A new Tongue-orchid (Orchidaceae) in southwest Spain: Serapias occidentalis

    Get PDF
Serapias occidentalis is described from several populations (Campo Lugar, Obando and Aljucén) scattered over the Guadiana river basin in Extremadura, Spain. Morphological characters defining the new species are analysed, and differences with related Serapias taxa from the Iberian Peninsula and other European countries are established. In addition, distribution, ecology and reproduction are discussed.

    Get PDF
A critical checklist of the Mesoamerican and South American species and hybrids of Blechnum is presented. For each entry the place of original publication, types, authors, and pertinent synonyms are included. Most of the synonyms are cited with their nomenclatural types. Information on geographical distribution and altitudinal range, ecology, as well as morphological and nomenclatural comments pertinent to the treated taxa are also included. Hybrids that have been cytologically and nomeclaturally studied are treated independently, while not formally described hybrids are cited under their putative parents.

On generic rank and phylogenetic relationships of Dorycnopsis Boiss. (Leguminosae, Loteae)

    Get PDF
Nuclear ribosomal ITS sequence data as well as morphological data show that Dorycnopsis gerardii (L.) Boiss. can not be placed in the genus Anthyllis L. The genus Dorycnopsis Boiss. includes two species, D. gerardii and D. abyssinica (A. Rich.) V.N. Tikhom. et D.D. Sokoloff (=Vermifrux abyssinica (A. Rich.) J.B. Gillett). Morphological similarity between Dorycnopsis gerardii and Anthyllis onobrychioides Cav. might be best explained by evolutionary parallelism. Anthyllis (including Hymenocarpos Savi but excluding Dorycnopsis and the monotypic Tripodion Medik.) is well-resolved as a highly supported monophyletic group in analyses of nrITS data set.

Further naturalised Cactaceae in northeastern Iberian Peninsula

    Get PDF
During the floristic work carried out in 2004 in the Baix Camp region of Tarragona (NE Spain) we found four new species of alien naturalised Cactaceae. Of these, three are reported for the second time from Europe and the other is new to Catalonia region. Southern Catalonia, with eleven species of Cactaceae, harbours the highest diversity of the family in Europe. Our results demonstrate that this diversity is even higher than previously believed. The introduction of these exotic taxa is, once again, due to the development of gardening based exclusively on foreign elements, to the unscrupulous and uncontrolled dumping of their remains in the natural environment, and to the existence of a favourable climate.

Andromonoecy and buzz pollination in Solanum species (Solanaceae) endemic to the Canary Islands

    Get PDF
We investigated the pollination and reproductive biology of two Canary Island endemics, Solanum vespertilio and S. lidii (Solanaceae). We measured male function (pollen development), female function (fruit initiation) and spatial arrangement of reproductive parts within flowers and inflorescences. Furthermore, we observed flower visitors and monitored visitation rates. Both species of Solanum display andromonoecy: Longstyled flowers are functionally hermaphrodite and borne proximally on the inflorescences, while short-styled flowers are functionally male and borne distally on inflorescences. Large bees capable of buzzing were the main flower visitors. In particular, the endemic Canarian bumblebee, Bombus terrestris canariensis, was a frequent visitor and pollen vector of S. vespertilio.

    Get PDF
Karyotype analyses of eight species of the Quercus genus were performed and are reported here. Five species (Q. candicans, Q. crassifolia, Q. elliptica, Q. hintonii and Q. urbanii) belong to the Lobatae section and three (Q. frutex, Q. obtusata and Q. rugosa) to the Quercus section. This is the first report of the chromosome numbers of all of them except Q. rugosa, and demonstrate that they are diploid (2n = 2x = 24) and the karyotypes are moderately asymmetrical.

Lectotypification of three endemic taxa of Ammi L. (Apiaceae) from the archipelago of the Azores

    Get PDF
Lectotypes are designated here for taxa of the genus Ammi L. described by H.C. Watson from the Azores islands. The names Ammi huntii H.C. Watson, A. seubertianum (H.C. Watson) Benth. & Hook. f. ex Trel. and A. trifoliatum (H.C. Watson) Benth. & Hook. f. ex Trel. still remain untypified from their description. Those typifications constitute the starting point to further taxonomical studies on that aggregate. Watson. Los nombres de Ammi huntii H.C. Watson, A. seubertianum H.C. Watson) Benth. & Hook. f. ex Trel. y A. trifoliatum H.C. Watson) Benth.

Endl. (Capparaceae)

    Get PDF
Steriphoma paradoxum (Jacq.) Endl. subsp. venezolanum (Briq.) X. Cornejo is proposed as a new combination because of marked differences in gynophores, stamens, and pedicels between the Mesoamerican and Venezuelan populations. The Briquet binomial is recovered for the subspecific range.
