From Gallipoli to Independence%253A Turkish and Australian Students Perspectives
No full textGiven the broad public appeal of WWI commemorations and in consideration of their inclusion in school curriculum, the question is raised of how do Turkish and Australian students view the importance and ways of commemorating the Gallipoli campaign%253F This comparative study, the first of its kind approaches this current gap in understanding how high school students view this historical event. The focus of this paper is to report on research conducted in Australian and Turkish* high schools during the centenary years of WWI commemorations. 185 high school students agreed to participate and share their perspectives on commemorating Gallipoli and to respond to a series of five sources provided to them as part of the research activity. How students responded to the sources and engaged with questions of commemoration is detailed throughout this paper
21st Century Skills%253A The Predictive Role of Attitudes Regarding STEM Education and Problem-Based Learning
Get PDFThe objective of this research is to determine the predictive situation of the proficiency perceptions of preschool teacher candidates%252339%253B attitudes regarding STEM Education and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) towards 21st century skills. Within the scope of this objective, correlational survey design, one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The sample of the research consisted of a total of 284 teacher candidates studying in the Department of Preschool Education. In order to measure the 21st century skills of the teacher candidates according to their own perspective, the lsquo%253B21st Century Skills and Competences Scale was used. To measure the attitudes of the teacher candidates towards STEM education, the %252339%253BSTEM Education Attitude Scale%252339%253Bwas used. In addition, the %252339%253BProblem-Based Learning Attitude Scale%252339%253B was employed to identify the candidates%252339%253B attitudes towards problem-based learning. Standard multiple linear regression analysis was performed while analyzing the data. As a result of the research, it was observed that the attitudes of the preschool teacher candidates regarding STEM education and PBL had a moderate and meaningful relationship with their proficiency perceptions towards 21st century skills. Additionally, it was found out that the candidates%252339%253B attitudes towards STEM education and PBL explained 20%25 of their proficiency perceptions towards 21st century skills. In the light of the results obtained from the research, in order for preschool teacher candidates and teachers to design appropriate and qualified learning environments, it is suggested that they can be compared with enriched teaching practices that will be supported with different and innovative approaches, such as STEM and PBL, and structured in the focus of developing 21st century skills
Teachers Self-perceived Skills as the function of Gender and Teaching Experiences in the Classroom Assessment%253A A study in High Schools of South West Shewa Zone, Ethiopia.
Get PDFThis study was conducted to assess teachers perceptions of classroom assessment as the function of gender and teaching experiences. To this end, the researchers employed a cross-sectional survey design collecting a survey data from 197 teachers selected from seven high schools using Zhang and Burry-Stocks (2003) modified assessment practice inventory questionnaire and an observation checklist developed by the researchers. The findings of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant gender difference only in communicating assessment results%253B t (173) %253D -6.557, p lt%253B .05. Also, there were statistically significant differences across service years in terms of constructing test items, F (2, 172) %253D 2907.04, p lt%253B .05%253B analyzing test results and test revisions, F (2, 172) %253D 121.401, p lt%253B .05%253B and communicating assessment results, F (2, 172) %253D 98.840, p lt%253B .05. Both in the self-perceived assessment and classroom observation results, female teachers were found better than male teachers in communicating assessment results. Finally, conclusions and recommendations were forwarded based on the results of this study
Investigation of the Relationship between Teacher Candidates Attitude and Readiness Levels towards Teaching Profession
Get PDFThe aim of this study is to determine teacher candidates attitude and readiness levels towards teaching profession and the relationship of teacher candidates attitude and readiness level towards teaching profession in terms of gender, grade, having teacher relative, willingly study this department and belief of being a good teacher independent variables. The study group consists of 387 teacher candidates studying at faculty of education from different departments and grades in 2018-2019 academic year. Teacher candidates attitude scale and readiness towards teaching profession scales were used as data collection tool. For data analyzing independent variables t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test and Spearmansrho correlation analysis were used. According to the research results, mean score of teacher candidates attitude towards teaching profession is 3.84 and mean score of teacher candidates readiness towards teaching profession is 3.91. In addition, according to the Spearmansrho correlation analysis, there is a moderate and positive relationship between teacher candidates attitude and readiness levels towards teaching profession

No full textThis study aims to investigate the effects of Science Technology Education Math (STEM) practices on academic achievement and motivations of students in the 5th grade of middle school in quot%253BExploring and Knowing the World of Living Creaturesquot%253B section in Science lecture. The study was designed in a semi-experimental pattern with pre-test post-test control group. A middle school in the center of Antakya was selected by appropriate sampling method. The sample of the study was formed by the 5th grade students who were studied in 2 sections where the same teacher taught. A group of students in one section formed the control group of students while the other branch formed experimental group. The unit lsquo%253BExploring and Knowing the World of Living Creatures was explained through the lesson plans prepared according to the STEM applications in the experimental group and through the methods appropriate to the course book in the control group. As a data collecting tool, both groups were given the quot%253BExploring and Knowing the World of Living Creatures Achievement Test (EKWLCAT) and quot%253BMotivation Scale toward Science Learningquot%253B (MSSL) were applied. The obtained data were analyzed by statistical analysis utilizing the mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage values of these data using an appropriate statistical program. As a result, it has been determined that STEM applications have a positive effect on academic achievement. However, when the subcategories of the motivation scale were examined, a statistically significant difference was not found in the subcategories of performance communication and participation, while a positive increase was found in favor of research and cooperation
An Examination of Primary School Students%252339%253B Academic Achievements and Motivation In Terms of Parents%252339%253B Attitudes, Teacher Motivation, Teacher Self-efficacy and Leadership Approach
No full textThis study aims to analyze primary school students%252339%253B academic achievement and motivation in terms of parental attitudes, teacher motivation, teacher self-efficacy and leadership perception. Research model of the study is designed as descriptive research model and the data are collected from 60 primary school teachers teaching 4th grade students in 2017-2018 academic year and from 1476 4th grade primary school students. The findings of the study show that fathers%252339%253B having a high level of education, teachers%252339%253B having a high level of motivation, a democratic attitude in family are some factors positively affecting student achievement. The findings also indicate that democratic parental attitude and a high level of teacher motivation increase student motivation. It is also concluded that neglectful parental attitude negatively affects student achievement and motivation. Accepted or distributed leadership approach in the school influences teacher motivation. The findings show that teachers with high self-efficacy also have high level of motivation. It is also concluded that teachers at the first years of their career have lower level of motivation. The study is believed to be a guiding example for other studies analyzing similar topics
A Case Study%253A Activity-Based Learning Process Prepared By NTCs (Nikola Tesla Center) System of Learning Approach
Get PDFThe NTC (Nikola Tesla Center) system of learning is an activity program designed to promote the development of motor skills and cognitive abilities in preschool and school-age children. This research aims to investigate the activity-based learning process prepared by NTC system of learning approach. In this qualitative research, case study design was used. The research group consisted of 34 fourth-grade students and four female teachers from a public primary school in the 2018-2019 academic year. Data were collected by using semi-structured interview and observation techniques. The research data was collected after 12 lessons on 8 Flags Themed activities based on the NTC system of learning approach within the Social Studies class prepared by the researchers. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyze semi-structured interviews with teachers, and the content analysis method to analyze semi-structured interviews with students. According to research results, students described the flag-country matching, classifying flags according to their characteristics, learning colors, shapes, and emblems on the flag, and learning the capitals and national anthems of the countries as activities they liked. Research suggestions include implementing them at different levels of education, and structuring them mainly for musical and motor skills development
Algorithmic Thinking in Primary Education
Get PDFUse of algorithmic thinking in education has received significant attention as it is grounded on thinking and performing the necessary action in line with a clearly defined purpose. The current study aimed to probe prospective classroom teachers views on algorithmic thinking skills and use of these skills in education. The research data were collected from 36 undergraduate students attending a state university in Turkey through an interview form developed by the researcher. Their responses to the interview questions were examined through content analysis and converted into themes and codes. The participants reported that teachers with well-developed algorithmic thinking skills tend to teach gradually, to follow a process that facilitates learning, to encourage students to be well-planned and neat and to help them develop%252F improve their algorithmic thinking skills. They also suggested the use of such techniques as discovery learning, problem-solving, induction, brain-storming, concept mapping, games, discussion, fishbone and case study that require students active involvement in the learning process in order to improve their algorithmic thinking skills. The study discusses further findings in detail and concludes with practical implications developed in the light the findings reported here and the existing literature
Impact of a SSI Program on Prospective Teachers Character and Values for Global Citizens
Get PDFRaising global citizens has been included in education systems, especially in the 21st century objectives. In their education systems, countries have turned towards more global level objectives rather than local level objectives that only meet their own needs. The importance of the character and values expected from the global citizens to be raised has also increased. For this reason, in this study, it is aimed to investigate the change in the character and values of prospective biology teachers as global citizens who are trained with a Socioscientific Issues (SSI) program. The study used a one group pretest-posttest design. The study group of the research consists of 19 prospective biology teachers studying in the first year of a state university in Ankara. A SSI program was used to ensure the development of some desired character and values in the prospective teachers. Character and Values as Global Citizens Assessment (CVGCA) questionnaire was applied before and after SSI program. It has been determined that there is a significant difference between the scores of prospective biology teachers obtained from the CVGVA scale and its sub-dimensions before and after the SSI program. The findings of the study showed that SSI program improved prospective biological teachers%252339%253B ecological worldview, socioscientific accountability, and social and moral compassion character and values. In addition, it was understood that the characteristics of prospective teachers such as empathy, taking action, producing solutions, and noticing different perspectives became evident
Visually Impaired Mentally Sighted%253A An Inclusive Education Case
No full textThis research was carried out as part of an Erasmus %2B project called Visually Impaired Mentally Sighted targeting to improve the conditions and materials used in the educational environment and to develop personal and professional skills of the school staff. This qualitative study employed descriptive case study design. The study involved 16 participants in total including visually impaired students, teachers and the principal from the high school which is the coordinator institution of the project. The researchers conducted two semi-structured focus group interviews with the participant teachers, one focus group interview with participant students and a face-to-face interview with the school principal. The data were analysed according to content analysis. The researchers created four themes as follows%253B lsquo%253Bconsciousness, lsquo%253Bprofessional development, lsquo%253Bteaching materials and lsquo%253Bmotivation. That means students in this case study increased their motivation at school. Also, teachers realized that there is a key area for their professional development. At the same time, the importance of using inclusive educational materials that enable disabled students to access education became apparent
