Finite Element Analysis of Interactions of between two cracks in FGM notched Plate under Mechanical Loading

    Get PDF
The investigation of multiple crack interactions in fracture mechanics is important to predict the safety and reliability of structures. This paper introduces a numerical investigation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack behaviour emanating from a semicircular notch and double semicircular notch and its interaction with another crack which may occur in various positions in (TiB/Ti) FGM plate subjected to tensile mechanical load. Young’s modulus of the functionally graded material plate varies along the specimen width (notch radius direction r-FGM) with exponential-law (E-FGM) function. Further, the Poisson’s ratio is taken as a constant in normal direction.  For this purpose the variations of the material properties are applied at the integration points and at the nodes by implementing a subroutine USDFLD in the ABAQUS software.  The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length, and the angle of rotation of cracks is demonstrated. The variation of the J-integral according to the position, the length, and the angle of rotation of cracks are examined; also the effect of different parameters for double notch FGM plate is investigated as well as the effect of band of FGM within the ceramic plate to reduce J-integral. According to the numerical analysis, all parameters above played an important role in determining the J-integral

Localized wrinkling of metal films on elastic and liquid substrates

    Get PDF
Global and localized wrinkling phenomena in films/substrates have been widely studied by means of experiment and theoretical analyses in the past two decades. They have shown broad application prospect in microstructure manufacture. The global wrinkling patterns with well-defined wavelengths can be readily fabricated in the polymer films, the metal films and the surface of modified elastic substrates by O2 plasma or UVO, and they have attracted much attention. For the localized wrinkling patterns, however, most previous studies were limited to polymer films, which while metal films were not properly considered. Recent studies have shown that wrinkles can be localized by constrained edges and cracks in metal films deposited on the elastic and liquid substrates. In this review, we focus on the formation and evolution mechanisms of these localized wrinkle patterns, and we aim to provide some useful guidance for future studies on designing the localized wrinkling patterns with real-time controllable dimension, orientation and morphology in the films/substrates

Mechanical Stability Investigation of Advanced Composite Plates Resting on Elastic Foundations Using a New Four-Unknown Refined Theory

    Get PDF
A refined and simple shear deformation theory for mechanical buckling of composite plate resting on two-parameter Pasternak’s foundations is developed. The displacement field is chosen based on assumptions that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, and the shear components of in-plane displacements give rise to the parabolic variation of shear strain through the thickness in such a way that shear stresses vanish on the plate surfaces. Therefore, there is no need to use shear correction factor. The number of independent unknowns of present theory is four, as against five in other shear deformation theories. It is assumed that the warping of the cross sections generated by transverse shear is presented by a hyperbolic function. The stability equations are determined using the present theory and based on the existence of material symmetry with respect to the median plane. The nonlinear strain-displacement of Von Karman relations are also taken into consideration. .The boundary conditions for the plate are assumed to be simply supported in all edges. Closed-form solutions are presented to calculate the critical load of mecanical buckling, which are useful for engineers in design. The effects of the foundation parameters,side-to-thickness ratio and modulus ratio, the isotropic and orthotropic square plates are considered in this analysis.are presented comprehensively for the mechanical buckling of rectangular composite plates

Stress intensity factors analyses for external semi-elliptical crack for repaired gas-pipeline by composite overwrap under pressure

    Get PDF
The purpose of this article is to present the stress intensity factors (SIF) solutions for semi-elliptic crack in pipelines under internal pressures, the stress intensity factors are calculated by the three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) for cracked pipelines and repaired pipe by composite patch. The distribution of normalized stress intensity factors (KI, KII and KIII) along the crack front for different crack lengths, crack depth, crack geometry, lap length and composite thickness was obtained by nodal calculations. Our FE results show that the crack frond is non-regular with respect to the rupture mode and presents three zones where the mixed mode (KII) is dominant from the deepest point to the point close to the surface of the pipe not the mode I cited in several studies. When the edge of the crack is close to the outer diameter, the mode III (KIII ) is dominant and this regardless of the state of the pipelines. it can also be noted that the composite repair reduces the SIF KI by 46% and the KII by 55% and the KIII by 72% near the outside diameter of the pipe in each zone of domination. However composite repair is very effective for a rectangular crack as for the semi-elliptical crack. this confirms that the elliptic crack is dominated by the mixed mode II not by mode I

Analysis of spatial vibrations of piezoceramic eccentric cylindrical shells interacting with an annular fluid layer

    Get PDF
The work is devoted to a numerical study of the behavior of vertically oriented eccentric (non-coaxial) electroelastic shells, containing a fluid in the gap between them. The solution of the problem is found in the framework of a three-dimensional formulation using the finite element method. The shells are made of the piezoelectric material polarized in the radial direction. Thin-walled structures are considered in the framework of the classical theory based on the Kirchhoff – Love hypotheses, as well as the equations of linear electroelasticity. The distribution of the electric potential through the thickness is assumed linear. The fluid is considered within the framework of a potential theory. The study of the low natural frequencies and vibration modes is carried out for different variants of the boundary conditions at the edges of the shells, the level of fluid in the gap and the eccentricity of the inner shell. The influence of the electric boundary conditions specified on the parts of the shells surfaces covered with electrodes is estimated

Duality of singularities of multiscale damage localization and crack advance: length variety in Theory of Critical Distances

    Get PDF
The existence of two singularities related to the stress field at the crack tip and blow-up kinetics of damage localization is considered as the physical basis for the interpretation of the Theory of Critical Distances. The free energy metastability of solid with defects and corresponding free energy release explain the conception of the Finite Fracture Mechanics in the presence of the finite amplitude energy barrier. The variety of crack paths is analyzed as duality of inherently linked two types of singularities related to the singularity of multiscale damage kinetics under crack nucleation and singularity of stress field at the crack tip as the classical framework of fracture mechanics. The singularity of multiscale damage kinetics is a natural precursor of crack nucleation that could provide in some cases the totally independent scenario of fracture from the stress singularity at the crack tips. The influence of two singularities with the nature of intermediate asymptotical solutions for stress at the crack tip and damage localization kinetics over the set of spatial scales represents two attractors, which provides the variety of crack paths for corresponding loading conditions

Construction of Analytical Eigensolutions for Isotropic Conical Bodies and Their Application for Estimation of Stresses Singularity

    Get PDF
A complete set of eigensolutions is constructed for different variants of circular conical bodies: homogeneous cone with one lateral surface (solid cone), homogeneous cone with two lateral surfaces (hollow cone) and composite cone for different variants of boundary conditions on the lateral surface. It has been shown that the constructed eigensolutions can be readily applied for estimation of the character of stress singularity at the vertices of conical bodies. The character of stress singularity at the vertex of the solid and hollow cones for different variants of boundary conditions on the lateral surfaces has been defined by direct numerical simulations. Numerical results obtained for solid, hollow and compose cones under different boundary conditions on the lateral surfaces are discussed

Multi-parameter fracture mechanics: Crack path in a mixed-mode specimen

    Get PDF
A mixed-mode geometry has been chosen to investigate a crack propagation using the multi-parameter fracture mechanics concept. The so-called Williams’ series expansion is used for the crack-tip stress field approximation. It has been shown that application of the generalized fracture mechanics concept can be crucial for materials with specific fracture behaviour, such as elastic-plastic or quasi-brittle one, when fracture occurs not only in the very vicinity of the crack tip, but also in a more distant surrounding. Then, considering the higher-order terms of the Williams’ expansion in fracture criteria (describing the crack stability and/or crack propagation direction) can bring more precise results. The coefficients of the Williams’ expansion must be calculated numerically (for instance by means of the over-deterministic method in this work) for each cracked configuration, which is very time-consuming, and the analysis is very extensive even for a few basic cracked specimen configurations. On the other hand, a suitable choice of the geometrical configuration of the cracked disc enables performing experiments only on the specimens that could prove the theory about the importance of using the higher-order terms

A Determination of fracture toughness in plain concrete specimens by R curve

    No full text
Since the last two centuries, concrete has become the number one building material in the world. Therefore, we are interested in studying the mechanical behavior at failure of this material and calculate its toughness. In this paper, we trace the R-curve to determine the critical stress intensity factor and the crack evolution by specifying the three stages:  crack stopping stage, stable propagation stage and an unstable propagation stage. The R-curve was obtained from the curve connecting the crack mouth opening to the applied load for prismatic specimens normalized by ASTM and notched laterally (SENB). These specimens are made from concrete with 25 MPa compressive strength and subjected to three-point bending. The dimensionless ratio of the initial notch length and the specimen width is between 0.3 and 0.6. During loading, we can observe an elastic deformation followed by a significant plastic deformation, the average value of the critical stress intensity factor found is 1.05 MPa.m1/2. &nbsp

Friction influence on the AA6060 aluminium alloy formability

    Get PDF
Using a finite element calculation code, this work analyses the influence of friction during a stamping test conducted on the AA6060 aluminium-based alloy. The study focuses on phenomena happening when the sheet necking appears. This condition, based on the Hill’s localized necking theory and the Swift’s diffuse necking theory, is dependent on the material hardening index. This work shows that the punch stroke at the necking condition point is maximum when the main strain measured on the sheet surface are unbalanced and close to a balanced biaxial tension condition
