Exploring Cultural Perspectives on Depression: Comparing the Latino, Chinese, and African cultures in the United States
1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HDepression is a mental health disorder that is recognized and diagnosed in the Western world, but the way it is viewed and treated can vary across different cultures. In Latino cultures, depression is often viewed as a weakness, and there may be a stigma associated with seeking treatment. In Chinese culture, depression is often associated with physical symptoms, such as headaches and fatigue, and is seen as a sign of imbalance in the body. In African cultures, depression may be viewed as a spiritual or moral issue rather than a medical condition. In contrast, in the Western world, depression is typically viewed as a medical condition that requires treatment, often through therapy and medication. There is also greater awareness and understanding of the symptoms and impact of depression.Kalamazoo College. Department of Psychology. VanLiere Symposium, 202
A Future Syndemic : An Investigation into Perinatal Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis in the United States.
iv, 43 p.Despite a large decrease in cases of perinatal transmission of HIV from mother to child in the United States over the last several years, perinatal HIV has not been completely eliminated. The cases that continue to occur are rooted in social factors and disparities disproportionately affecting people of color and those at lower socioeconomic statuses. Further, there has been a 291% increase nationwide in congenital syphilis between 2015-2019 with cases still on the rise. This investigation explores the root causes for continued cases of perinatal HIV and also attempts to explain the significant rise in Congenital Syphilis in the United States. Through interviews with public health professionals and experts, and analysis of local and national data, it was determined that race and economic status is a leading determinant in the transmission of HIV and CS from mother to child. Socioeconomic disadvantage in racial groups, specifically Black and Hispanic communities, combined with institutionalized racism leads to lower health outcomes for mothers and infants. This project serves as a review of the impact of social determinants on health for individuals in the United States, emphasizing a call to action to prompt sexual health education, prevention and intervention programs, and community advocacy. Heckscher-Ohlin Model: A Theoretical Examination on Capital and Labor Movement in 2-Country Case – The United States and Vietnam
1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HInternational outsourcing in the past few decades has emerged as a common practice among developed countries that outsource production to third-world countries whose labor cost is just a fraction of what they pay at home. Firms often choose labor-intensive industries when utilizing this service abroad. In Vietnam, many American textile firms allocate more capital to the Vietnamese labor force for a cheaper cost. This paper seeks to analyze this instance with the use of the Heckscher-Ohlin Model in an attempt to give recommendations to the Vietnamese economy regarding this popular phenomenon. This paper first gives an overview of the Heckscher-Ohlin Model together with international outsourcing along with a more in-depth analysis of the practice of outsourcing in the United States and Vietnam. By analyzing the capital and labor movement between two countries in the textile industry, this paper hopes to shed light on the practice that is long believed to be beneficial for the economy. The conclusion of this paper recommends that even though providing outsourcing services to developed countries might have promising advantages such as an increase in GDP or employment rate, overuse of this practice will eventually result in consequences that could potentially be detrimental to the textile industry of Vietnam in specific, and the entire country’s economy in general.Kalamazoo College. Reflection of My Meijer Merchandising Internship
7 p.Over the summer of 2023, I received an opportunity to work at the Meijer corporate headquarters as a merchandising intern. I found out about this internship through my sister in-law, who currently works at the Meijer headquarters. She went through the same internship, loved every second of it, and after was offered a job to start working right away. At Kalamazoo College, every graduating senior must complete a Senior Integrated Project, or SIP for short. Being a business major, I was given three different options for my SIP. The three options consisted of extending a course paper or assignment, online skill building courses, or an internship. I received my internship offer before hearing of the options for the SIP, so I knew right away that I wanted to cover my experiences at the Meijer headquarters. My essay will relate my learning through my classes at Kalamazoo College and how that helped my work experience in my internship
The Application of Microsoft Excel
9 p.Microsoft Excel is a cellular spreadsheet application available for most devices and platforms. It is helpful in workplaces and business environments where people analyze, budget, forecast, etc. Excel involves the organization of different columns and rows to store data and represent data in distinct ways. While economics classes give many theoretical lessons on how the concepts of supply, demand, and various underpinnings work through different situations, excel allows for the practical application of this knowledge through multiple tools. I had the decision over what SIP option I had to take this summer; any option inevitably expanded my skillsets in some areas. I took 2 Microsoft Excel classes over a summer with coursework spanning 50 hours. I needed to gain experience with Excel to move past trauma regarding tedious economics-related coursework and continue my economics studies. I came out of these courses with a better understanding of shortcuts, graph creation, and other app-specific functions
Harmony and Space: A Jazz and Contemporary Piano Recital
1 Broadside. 48"W x 36"HA typical musical performance is a multifaceted combination of planning, coordination, and artistic performance. Over the span of 6 months, 6 incredibly talented musicians and I were able to rehearse and perform multiple renditions of a recital of my own arrangement: Harmony and Space. Composed of arrangements for a classic jazz sextet, as well as interpretive composition for solo piano, the recital set out to investigate the unifying role of harmony and space in the composition of music, and lifestyle.Kalamazoo College. My Internship Experience
5 p.In this SIP reflection, I will be retracing my experience in a 3-month internship at Amazon. This was my first internship and the experience I gained from this internship was exactly what I needed to start my career and gain some first-hand experience into the life of someone in my chosen career (software development)
The Characterization of Spinosad’s Mode of Action
iii, 16p.Insecticide development has been forced to evolve as a field due to the development of insecticidal resistance found in pests. This includes the development of characterization methods for the binding site of newly developed insecticides, to ensure that the chemical is not binding to a site that has already developed a resistance mutation. A good amount of the most common insecticides, like neonicotinoids, bind to a ligand gated ion channel called the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, or the nAchR, and cause neurological symptoms in insects. Spinosyns are a newer insecticide that was found to be a specific agonist on the nAchR, however, characterizing its mode of action proved to be difficult. The hope was that spinosyns like Spinosad could be used as a more specific and environmentally safe pesticide that would help combat the resistance developing to popular neonics, however, the race to characterize Spinosad’s mode of action required the development of several new testing methods, most importantly a viable method for in vivo testing in the alpha 6 subunit of the nAchR which also proved to be the most difficult. This meant that the mode of action was confirmed well after pest populations had already developed resistance. Despite this, the new methods that were developed will be able to characterize newly developed insecticides before resistance development

Meeting in the Middle: Using Abbas Khider’s book Deutsch für Alle (German for Everyone) as a lens into the accessibility of the German language
36 p.The author discusses the ideas of Iraqi-German author Abbas Khider and his book Deutsch für Alle (German for Everyone). He writes “German for Everyone examines the accessibility of the German language and designs a new, easier-to-learn version of the German language. It treats the language like something that can be changed. The question of the function and accessibility of language has been of great interest to me because of my experiences as a German learner playing soccer. I tried to imagine Khider's new version of the German language in reality. How it would be to use Khider’s 'Neudeutsch' with my football teammates? For us, language was primarily a means of communication. This meant that we often incorrectly declined words, vocabulary from our mother tongues became confused. But we didn't care as long as we could understand each other, to work as a team. Sometimes the German players commented on how funny we sounded. It was like having our own version of the German language. Abbas Khider eliminates (or simplifies) many of the concepts that we as a team found difficult and I have therefore decided to continue this concept.
