 of the total variance. As a result of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) performed, the fit index values were examined, and it was seen that the 4-factor structure of the 15-item scale was confirmed as a model. The results of EFA and CFA exhibited that the scale had a valid structure. Cronbach-Alpha internal consistency and test-retest reliability coefficients were calculated to determine the reliability of the scale and according to the values obtained, it was concluded that the scale was reliable
School Principals%20 and Teachers%20 Views on Teacher Performance Evaluation
This study aims to detect school principals and teachers views on teacher performance evaluation, which is made for teachers- who are one of the most important resources of education- to develop themselves. Semi-structured interview method, one of qualitative research methods, was used in this study. The study group was composed of 18 school principals and 60 teachers working in the Çan district of Çanakkale province. Interview Form 1 to obtain school principals views on teacher performance evaluation and Interview Form 2 to obtain teachers views- both of which were developed by the researchers- were used for data collection. The collected data were put to inductive content analysis. The majority of the school principals were informed of the goals of teacher performance evaluation. School principals considered teacher performance evaluation as positive in that it was objective, that it helped teachers in self-development, that it contributed to students development, that it made students active in the classroom and that it used the method of reward and punishment. According to principals and teachers, leaving teacher performance evaluation to the managers of the institutions was positive in terms of reliability and objectivity. Yet, both school principals and teachers were of the opinion that conflicts could occur in schools unless the criteria for evaluation were not clear and distinct and unless evaluation is fair
Roma Children%253A Victims of Social Injustices in Education
In this qualitative study aiming to identify the opinions of postgraduate students studying in İzmir, Turkey about the schooling practices of Roma children from social justice perspective, case study design was used. The study group included 46 post graduate students. As result of the study, it was identified that most of the participants agreed that the Roma children have limited access to schooling for such reasons as economics, Roma culture and the family structure, exclusion practices towards them, lack of social state and learned desperateness and made some suggestions accordingly. It can be argued that the disadvantaged status of Roma children and the inequities they exposed to manifest themselves as economic, cultural and thus participative injustices in education. Accordingly, improving the socio-economic conditions of Roma families thus children, valuing the culture of Roma and including Roma families and children in the education system were recommended
Comparison of Writing Skills of Students of Different Socioeconomic Status
This study compares the writing skills of students with different socioeconomic statuses, using the quantitative research method designs of survey study and causal-comparative study. The study group included 67 Turkish teachers and a total of 120 eighth-grade students from four different middle schools in the province of Gaziantep, Turkey, and the study was conducted during the 2016ndash%253B2017 academic year. The socioeconomic status determination survey was applied to the students in order to ascertain their socioeconomic status. The students written texts and the teachers responses to the questionnaire were used as the study data. The written expression texts were evaluated by two experts according to the written expression evaluation form. NCSS (Number Cruncher Statistical System) 2007 (Kaysville, Utah, USA) software was used to analyze the data. In the analysis of the data, in addition to descriptive statistical methods (mean, standard deviation, median, frequency, ratio, minimum, and maximum values), Mann-Whitney U test was used for the paired comparison of data which did not display a normal distribution. The results revealed there to be a significant difference between the students with high and low socioeconomic status, in favor of the group with high socioeconomic status in terms of the form, content formation, content organization, word choice, and grammar dimensions of the written expressions. The results failed to show a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the students skills in conducting research on the writing subject and building a draft of the text to be written but did show a significant difference in evaluating their writing, in favor of the students with high socioeconomic status

This study aims to examine Ibn Rushd perceptions in terms of Knowledge and reflection thereof on his educational philosophy. This study reached at a conclusion that Ibn Rushd partaking had its important role in framing the Knowledge theory and maintain it away from deviations and in the same time originated much jurisprudences starting from Aristotle theory who considered that self perish with the body%252339%253Bs yard, while Ibn Rushd considered it as non physical self and image of body in the same time. On the other hand, Ibn Rushd disagreed with Knowledge theory adopted in Mysticism%253B who believes that human cannot reach Knowledge depending on mental means alone, but in turn Knowledge is gift from Allah achieved through strife, psychological readiness and purifying the heart.
Ibn Rushd Knowledge theory is based on knowledge tools (feeling, mind and heart) integration. Serial order thereof based on promotion from feeling to the mind. Any personal cognizance is moral cognizance in Physical such as feeling or fantasy, while total cognizance is meaning cognizance physical.
Based on Ibn Rushd Theory on Knowledge this study examined his educational philosophy which proved that it is in line with education%252339%253Bs modern vision and acquiring knowledge%253B i.e. Thomas Aquinas, Jean Beige, Bruner and other pioneers of Epistemology theory in Education
Adventures in Advising%253A Strategies, Solutions, and Situations to Student Problems in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Field
Teaching and research are often the most focused upon aspects of working within academia in criminology and criminal justice (Sitren amp%253B Applegate, 2012%253B Jonson amp%253B Moon, 2014%253B Pratt, 2014), but an overlooked and underappreciated part of an undergraduates overall higher education success is academic advising (Light, 2001). There has been scant research on advising within criminology and criminal justice, and this paper seeks to fill this gap by detailing reflections on the advising process within a successful and growing criminology and criminal justice program. Strategies for advising overall will be presented as will particular situations and student needs. Lastly, a case study of how advising works for a criminology and criminal justice department from a large, public institution located in the Southeastern United States will be discussed and demonstrate how the strategies, situations, and student needs apply
