A Research on Visual Learning Representations of Primary and Secondary Science Textbooks in Turkey
The aim of this study is to analyze the types of visual representations in primary and secondary science textbooks in Turkey. The sample of the research constitutes six textbooks prepared by private publishers for primary and secondary science courses (3rd-8th Grade) in Turkey in 2018-2019 academic year. Document analysis design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, is used in this study. The data are analyzed with descriptive analysis method by using the Moline (1995) Visual Representation Classification Model. The results of the study show that simple diagrams are used more frequently than other types of visual representations in all class levels and units in science textbooks. It is understood that synthetic diagrams are more preferable in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades science textbooks than in other grade levels, whereas analytical diagrams are more preferable in the sixth grades science textbooks than the other grade levels. Visuals such as graphics and maps are determined to be little used in all class levels and units, on the other hand table visuals are frequently used in all class levels. In addition, it is determined that the timeline as the visual representation is used in a few units only in the 7th grades book. The results of this study show that visual learning representations in primary and secondary school textbooks need to be rearranged in terms of diversity and distribution in class level and units
Factors Affecting Teacher Candidates Value Preferences
Since the beginning, humankind accumulated knowledge and experiences by passing them to new generations. This accumulation within societies emerged as these societies values. We acquire these values from our societies and we hold them up as examples in our lives. To ensure the countrys future, educational institutions and teachers have to teach these values.
The study purpose is to determine whether teacher candidates value preferences differ or not. Relational survey model was employed in the study. The sex of the candidates, education level of the parents, income level of the family, where they live and the program they are in make up the independent variables. Human value dimensions (power, achievement, hedonism, self-direction, stimulation, universalism, benevolence, tradition, conformity and security) of the candidates make up the dependent variables of the study. The study universe consists of seniors attending Omer Halisdemir Universitys Faculty of Education during the 2016-2017 academic year. Selected by random sampling method among this universe, 380 senior teacher candidates make up the study group.
The study results put forth that values education has effect on female candidates universalism, benevolence and security value tendencies, and their value tendencies are high. Also, the higher the mothers education level, the higher the candidates universalism, hedonism, benevolence and security value tendencies. Yet, fathers education level does not have any effect on candidates value tendencies. The study, also, reveals that teacher candidates family income and where they live have no effect on value tendencies. Furthermore, the programs the candidates are in have effect on their universalism, hedonism, benevolence and security value tendencies
Physically Active Leisure Participants Segmentation%253A PCM Stage-Based Investigation
Recent recreation and sports marketing research demonstrates that involvement can be used as a new segmentation strategy and offers potential opportunities for better understanding of leisure participants. In the current study, the three-step the Psychological Continuum Model (PCM) segmentation procedure was performed for participant segmentation by using physically active leisure involvement profiles. This study consisted of 561 (nmale%253D321 and nfemale%253D240) physically active leisure participants and three involvement facets of hedonic value, centrality and symbolic value were conducted to segment participants. Confirmatory factor analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficient and multivariate analysis of variance were used for data analysis. Our findings showed that a significant majority of the participants were allocated to the attraction stage (n %253D 306, 54.5%25) and awareness (n %253D 106, 18.9%25), attachment (n %253D 104, 18.5%25) and allegiance (n %253D 45, 8%25), respectively. Consequently, the segmentation revealed that differences in attitudes from awareness to attraction, attachment and allegiance stages, become strengthened among physically active leisure participants. Thus, this information can be used to better understand the leisure activity participation habits of students for marketers-practitioners
Explanatory Strategies of Preservice Mathematics Teachers about Divisibility by Zero
In this study, it was aimed to reveal the explanatory strategies that preservice teachers use in the process of explaining the concept of divisibility by zero. It was investigated how the concept of divisibility by zero, which can be used in expressing the case where the denominator is present in the definition of important concepts of the secondary school curriculum such as the fraction and rational number, is defined and explained. A scale consisting of three open-ended questions, in which it was questioned what the definition of the concept of divisibility by zero is and how this concept can be explained to the secondary school%252Fhigh school student, was used as a data collection instrument. The data were collected through this scale and the content analysis method was adopted in the data analysis. As a result of the analyses made, it was determined that the preservice teachers use the rule strategy the most on the subject of divisibility by zero
The Predictive Relationships between the Social Media Addiction and Social Anxiety, Loneliness, and Happiness
The purpose of this study is to examine how well university students social anxiety, happiness and loneliness levels explain their levels of social media addiction. The research was designed as a correlational survey model. The research group consisted a total of 312 university students, 165 female (53%25) and 147 male (47%25), attending at a state university in Turkey during the 2017-2018 academic year. The data collected using a Personal Information Form, a Social Media Addiction Scale, a Social Anxiety Scale, the short form of the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, and the short form of the UCLA Loneliness Questionnaire. Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted in SPSS to investigate the relationship between students social media addiction and their social anxiety, happiness, and loneliness levels. The findings showed that there was a positive relationship between students social media addiction levels and their social anxiety and loneliness levels. On the other hand, there was a negative relationship between students social media addiction levels and their happiness levels. According to these findings, social media addiction variable significantly predicted by the social anxiety and happiness variables, but it did not significantly predicted by the loneliness variable. The findings were discussed in the light of the relevant literature and recommendations were presented
