The Impact of Awakening Perception of Learners Comprehension on English Learning via Regularly Listening to Songs in English
Get PDFWhy cant I recognize and understand the words clearly rehearsed by the teacher while lecturing or musicians while singing or the native speakers of English while dialoguing%253F This situation has been a great challenge and an issue not only for the learners of English Language at English preparatory school at Inonu University but also for others as well. To answer this question, researcher supposes that it is essential that teachers should improve awareness of learners in the perception of comprehension in audio-visual, listening and speaking skill through constant listening to music in English for a certain period of time. To achieve this expectation, the implementation of new teaching style was applied to the class of 29 students via using listening activity with 40 different chosen songs from varies classical and contemporary musicians in English in constant and regular repetition just after each course ends. This process lasted about 10 weeks time. Constituted with 10- different questions for a pre-test and post-test form of instrumental measurement based on listening activity as an uncommon style of teaching was administered to 29 students of varies disciplines%253B engineering, international relations and philosophy in preparatory school. Thus, the aim of this qualitative and quantitative research is to evaluate to what extent the impact of this teaching style is on the learners listening and speaking skills. The data obtained were analyzed through chi-square analysis test. Its research design setting is one-way pretest and posttest experimental single group study. The data obtained were analyzed through SPSS package programmer. The results gained indicated that there were significant differences between pretest and the posttest figures after application of meta cognitive awareness raising strategy (mean from 3,0625 to 7000) based on time variable. There is no important difference in mean between the genders%253B males from 16 to 40, total 56. Females from 13 to 29, total 42. Finally, this implementation related perception awakening in English teaching classroom experiment has resulted in outcomes fruitfully and can be recommended to be applied to the classes in other institutions for the learners of English Language to increase their awareness of perception during the educational processes
Views of Turkish Teachers on Skills-Based Turkish Questions
Get PDFPurpose%253A Certain changes occurred in measurement and evaluation systems, centralized exams and exams implemented in schools in alignment with developments in the world. Our mean scores in exams including PISA and TIMMS were lower than other countries. This led the Ministry of Education to introduce skills-based questions in exams with the purpose of familiarizing students with such questions and get successful results in these exams. The purpose of this study is to identify teachers views on skills-based questions introduced to exams in our country and provide solution options in alignment with these views. Method%253A 26 Turkish teachers voluntarily participated in the study. Interviews were held using semi-structured questions prepared in alignment with expert opinions on skills-based questions. A descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data. Findings%253A The results showed that the majority of participants try to focus on skills-based questions when they conduct their classes. Participants try to ask skills-based questions in exams, but they dont prepare the questions. Instead, they use other resources for questions. Majority of participants stated that skills-based Turkish questions create exam stress in students and increase their exam anxiety. Implications for research and practice%253A This study revealed that it would be beneficial for students to encounter skills-based Turkish questions frequently. Within this scope, Turkish textbooks should be re-designed
An Overview of Writing Rubrics in Doctoral Dissertations in Turkey
Get PDFWriting rubrics have been used in doctoral dissertations in Turkey to assess student writing for nearly twenty years. This study aims to determine which features are assessed in the rubrics used in doctoral dissertations. Twenty-five rubrics were selected to determine the analysis of validity and reliability, rubric dimensions, features of criterion descriptions, and performance levels. The results showed that researchers did not attach much importance to the validity of rubrics, and some studies provided insufficient information about reliability. Rubrics typically have three and five performance levels. As a result of the content analysis based on the descriptions, nine categories (genre-oriented content, organization, style, presentation, mechanics, vocabulary, sentences, textuality, process) and 104 features were identified. The frequency of these features was 567. According to the emerging categorization in the present study, we observed that the rubrics used in doctoral dissertations were similar to the criteria in the 6 %2B1 Trait Writing Model. However, the descriptions were found to be more straightforward and concise. The features in the rubrics were similar to one another yet differed depending on the purpose, type, and length of descriptions. Some of the rubrics had descriptions that were ill-suited to the nature of the rubric. The results were discussed, presenting recommendations
The Relationship Between Perceived Parental Rejection and Dating Anxiety%253A The Mediating Role of Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions
Get PDFThe aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of interpersonal cognitive distortions between perceived parental rejection and dating anxiety in emerging adults. The study also examined whether gender and grade level also differ in terms of dating anxiety. Participants were 574 (334 women, 240 men) university students studying in a state university in Turkey who were reached with stratified sampling method. The data were collected with Adult Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire- Short Form, Dating Anxiety Scale and Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale. The results of the study showed positive correlations between perceived parental rejection and dating anxiety and interpersonal cognitive distortions. According to the path analysis results, interpersonal cognitive distortions were partial mediator in relationship between perceived maternal rejection and dating anxiety. However, it was found that paternal rejection had a direct effect on dating anxiety, and cognitive distortions did not have a mediating role on this relationship. It was found that dating anxiety did not differ significantly in terms of gender, while it differed in terms of grade level. Warmth and acceptance centred parent-child relationship can be considered as a protective factor that can increase the dating anxiety by increasing the cognitive distortions
Views of Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers and Mentor Teachers about School Practicum%253A A Model for Web 2.0 based Supervision
Get PDFThe current research was conducted to evaluate the views of mentor and pre-service teachers participating school-based practicum about the effectiveness of Web 2.0 based supervision. The implementation process with a pilot study in the research lasted two years. In the pilot study, the evaluation of school-based practicum was made within the meetings among the lecturer and preservice teacher at the faculty. It was found that there should be an environment independent of time and place to give feedback to preservice teachers during the practicum. In this context, four of the groups of pre-service teachers were randomly selected. A responsible lecturer and mentor teacher were assigned to each group. Google Classroom environment was created to offer pre-service teachers an opportunity to receive feedback from different stakeholders such as a lecturer-mentor-preservice teacher. During the school based practicum, preservice teachers recorded their teaching practice in class and shared their teaching videos in online environment. The data obtained from tools such as video recording of classroom practice, online discussion and interviews were evaluated in the qualitative analysis program. As a result, it was determined that school based practicum in the online environment has its weaknesses and strengths. It was discovered that preservice teachers and teachers have differing views as well as overlapping views. In light of all these views, suggestions regarding school based practicum were made for a model for Web 2.0 based supervision
An Examination of Open-Ended Mathematics Questions Affordances
Get PDFThis study explores the affordances that the open-ended questions hold in comparison with those of closed-ended questions through examining 6th grade students performance on a mathematics test. For this purpose, a questionnaire including 2 open-ended and 2 closed-ended questions was applied to 36 6th grade students. The questions were prepared in the light of four categories%253A (i) question with one correct outcome (closed-ended), (ii) question with multiple fixed outcomes (closed-ended), (iii) question with multiple variable outcomes (open-ended), and (iv) question with limitless outcomes (open-ended). The collected data were analysed in terms of correct, incorrect, uncategorized and unanswered categories as well as with regard to the diversity of the responses. The findings reveal that students showed lower performances for the question that requires limitless outcomes, there were a lack of generalizations or general rules in their responses and they provided more diverse responses for the open-ended questions. The findings were discussed with regard to higher-order thinking skills such as creativity and divergent thinking as they are often associated with open-ended questions and their affordances. Finally some implications are put forward and further research areas are highlighted
Evaluation of Innovativeness Status of Teachers
Get PDFThis study aims to determine and evaluate the innovative teacher characteristics of teachers working at public-private science and social sciences high schools in Turkey. Science and social sciences high schools were established as educational institutions for students who will be scientists and are expected to be open to innovations, information technologies, learning, development and cooperation. The Innovative Teacher Characteristics Scale (ITCS) has been developed to obtain data. This research was carried out using the quantitative method based on the descriptive survey model. 384 teachers working at public-private science and social sciences high schools participated in this study. According to the findings, teachers perceive their being open to innovations, information technologies, learning, development and cooperation to be at a high level in the scope of sub-dimensions of innovative teacher characteristics. The mean scores of the factors show that the innovative teacher characteristics of the teachers differ significantly according to the types of schools (public-private), seniority, foreign language level and branch. On the contrary, they do not differ in terms of gender and education level

Since development begins with innovation in human resources and national development processes depends on regional and urban development, education, and educational institutes can be accepted as one of the initiatives and accelerative factors of development. Therefore, the role of city universities is important in the development of cities and countries. The purpose of this study is to determine the contribution of four major universities in Ankara to the social, cultural, and economic development of the city. The data were collected by a structured questionnaire, which was developed by the researchers to be used in interviewing with vice rectors of these four universities. Three of those vice rectors are from state universities, and one of them is from a private university. The qualitative data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. On the basis of results, it is concluded that universities in Ankara play their third mission by contributing to the development of their surroundings

Perceptions and Beliefs of the Teachers of Kindergarten and the First Primary Stage for Employing Digital Technologies in the Education Process in Jordan

It also aims to determine the views and perceptions of children towards these technologies and how to deal with them. The study also aims to determine the perceptions of kindergarten teachers and the primary stage towards employing digital technologies in children%252339%253Bs education. This study included two approaches%253A the qualitative to reveal the reality and perceptions of employing digital technologies through conducting interviews and recording observations, and the second one quantitative by preparing a scale to measure teachers%252339%253B perceptions towards employing digital technologies in children%252339%253Bs education (PBDT), which consists of (62) paragraphs measuring (6) Various aspects. The sample consists of (64) children from kindergarten and primary stage, from both the government and private sectors. As for the sample of teachers, it reached (99) teachers from kindergarten and primary stage teachers from both the government and private sectors. The study concluds that the majority of children use digital technologies, and this use is done under the supervision of parents%253B (YouTube) is the most used application, electronic games are the most topics that employ digital technologies, then religious studies and music. The study also shows that children prefer traditional games, story-telling from a mother or teacher, and studying through books instead of using digital technologies. The study also shows that teachers%252339%253B perceptions of employing digital technologies are moderate. Besides, the number of years of experience, the teaching stage, and the level of knowledge of digital technologies are all factors that do not affect teachers%252339%253B perceptions towards employing digital technologies
