Towards the Synthesis of Maleimide-Tryptophan Hybrids as Potential Antibiotics
40 p.As antibiotic resistance in many bacterial strains has risen in recent years, a push to
develop novel molecular scaffolds with antibacterial activity has risen as well. Novel scaffolds
are necessary as bacteria have developed mechanisms of resistance to the current scaffolds
available. This study utilized the strategy of molecular hybridization to attempt to develop a
novel antibacterial scaffold. The two pharmacophores used in this study were 3,4-diaryl
maleimides and tryptophan/5-hydroxytryptophan. These pharmacophores have both exhibited
antibacterial activity in previous studies. Acetylation with acetic anhydride was used to prepare
the maleic anhydrides before their use in amination to synthesize the molecular hybrids. Sixteen
3,4-diaryl maleimide-5-hydroxy tryptophan hybrids and twelve 3,4-diaryl maleimide-tryptophan
hybrids were synthesized into crude products

I am inspired by moments in time, attempting to recreate feelings I cannot put to words in a surreal and gritty fashion. Trail based vegetation surveys of invasive plant species on Riparian Wetland adjacent to the Paw Paw River, Southwest Michigan
v, 31 p.Riparian wetlands have a wide range of functions, they provide a unique home to many plants and animals, they are a safe way for animals to travel, and they often serve as a buffer between humans and nature. These wetlands have to face a multitude of threats; draining for agricultural purposes, farming creating waste that enters riparian wetlands, the effects of climate change leading to a change in periods of drought, and the spread of non-native plants. While waste and the draining of wetlands is known to wipe them out, there is not yet as much known about the effect of invasive species spread in these areas and human disturbance. We conducted our research on a wetland by Wolf Lake in Van Buren County privately owned by the Diget family. Kalamazoo College research students are interested in this land as a complement to the Lillian Anderson Arboretum, which has been part of many different research projects since 1999. This study focused on surveying forested bottomland and riparian systems with a network of rivers and streams and invasive plant species on the site and mapping manmade trails. Using Trimble GPS, we created a survey study looking at patterns of invasive plant species distribution, trail effect, and the location of native plant species. This information was then combined with the oral history of the land from its owners, the Diget family, who have been living on it for over half a century. The purpose of this study was to map most of the man-made trails on the study site and look at the patterns in the spread of native and invasive plant species. Our data showed that most open sky with high levels of sunlight was on trails due to lack of trees on the road, however there was a separate effect of the trail itself on the plants beyond just the increase in light levels. Native species abundance increased in low light and low anthropogenic stress areas that were off-trail, while invasive species abundance increases on-trail points with high levels of light and human disturbance
Presence and Touch: Abolitionist and Intersectional Birth Work During the COVID-19 Pandemic
64 p.This paper seeks to examine, through a series of case studies, the birth work initiatives that align with intersectionality and abolition feminism. I argue that birth work cannot be separated from the various contexts in which it is used. This decontextualization is routine practice in Labor and Delivery Rooms in hospitals throughout the United States, causing physiological, psychological, and economic harm to birthing people, their children, their partners, and their families. When many types of people are welcomed into birth work as doulas, midwives, and birthing people, birth work can operate in the communities from which birth workers come. In other words, recontextualizing birth work based on socialization factors including, but not limited to, race, class, gender, ability, sexual orientation, and ethnicity has the potential to reduce harm beyond the physiological process of birth. If birth workers and birthing people work together to bring new life into the world in ways that reduce or eliminate harm, then the possibility of a society founded upon communal principles of love, support, and justice does not seem as utopian or naive as it is often made out to be. Intersectional abolition feminism frames the kind of birth work advocated for in this paper. As argued by seasoned abolitionist activists such as Angela Davis and intersectionality theorists such as Kimberle Crenshaw, notions of reform as the antidote for structurally oppressive institutions serve to bolster and expand these institutions, rather than dismantle them. In other words, in an institution such as a prison - or, as discussed here, a hospital - in which the daily routine is designed to be harmful and discriminatory, reforms, no matter how outwardly benevolent or well-intentioned, will only maintain that routine through different avenues. Therefore, dismantling and rebuilding these institutions is the only choice we have
Perseverance in Zhang Yimou's To Live
37 p.To Live is a masterful piece of work by Zhang Yimou that reflects on the specific experiences of Fugui and his family – however, because of the film’s theme of perseverance, it is a story many people can learn from and relate to in their own personal reflections. Films have the potential to help people visualize the past in creative ways.34 People can challenge themselves to examine history through films like To Live that present thoughtful, retrospective narratives of the past. Zhang Yimou’s To Live adds a dimension to the study of modern Chinese history by creating a film that invites critical thinking and discussion on a complex and tumultuous period in Chinese history
Investigating Impacts of Forest Management on Microclimate in Northern Michigan Forests
iv, 19 p.Climate change is shifting the environment that boreal forests reside in, such as through increasing temperatures. These changes have negative impacts that are placing the future of individual tree species at risk, especially those already located at the edge of their ranges, which include the Northern Michigan key species Paper birch (Betula papyrifera). In order to help maintain forest resilience, forest management must take into account the compounding effects of climate change-induced global warming and management-induced local warming. This study analyzed how forest management-induced changes in canopy cover affected microclimate in three varying forest ages. We predicted microclimate measurements (air temperature, soil temperature and percent full sun) to be the highest in the youngest forest age due to its expected least amount of canopy cover compared to the middle aged and reference forests. We found a strong correlation between % of full sun and temperatures for soil and air. We were also able to quantify 25% to be the threshold for canopy removal before a substantial increase in microclimate is observed. In order to abide by the IPCC standards of keeping warming below 2°C, we recommend forest managers to maintain around 80% of canopy
Researching the Effects of Prophylactic Antibiotics in Orthopedic Surgery

Medical Center (DMC), I was given the contact information for
Dr. George McKelvey, a Research Associate at NorthStar
Anesthesia. Dr. McKelvey had many current projects, but the
most intriguing to me was the effects of prophylactic antibiotics
in orthopedic surgery. The project was a retrospective study using
the database PubMed. Dr. McKelvey required my assistance
conducting literature reviews, analyzing the data from each
relevant study, and recording specific data in an Excel form.
There were 120 papers to review, 27 of which were deemed
relevant for the scope of the study. Most of the studies focused on
total knee and hip arthroplasties but expanded to other orthopedic
surgeries as well. After the research was conducted no final
analysis was necessary, but the use of prophylactic antibiotics
was a controversial topic in medicine. Some argue that it was
expensive and not necessary, but others revealed that
prophylactic antibiotics are promising for the prevention of
infection and further intervention. I value the experiences and
opportunities Dr. McKelvey and this project have provided me
with. I found my research skills have become highly developed
through this project as well as my ability to self-manage and

Host plant selection and larval performance of the endangered Mitchell’s satyr butterfly (Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii) on two Carex species
Mitchell’s satyr butterfly (Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii) is a federally endangered butterfly extant to Michigan and Indiana and is known to use Carex sedge species as host plants. In Fish & Wildlife’s Mitchell’s satyr butterfly (hereafter MSB) recovery plan, propagation programs are a critical component for the survival of this species. Understanding host plant suitability is the crux of such programs. Carex stricta is the traditional host plant used for rearing despite the existence of many Carex species in MSB’s natural fen habitat. There is only one other quantitative study examining MSB larval feeding preference. My study attempted to expand on this knowledge by examining 1st instar larvae host plant preference, development, and survivorship. Additionally, plant tissue samples were sent to a lab where carbon and nitrogen content of host plant tissues was determined. In the choice test between two sedge species, Carex stricta and Carex atlantica, I found that Mitchell’s satyr 1st instar larvae do not have a sedge preference. However, larvae feeding on C. stricta developed significantly faster than did those larvae feeding on C. atlantica. Survivorship within my study was 60% and was consistent with rates obtained from the larger population being reared in the same room. C. stricta was found to have a higher carbon content, while C. atlantica had a higher nitrogen content. These results acted as a reference for potential host plant preference and nutrition but were not an analytical focus. My study suggests the traditional use of C. stricta by propagation programs is beneficial for larvae development, though this study warrants repetition owing to its small sample sizes. However, by knowing which host plants are more suitable for rearing, propagation programs increase their success and therefore, contribute to the recovery of this endangered species
The International Trade Union Confederation: An International Anomaly or Normality
53 p.This paper simultaneously serves as a primer for new scholarship on the ITUC, while also analyzing what type of organization it by utilizing Union of International Association (UIA) system of classification. ITUC is found to be a general semi-autonomous occupation, and geographically fragmented NGO. A brief history of international trade unionism from the 20th century to now is also provided, alongside a summary of the different bodies of the ITUC and their mechanisms.
