Bi-level Hybrid Uncertainty Quantification in Fatigue Analysis: S-N Curve Approach

    Get PDF
Due to its physical complexity, fatigue phenomenon inherently presents a significant number of uncertain parameters to be predicted. In uncertainty quantification (UQ), research has demonstrated that even a small variation in uncertain input quantities (UIQs) may lead to a wide dispersion in the system response quantities (SRQs). In this paper, a bi-level hybrid UQ analysis of a fatigue problem is presented based on the S-N curve approach. The uncertain fatigue analysis presented is able to deal simultaneously with aleatory- and epistemic-type uncertainties in two levels (a SRQ in the first level is a UIQ in the second level). To this end, the proposed scheme is tested for an AISI 4130 clamped beam subjected to a concentrated load, which material information comes from experiments reported in the literature. The UIQs are geometrical parameters, material properties, loading magnitude, and stress, while the SRQs are the stress (which is also a UIQ for fatigue life) and fatigue life. The results evidenced that the uncertain fatigue analysis, instead of providing a unique value for a SRQ, now produces a possible range of values. Therefore, depending on the risk an engineer can take on a design, there will be a corresponding level of optimization achieved

    Get PDF
Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are increasingly used in the construction of high-rise buildings which require high strength and large working space especially at lower stories. As compared to reinforced concrete columns, existence of the exterior steel tube not only bears a portion of axial load but also most importantly provides confinement to the infill concrete.with the confinement provided by the steel tube, axial strength of the infill concrete can be largely enhanced.this paper presents the investigation effect of impact load on concrete-filled steel tube columns under fire by numerical simulations using ABAQUS software.the results indicate that the CFST sections with larger confinement factor ξ=1.23 behaved in a very ductile manner under lateral impact. And the sections with smaller confinement factor ξ=0.44  generally behaved in a brittle mechanism

Experimental Evaluation of Effects of Steel and Glass Fibers on Engineering Properties of Concrete: Engineering Properties of Concrete

    No full text
This paper experimentally investigates the effect of steel and glass fibers on the engineering properties of concrete. To achieve this, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.9% by volume fraction of steel and glass fibers are added in concrete mixtures with water-to-cement (W/C) ratios 0.35 and 0.45. For each ratio of water to cement, 21 cubic samples for compressive strength tests, 14 cylindrical samples for tension strength tests, and also 14 prismatic samples for three-point flexural strength tests were prepared. The experimental results show that adding 0.3% to 0.9% % steel fibers for concrete increases simultaneously the compressive, tension, and also flexural strengths in comparison with plain concrete. Adding glass fibers only between 0.3% to 0.6% increases the compressive strength. The results reveal that the best range for reinforcing concrete with steel fiber is 0.3% to 0.9 % and glass fiber is 0.3% to 0.6 % by volume fraction of fiber to improve the engineering strengths concrete. As a rule of thumb, the tension and flexural strengths of concrete could be explained as 8% and 13% of the compressive strength, respectively

Nowadays, the environmental impact of cementitious material industry and more generally of building activities is matter of concern, especially in terms of their effects on climate change and consumption of natural resources. Within this context, the aim of this paper is the investigation of the role of biochar, a solid carbonaceous by-product material resulting from biomass pyrolysis/gasification of residual biomass, as a sustainable ingredient for the production of cementitious materials, combining carbon sink properties with enhanced mechanical properties. Although biochar is mainly investigated as agricultural amendment, there is also evidence that biochar may be a eco-friendly material to enhance the sustainable performance of cementitious materials. As outlined in literature, biochar can be used as filler to modify the nanogranular nature of cement matrix, or as substitute of clinker to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases related to cement production. In this work, biochar is added as micro-nano particles in different cementitious composites, i.e. cement pastes and mortars, as a function of filler or partial substitute of cement. The main mechanical properties of biochar-based materials are then investigated to determine the optimal percentage of biochar addition

Fatigue Analysis of Bitumen Modified with Composite of Nano-SiO2 and Styrene Butadiene Styrene Polymer

    Get PDF
Since fatigue cracking is caused in the middle-temperature conditions due to the stresses from heavy traffic and as the bitumen plays a very important role in controlling this failure, therefore, in recent years, the production of the modified bitumen that can give a good performance in the middle temperatures has always attracted the interest of researchers. One of these bitumen modifiers is the styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) polymer. Due to the phase separation of bitumen and polymer, aging and oxidation, this polymer may not exhibit expected field performance at middle temperatures. Therefore, in this research, it is attempted to analyze the middle-temperature performance using the combination of nano-SiO2 and SBS polymer in the bitumen modification. In this paper, the addition of SBS and nano-SiO2 to the base bitumen resulted in the reduction of the complex modulus, phase angle, storage modulus and loss modulus at middle temperatures, thereby improving the potential of fatigue failure resistance. In general, considering the requirement for the rotational viscosity value up to 3 Pa.s at 135 °C and also, regarding the economic issues in choosing a lower percentage, the combination of 4.5% SBS + 3% nano-SiO2 is selected as the optimal composite

Elastoplastic analysis of cracked Aluminum plates with a hybrid repair technique using the bonded composite patch and drilling hole in opening mode I

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to analyze the performance of composite bonding repair, hole drilling and the combination of the two techniques (hybrid repairs) by tensile tests and to show the interest of a hybrid repair versus to other processes. These repair techniques can apply in different branches of engineering: mechanical, aerospace, civil, naval, etc. The finite element method with the ABAQUS code was used to model the mechanical behavior of the different repair techniques. The Notch Stress Intensity Factor (NSIF) is adopted to model the behavior of the cracked notch based on the volumetric method. The size of the plastic zone, the intensity of the normal σyy stress, the peel stress and CTOD are combined to model the proposed technics repairs. Although the bonded composite is very strong, the application of a drilling hole results in additional energy absorption and reduces the level of the maximum normal stress by about 50% compared to a simple patch only. The use of a hybrid repair has a high resistance compared to other proposed methods, improves the mechanical strength and increases the life of the cracked structure compared to a single composite joint and a repair by drilling hole only

Finte element modeling of the behavior of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) during high pressure torsion process.

High Pressure Torsion (HPT) is a highly effective super-plastic deformation process for obtaining nano-materials with high performance mechanical properties. In view of its optimization, it is of paramount importance to evaluate the relations between the behavior of the material under the effects of different processing parameters. In this context, this work aims to highlight the plastic strain distribution in the deformed material as a function of the hydrostatic pressure, the torsion angle and the temperature of the material applied during the process. A typical amorphous polymer (Polymethyl-Methacrylate: PMMA) has been tested. Firstly, in order to identify the material parameters of a phenomenological elasto-viscoplastic model compression tests at different temperatures and strain rates have been carried out. Then, the distributions of the effective plastic strain, the equivalent plastic strain rate and the hydrostatic stress were analyzed using finite elements method. Recommendations on process conditions were proclaimed at the end of this work according to the obtained numerical results

Numerical modeling of bending, buckling, and vibration of functionally graded beams by using a higher-order shear deformation theory

    Get PDF
The objective of this work is to analyze the behavior beams functionally graded, simply supported, under different conditions such as bending, buckling, and vibration and this by use shear deformation theories a two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3D). The proposed theories take into account a new field of displacement which includes indeterminate whole terms and contains fewer unknowns, compared to other theories of the literature; by taking account of the effects of the transverse shears and the thickness stretching. In this theory, the distribution of the transverse shear stress is hyperbolic and satisfies the boundary conditions on the upper and lower surfaces of the beam without the need for a shear correction factor. In this type of beam the properties of the materials vary according to a distribution of the volume fraction, the Hamilton principle is used to calculate the equations of motion, and in order to check the accuracy of the theory used comparison is made with the studies existing in the literature

Microstructural and mechanical characterization of a stainless-steel wire mesh–reinforced Al-matrix composite: Bimatallic components for lightweight design

    No full text
The microstructure and mechanical properties of stainless-steel AISI 304 wire mesh–reinforced AlSi9Cu-matrix composite specimens obtained by gravity casting were investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscope analyses were carried out on samples in both as-cast and solution heat treated conditions. The obtained results showed the absence of intermetallic phases at the insert/Al-matrix interface but even a significant fraction of lack-of-filling defects as well as lack-of-bonding areas that weekend the interface itself. The solution heat treatment, on the other hand, induced the precipitation of a thick and brittle intermetallic layer in the areas where a metallurgical bonding formed during casting. Moreover, the silicon particle spheroidization, improved the ductility of the matrix. The resulting microstructure allowed to obtain a slight improvement of elongation at failure of the compound casting compared to that of the aluminum alloy. Finally, basing on the obtained results, improvements are suggested that take into account both the preconditioning of the reinforcement surface and its geometry

A brief review of fatigue design criteria on offshore wind turbine support structures

    Get PDF
In this paper, a brief review of the main fatigue design criteria and some advanced fatigue approaches applied to offshore structures (e.g. offshore wind turbines) are presented. It is extremely important to understand the fatigue phenomenon and how it affects structures since offshore structures are constantly submitted to cyclic loading and corrosive attacks that aggravate the problem. All the influencing factors and approaches used during the design phase are also discussed
