102. Book Blurbs: Joel Biermann, Day 7 for Work, Rest or Play
Concordia Seminary’s Dean of Theological Research and Publication Dr. Kevin Golden sits down with Professor of Systematic Theology Dr. Joel Biermann to discuss Biermann’s published book, “Day 7: For Work, Rest, or Play” (Concordia Publishing House, 2024). When thinking about what prompted him to write the book, Biermann extrapolates insights from Luther’s Small Catechism on the Sabbath and the Third Commandment: “The idea is not simply, ‘Don’t work on Sunday,’ or even ‘Make sure you go to church on Sunday’ … the Sabbath commandment becomes a part of living in tune with God and with creation as recipient[s] of God’s gifts.” Biermann offers the book as a change of perspective to consider, “What am I here to do? Work, but enjoy God, delight in Him and creation … sometimes when a whole afternoon [is] just spent doing nothing, but delighting with the grandkids, flying a kite, going hiking. That’s cool. That’s Sabbath.” Biermann’s hope for his readers is “to rehabilitate ‘Sabbath’ so it’s not just, ‘So what do I do on Sunday?’ … There’s a lot more going on there. I think there is a richness available to us that we should be tapping in to.”https://scholar.csl.edu/cjc/1105/thumbnail.jp

We Believe: Confessing and Experiencing the Nicene Creed
The Nicene Creed has been, and continues to be, the touchstone for theology and identity. Those who believe, teach and confess the faith in agreement with the Nicene Creed join the saints before, after, and around them in an unending hymn of praise and profession of faith. Following the structure of the creed itself, in this lecture we will discuss the ongoing global and universal implications of the Nicene confession of Christ, as well as its implications for us and for our salvation in our lived experience with the Creed
The Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life: Revealing God in the Fullness of Jesus
This sectional will explore the role of the Holy Spirit in revealing the divinity of Jesus Christ, focusing especially on the Nicene Creed’s statement: “I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life.” Drawing on both ancient and contemporary theologians, this session will argue that the Holy Spirit reveals the abstract truth of the divinity of the Son into reality, for our salvation. The theologians considered will include St. Athanasius, for his foundational contributions to Nicene theology; St. Gregory of Nyssa, for his developed Trinitarian Nicene thought; Dr. Leopoldo Sánchez, for his articulation of Spirit Christology and its modern ecclesial implications; and Dr. Khaled Anatolios, for his insights into how the Holy Spirit reveals Christ for the mission of the church. Through these theological perspectives, this sectional will demonstrate how the Holy Trinity is revealed in Scripture, doctrine, mission and the lived experience of the Christian

Death as Spiritual Warfare
According to Hebrews 2, the devil has the power of death. But the resurrection of Jesus sets us free. Our readiness to die overcomes the devil, and our faithful preparation for our last breath is our spiritual warfare
