Do Paternalist Approaches of School Principals Kill Teachers%252339%253B Autonomy%253F
This research aims to examine the relationship between school principals%252339%253B paternalist leadership behaviours and teacher autonomy. The research is a descriptive study in which causal comparison and correlational method are used together. 292 teachers were determined by using disproportionate sampling method. In this research, the Paternalist Leadership Behaviours Scale developed by Saylık amp%253B Aydın (2020), and the Teacher Autonomy Scale developed by Çolak (2016) were used. As a result, it was revealed that school principals show moderate paternalist leadership behaviours according to teacher perceptions. It is concluded that there is a moderate and negative relationship between school principals%252339%253B paternalist leadership approaches and teacher autonomy. As the paternalist leadership behaviours of school principals increase, teachers%252339%253B autonomous behaviour decreases. Another result of the research is that there is a positive relationship between family atmosphere and benevolence dimensions and teacher autonomy
Instructor Views on Technology Use and Coding Training
With the inclusion of the Information Technology and Software course in elementary and middle school curricula in Turkey, the Ministry of National Education has started to offer Technology Use and Coding courses. In this study, opinions of 12 instructors who taught Technology Use and Coding courses were consulted. The study aimed to determine the level of comprehension of the trainees through the evaluation of in-service training. The study was conducted as a case study, one of the qualitative research designs, and the data were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The data were analyzed using the MaxQDA 2020 software. As a result, it was determined that the trainees who attended the courses voluntarily were more willing to learn. The trainees who voluntarily attended these courses stated that they preferred these courses due to the popularity of coding training. While the duration of the course was found to be sufficient, it was determined that offering the courses after work hours caused a decrease in the motivation of the trainees. Inconvenience of training centers, lack of educational materials and insufficient number of instructors were stated as problems encountered in courses. It was observed that the attendees of the course liked the algorithm and block-based coding subjects, and that the instructors did not give enough importance to the subject of coding without computers
Seventh Graders Learning Strategies and Achievement Goal Orientations as Predictors of Their Achievement in Social Studies
It is aimed to examine the relationships among seventh-graders achievement goal orientations and learning strategies and achievement in Social Studies. In this quantitative study with a correlational design, the data were collected from 440 seventh-grade students studying in nine public middle schools selected by convenience sampling. As data collection tools, Learning Strategies for Social Studies Scale (Didin amp%253B Kasapoğlu, 2017), Social Studies-Oriented Achievement Goals Scale (Gezer amp%253B Şahin, 2016) and Personal Information Form were used. Seventh-graders achievement in Social Studies was determined based on end-of-term grades. The data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis depicted that seventh-graders learning strategies for Social Studies positively predicted their achievement in Social Studies, after controlling for gender. After adjustment for both their gender and learning strategies for Social Studies, the task-approach as one of the Social Studies-oriented achievement goals positively predicted their achievement in Social Studies
Determination of Pre-service Science Teachers%252339%253B Conceptual Understandings about the Solutions%253A Dissolving-Melting with Predict-Observe-Explain Technique
In the study, the effect of Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) activities carried out within the scope of argumentation-supported learning method on the detection of the conceptual understandings of the pre-service science teachers about Solutions%253A Dissolving-Melting was examined. Based on this main purpose, a case study was applied in the study, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group of the research consists of 22 pre-service science teachers. According to the data obtained at the end of the study, it was observed that pre-service teachers structured non-scientific claims and justifications, and could not use their refutation skills adequately before applications. It was observed that pre-service teachers were more willing and competent in developing scientific arguments in POE activities
A Study of Developing an Organizational Reputation Management Scale for Schools
This study aims to develop a scale to measure the organizational reputation of especially private schools and foreign private schools in today%252339%253Bs increasingly competitive environment. The study group of the research consists of 320 individuals who are 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students receiving education in private and foreign private schools and teachers from different branches. In the development phase of the scale, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to ensure validity and reliability. As a result of validity and reliability studies, the Organizational Reputation Management Scale for Schools was obtained. The analysis result has revealed a scale structure that consists of 7 dimensions and 38 items. Accordingly, the dimensions to determine the organizational reputation of private schools are quot%253BSocial Responsibility, Commitment to School, Relations with Alumni, School Environment, Leadership, School Management, and Financial Performancequot%253B. It is expected that the scale to be used by researchers and private schools will significant contributions to the literature on organizational reputation management
Views of the School Principals about the Inclusive Education and Practices
School principals restructure the school to cope with social changes and needs, fulfill the functions of the school to meet the needs of the society and improve the social quality of the school by providing organizational effectiveness. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the views of the school administrators working at pre-school education institutions and at the primary and secondary schools about the inclusive education. This study is designed as a case study, one of the qualitative research approaches. The participants of the study are the school administrators working at pre-school education institutions and primary and secondary schools in Çankaya and Yenimahalle districts of Ankara. The data were collected using the Semi-structured interview form which was developed by the author. The findings of the study indicate that the opinions of the school principals about the inclusive education are generally positive. However, the suggestions of school principals should be taken into account about increasing teachers%252339%253B knowledge and skills regarding the inclusive education and making objective and impartial educational evaluations and diagnoses
Reflections of National Education Councils on School Administration%253A Should the Councils Be on the Agenda again%253F
The aim of this research is to examine the National Education Councils (NECs) in the context of school management and to reveal the NECs reflections on today%252339%253Bs education system. The documents within the scope of the study (19 NECs and 14 official documents) were analyzed through descriptive analysis. As a result of the analysis, decisions regarding school administration were made in 12 of the councils. In addition, 4 dimensions came to the fore in terms of school administration. These are (i) personal rights, (ii) training needs, (iii) duties and responsibilities, and (iv) management style. According to the research findings, decisions regarding school administration have important reflections on today%252339%253Bs education system. Therefore, NECs can be considered as an implementation of governance and educational planning. As a result, it will be beneficial to continue the NECs to effectively solve the problems of today%252339%253Bs education system with the participation of stakeholders
Online Information Search Competencies of Prospective Philosophy Teachers in an Online Pedagogical Formation Program
This study aims to examine the knowledge-seeking competencies of prospective philosophy teachers who have received pedagogical training in an online environment according to their quot%253Breflective thoughtsquot%253B and quot%253BInventory of Online Information Search Strategiesquot%253B. The methodology of the study was the single-group pretest-posttest pattern, which is one of the weak experimental designs. The data were obtained from 49 prospective teachers. The results of the study indicated that the online training program created significant differences in all other sub-factors, except reflective thinking habit and understanding sub-factors, and overall total score according to both reflective thinking and online information search strategies. Prospective teachers have entered the process of deep thinking about teaching, evaluating their own experiences and making sense of them%253B that is, the process of deep thinking caused the change in conceptual perspectives. They gained the skill of evaluating themselves from a different perspective. Prospective teachers have also mentioned that they know the strategies for searching information on the Internet, they can use the evaluation and problem-solving strategies, they can select and compare the information available on the Internet, they can select and compare programs, they can interpret the information and programs that they find, and develop new ways according to their results, shows that they can transform them according to their fields
Qualitative Evaluation of Prospective Science Teachers Concept Maps about the Atom
Concept maps are used to assess and improve prospective teachers conceptual understanding levels. In this research, the aim was to describe prospective science teachers conceptual understanding of the atom by using concept maps. The research employed the case study approach, one of the qualitative research patterns. The research group consisted of 15 fourth-year prospective science teachers. The concept maps drawn by the participants were used to describe their conceptual understanding of the atom. For data analysis, the descriptive analysis method, one of the qualitative analysis methods, was used. The data obtained from the concept maps were divided into the categories previously defined by the researcher. The created categories were evaluated by two academics with expertise in physics education, and a correspondence analysis was conducted. As a result of the research, it was concluded that prospective teachers could establish successful and meaningful propositions in concept maps, however, most of the propositions were collected in the categories of meaningless, improvable, or acceptable
A Study on the Turkish Adaptation, Validity, and Reliability of Two Versions of Triangular Love Scale
This study aims to adapt Sternberg Triangular Love Scale (STLS) and its revised form of Sternberg Triangular Love Scale-Modified (STLS-M) to Turkish, analyze the validity and reliability of the scales, and assess the psychometric equivalence (measurement invariance) of two scales across groups. The study included two sample groups compromising of 408 (284 females, 124 male) university students who were involved in a romantic relationship and 632 (372 females, 260 male) university students who were not involved in a romantic relationship%253B the students were enrolled in various faculties of a public university in Turkey. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the construct validity of the two scales. The result of the analyses showed that both the STLS and STLS-M constituted three factors that are called intimacy, passion, and commitment. The Cronbachs alpha coefficients of the factors for the STLS were .91 for intimacy, .88 for passion, and .93 for commitment. The reliability coefficients for the STLS-M were also .88, .83, and .89 respectively. Consequently, the findings of the study exhibited that both the STLS and STLS-M had a similar construct, indicating very good psychometric properties, and met the criteria for measurement invariance
