Parental Views Regarding Distance Learning of Primary School Children and Screen Time during the Covid-19 Pandemic Process
This research aims to explore the views of parents regarding primary school students distance education experiences, the difficulties they face, the support they need in this process, and their screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic period during which face-to-face education was suspended and distance education was started. The sample of the study consisted of 400 parents whose children were attending primary school. An online questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Findings showed that children had difficulty in completing the given learning activities during distance education, and they needed adult support to complete these activities. In general, the participants stated that they were satisfied with the given instruction during the distance education process, but they wanted make-up lessons. It was observed that schools carry out educational activities with simultaneous collective lessons during distance education, and most of the difficulties children faced were caused by a lack of interest and resources. Finally, it was investigated that most of the primary school children spend more than 2 hours a day in front of the screen without parental supervision in this process. At the end of the research, some suggestions were offered such as planning the instructional activities more appropriately by making use of the experiences gained during the pandemic, developing effective learning materials by improving the digital knowledge and skills of teachers, and providing various pieces of training for parents
Development of a Self-Efficacy Scale for Supporting Early Literacy Skills
The aim of this study is to develop a measurement tool for self-efficacy perception to support early literacy skills. In the study, an item pool of 60 items was created by considering the relevant literature. The form was presented to the field experts who had studies in the relevant fields, and 5 items in the item pool of the scale were removed from the scale in line with the expert opinions. After taking expert opinions, the 60-item form was filled in by 493 pre-school teacher candidates at Sivas Cumhuriyet and Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa Universities. Before the analysis, extreme, deviating, missing or erroneous values were corrected. As a result of the corrections made, validity and reliability studies were carried out in line with the responses from 467 students. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was determined that the scale consists of 40 items and 6 sub-dimensions. The form consisting of 40 items and 6 sub-dimensions explains 65.10%25 of the total variance. These dimensions are named as Visual Reading, Listening %252F Monitoring, Phonological Awareness, Print Awareness, Basic Writing Skills and Assessment of Progress in accordance with the literature. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis, it was determined that the fit indices of the 6-factor structure were within acceptable limits. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient for the whole scale is 0.96, and the Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient for the sub-dimensions is between 0.84 and 0.91. As a result of these findings, it was revealed that the scale measures the self-efficacy perception to support early literacy skills in a valid and reliable way
Investigating the Scientific Research Inception Process From the Perspectives of Physicists
The aim of the present study was to explore how physicists start their research studies, how they identify their research questions and what factors influence their involvement in studying a specific research problem. The grounded theory methodology was adopted in the study by considering the qualitative nature of the research questions. The study was completed in two stages. At the initial stage of the study, face-to-face interviews were conducted with physicists to elicit the diversity of their views about the research inception process. At the second stage, an empirically-based multiple-choice survey was prepared on the basis of the themes generated from the responses of the interviewees. 140 physicists working in several Turkish universities completed the survey to reveal how common the diverse views, which were extracted from the interviews, among other physicists. The study results indicated that although physicists started their research studies mostly with a problem, they did not necessarily look actively for a problem when starting a new research study because new problems had already been identified during their previous research. According to the participant physicists, the research inception process was affected by a number of factors related with the available resources and the individual scientist conducting a given research study. These obtained results were discussed in terms of nature of science and nature of scientific inquiry, which are critical issues in science education
A Participatory and Democratic Education Administration Model%253A Local Education Boards
This article presents a mixed method study on how to develop a participatory education management model as an alternative to the Turkish education administration system. Consisting of qualitative and quantitative methods, the mixed research method has been adopted to acquire the required data. Qualitative phase the education administration systems applied in OECD member countries, documents and reports available in the literature were evaluated. To reach wider masses, an online survey aiming at collecting the views of teachers and administrators was carried out by using the quantitative phase of the mixed method. This study has laid it bare that the principles of good governance, common sense, transparency, accountability, participation, democracy, effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability stand forefront in educational systems that adopt the participatory education boards model. Eventually, a board%252Fcommission oriented local education administration model has been designed and developed as an alternative for the Turkish educational administration system
A Study of English Intercultural Learning Experience of Thai Tertiary English Majors
This study examined the English intercultural learning experience of 63 fourth-year Thai tertiary English majors through the students evaluation form, which included the Likert scale questionnaire, checklists, and open-ended questions. The questionnaires findings showed that the English majors evaluated gaining an English intercultural learning experience to a moderate amount. Then, the checklists findings informed that they mostly noticed learning cultures when the teachers used online media, shared experiences or viewpoints, and offered them to discuss cultural issues in the classroom. Finally, the open-ended questions results stressed that the participants required more opportunities to communicate in English, be familiar with varieties of English, and learn their native English teachers culture. Although they experienced learning target and foreign countries cultures from a Thai English language teacher to a large amount, they felt inferior to those countries and noticed the lack of promoting home cultural value in the classroom. The findings suggested that teachers should monitor themselves to ensure that they inspire students to be proud of their identity and nation before valuing others. Otherwise, students may be unable to express appreciation of their national identity to the world and lack a prerequisite qualification of the global-ready graduatesmdash%253Bdesirable national citizenship
Teaching Experiences of Science Teachers Working in Schools for the Visually Impaired
This study aims to determine the teaching experiences of science teachers working in schools for the visually impaired. In this context, the instructional arrangements made by the teachers for students with visual impairment in science lessons and the issues they had difficulties with were determined, and suggestions were offered for the effective and efficient implementation of science lessons. A phenomenological design was used in the study, and a sample consisting of 12 science teachers was formed. The interview form was used as the data collection tool, and content analysis was applied to analyse the data obtained. At the end of the research, five themes emerged%253A lesson plan, material, content presentation, teaching environment, and evaluation. It was determined those science teachers working in schools for the visually impaired made various instructional arrangements for students with visual impairment. In addition, it was determined that teachers had different problems within the framework of these five themes. Thus, some solutions were put forward to overcome these problems and conduct more effective and efficient science lessons. The results obtained were discussed within the scope of the relevant literature, and recommendations were given

Developing a Reading Comprehension Support Program for Primary School Students with Specific Learning Disabilities
Specific learning disabilities (SLD) is a general term referring to a heterogeneous group of disorders displayed by individuals with special needs. SLD refers to disorders in reading, writing and mathematics. A large proportion of students with SLD need support in reading as well as in reading comprehension skills, an important component and ultimate goal of reading. In this direction, this study aimed to develop the content of a reading comprehension program for second, third and fourth grade students with SLD. Designed as phenomenology which is a qualitative research approach, this study used semi-structured interview, observation, assessment tool administration, literature review and document analysis. Teachers reported that students with SLD have difficulties in reading, writing, reading fluency and reading comprehension%253B they lack self-confidence and need to be educated in special learning environments%253B they need support in Turkish and mathematics classes and a reading comprehension program is necessary for them. It was identified that expository and narrative texts and poems were used in primary school programs and some reading comprehension skills were acquired. There were two acquisitions related to reading comprehension in the SLD support program without any specifications as to how these should be taught and what content should be used. This study was limited to interviews conducted with five teachers and observations with 14 students with SLD and eight students with typical development. Although the studies on students with SLD have increased in Turkey in recent years, support programs that can be used at different education levels to improve reading, reading comprehension, writing and math skills for students with SLD are still limited. The program developed within the scope of this research was developed as printed material. Further studies can be planned to use the program in technological platforms by using tablets, computers, etc
