    Ultra-Violet Treatment for Fermenting Low-Salt Soya Sauce

    Low-salt soya sauce has become a market trend due to consumers' demand for a low sodium diet life. In tradition, a low-salt soya sauce (with salt concentration below 14.4%) is made from a high-salt one (18% salt concentration) through diluting or reducing the sodium content. The post processing deteriorates the quality of the soya sauce produce as some specific, beneficial chemical components are inevitably removed. In production of a native-born low-salt soya sauce, a key problem encountered is possible microbial contamination that easily develops in a low salt environment. In this study, we evaluated the effect of ultra-violet (UVC 254nm) irradiation on soya mash of 12% salt concentration fermented at 35°C. The ultra-violet treatment could effectively prevent the soya mash from microbial contamination

    Robotic Control by Teleoperation and Delay Time Issues Using the Internet

    Internet usage has become an essential part of our daily lives, it has become universal. The aim of this research is to consider existing Internet-based networks with regard to their support for the remote operation of robotic technology, in particular, looking at transmission speed and delay time as it relates to teleoperation. Currently dedicated connections are typically used when a high Quality of Service (QoS) is required for mission critical services or safety-critical systems (SCS), however such connections are very expensive to set up and maintain. Therefore, this study focuses on modifying existing internet networks in a manner to provide a better QoS with little additional cost. Using a number of microcontrollers, computers, and routers, two different protocols were used to control a robotic device remotely. Use of the Point-to-Point Tunnelling Protocol (PPTP) used for implementing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) was found to provide higher average transmission speeds compared to the using a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) which is a regular internet connection

    An RGB-NIR Image Fusion Method for Improving Feature Matching

    The quality of RGB images can be degraded by poor weather or lighting conditions. Thus, to make computer vision techniques work correctly, images need to be enhanced first. This paper proposes an RGB image enhancement method for improving feature matching which is a core step in most computer vision techniques. The proposed method decomposes near-infrared (NIR) image into fine detail, medium detail, and base images by using weighted least squares filters (WLSF) and boosts the medium detail image. Then, the fine and boosted medium detail images are combined, and the combined NIR detail image replaces the luminance detail image of an RGB image. Experiments demonstrates that the proposed method can effectively enhance RGB image; hence more stable image features are extracted. In addition, the method can minimize the loss of the useful visual (or optical) information of the original RGB image that can be used for other vision tasks

    Experimental Characterization of A Piezoelectric Transducer Array Taking into Account Crosstalk Phenomenon

    Ultrasonic transducer arrays are generally composed of several piezoelectric elements arranged in 1D or 2D ways. Crosstalk is an undesirable phenomenon decreasing the performance of these devices. It generates parasitic displacements at the elements' radiating surfaces, which changes the directivity of the array. Furthermore, the transducer's displacement plays a critical role in terms of the focal area and transferred intensities. The objective of this paper is to characterize a piezoelectric array composed of seven-elements made of PZ 27 ceramic experimentally. It investigates the effects of the crosstalk phenomenon on the array's performance in particular. The results have shown that the array's elements vibrate mainly in thickness mode, but the displacement is not uniform along their length due to the contribution of a parasitic length mode. Moreover, the major parasitic displacements are obtained on the neighboring passive elements: about -7.3 dB, -11 dB, and -12 dB, on the first, the second, and the third elements, respectively

    Natural Nanoporous Filter Material as a New High-Efficiency Natural Adsorbent to Remove Textile Dyes

    The objective of this paper is to perform the innovation design of removing most textile dyes that are harmful to the environment and might induce cancer. However, many methodologies had been developed for various chemical and physical processes to remove different dyes, such as ozone oxidation, electrochemical methods, chemical coagulation, hypochlorite oxidation, and adsorption to remove dyes from wastewater. A novel nanoporous filter methodology and mathematic simulations for adsorption were established as an effective medium for removing dyes from wastewater which was compared to other expensive treatments. The different concentrations of the dye liquid are used as a tester, and the different concentrations of nanoporous adsorbent were added in a uniform distribution and were tested with different time courses and under different temperatures. The final readings were measured by a spectrophotometer and fit into a mathematic model. The result indicates that this nanoporous and natural adsorbents are very good at cleaning the dyes in this system. The fit-in mathematic models could be applied in these tests which can be used in the industrial conditions for a low cost without secondary dye pollutions

    Thai Voice-Controlled Analysis for Car Parking Assistance in System-on-Chip Architecture

    This paper introduces an analysis of Thai speech recognition for controlled car parking assist in the system-on-chip architecture. The objective is to investigate the male and female voice command signals, including Thai and English words, issued by the native Thai users. Hardware and software co-design by the Xilinx VIVADO are designed on an ARM multicore processor and a reconfigurable system on a ZYBO board. The experiments for Thai and English word recognition are conducted by using the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient approach and presented in the form of spectrograms. The comparison of a voice command via Bluetooth and a reference command stored on an SD card and the ZYBO embedded board on a miniature electric vehicle is verified with the Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC). The experimental results show the accuracies of the received Thai/English, male/female, and indoor/outdoor voice commands as compared with the reference voice commands in the noisy surroundings. Hence, our system can support Thai/English and male/female voice commands to perform a set of actions for maneuvering a car by the PCC

    A Study on Dual-band Microstrip Rectangular Patch Antenna for Wi-Fi

    This paper presents the design of a dual-band microstrip patch antenna for Wi-Fi that operates at 2.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz. The antenna contains a rectangular patch with two rectangular slots. The first slot is incorporated in the patch while the second slot is incorporated in the ground plane. The antenna is based on a microstrip fed rectangular patch printed on the FR-4 epoxy substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6 mm with patch size 24 mm × 21 mm. The simulated result shows that the realized antenna successfully works on dual-band and subsequently achieves a bandwidth of 100 MHz and 200 MHz as well as the return loss about -29.9 dB and -15.16 dB for 2.5 GHz and 5.8 GHz respectively. A stable omnidirectional radiation pattern is observed in the operating frequency bands. The antenna meets the required specifications for 802.11 WLAN standards

    Adaptation of the Higher Education in Engineering to the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

    The 21st century will be the era of the fourth industrial revolution with the progressive introduction of the digital society, with smart/connected objects, smart factories driven by robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence. Manufacturing should be performed by the industry entitled 4.0. These are advanced technologies resulting from steady development of information technology associated with new objects and systems that can fulfil manufacturing tasks. The industry 4.0 concept relies largely on the ability to design and manufacture smart and connected devices that are based on microelectronics technology. This evolution requires highly-skilled technicians, engineers and PhDs well prepared for research, development and manufacturing. Their training, which combines knowledge and the associated compulsory know-how, is becoming the main challenge for the academic world. The curricula must therefore contain the basic knowledge and associated know-how training in all the specialties in the field. The software and hardware used in microelectronics and its applications are becoming so complex and expensive that the most realistic solution for practical training is to share facilities and human resources. This approach has been adopted by the French microelectronics education network, which includes twelve joint university centres and 2 industrial unions. It makes it possible to minimize training costs and to train future graduates on up-to-date tools similar to those used in companies. Thus, this paper deals with the strategy adopted by the French network in order to meet the needs of the future industry 4.0

    Propulsion Performance Analysis of Wave-powered Boats

    With the development of oceanographic research and marine environment protection, mobile marine platforms are applied for ocean observation for a long journey. Wave-powered boats are capable of applying wave motion to propel itself and make a long-duration survey. This paper presents the dynamics of the wave-powered boat under the excitation of the heave motion and pitch motion. Taking the wave-powered boat with double fins as an example, the heave and pitch motions of the boat are obtained by ANSYS-AQWA firstly. Then the relationship between propulsion performance and three factors, including  wave height, wave period, and restoring stiffness of torsion spring, was analyzed through multibody dynamics software ADAMS. With the increase of sea state from level 1 to level 4 the average propulsion speed increased from 0.4m/s to 1.4m/s. Under the same wave height and period, with the increase of restoring stiffness of torsion spring from 0.0125N·m/deg to 0.3N·m /deg, the propulsion speed of the wave-powered boat increases first and then decreases, and there exists an optimum stiffness. Through the calculation it is found that when the restoring stiffness of torsional spring is increased from 0.025N·m /deg to 0.2N·m /deg with the sea state level 1 to 4, the wave powered boat has better propulsion performance

    A Study on Verification of the Dynamic Modeling for a Submerged Body Based on Numerical Simulation

    This study proposed a procedure to identify maneuvering coefficients that brought about abnormal motions in the simulation of a submerged body. The first step in responding to abnormal motions was conducting stability analysis to determine whether the submerged body could be simulated. If doing so was feasible, sensitivity analysis was then performed to determine maneuvering coefficients that caused the abnormal motion in the simulation. Finally, we analyzed the order of maneuvering coefficients identified by the sensitivity analysis. We also compared it with empirical formulas and other results obtained from model tests. The dynamics model targeting a high-speed submerged body was indirectly verified by the above procedure. In this study, the effectiveness of the dynamic model was verified, and parameters causing the abnormal motion were identified in accordance with the developed procedure
