Built in 1990, this boathouse replaced the dilapidated and overcrowded Lake Virginia Boathouse, which was built in 1961 after the original Lake Virginia Boathouse, built in 1904, was destroyed by Hurricane Donna during the summer of 1960. The new boathouse is named after Harold Alfond, a Rollins benefactor who was also a Rollins parent

The new Sports Center was possible largely because of Harold Alfond, a Rollins benefactor, and his alumni son, Ted Alfond The day following the dedication ceremony, donors and other members of the Rollins community attended an Athletic Gala at the Harold and Ted Alfond Sports Center.
