Synthesis and Characterization of Bis-hydrazinylpyridine Based Heterobimetallic Catalysts for the Deoxydehydration of Polyols
No full textix, 68p.One challenge facing industrial chemists is the acquisition of chemical feedstocks such as alkenes from non-petroleum sources to increase sustainability of industrial processes. Deoxydehydration reactions can convert polyols into alkenes, which would allow conversion of biomass into usable chemical feedstocks for modern industry. However, one problem with current deoxydehydration mechanisms is the necessary sacrificial redox agents that greatly increase the cost of this process. The aim of this research is to synthesize and characterize a series of heterobimetallic catalysts capable of both facile activation of hydrogen as the terminal redox agent, as well as perform deoxydehydration catalysis. The monometallic complexes of modified bishydrazinylpyridine ligands with NiII, PtII, PdII, and MoVI were successfully synthesized and characterized. Additional work is in progress to synthesize complexes with IrI, RhI, and RuII, though further purification is necessary to isolate pure material. The synthesized monometallic complexes will provide groundwork for development of the targeted family of heterobimetallic catalysts

Environmental Stewardship in Michigan : Trials and Tribulations of the Fight to Protect our State’s Natural Features
No full textvii, 39 p.My Senior Integrated project centers around environmentalism in both Kalamazoo and Michigan as a whole. I conducted some interviews, but also scoured the archives of Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College and the Kalamazoo Public Library to gather information. I wrote three pieces of writing. One is about historic preservation in Kalamazoo and how it factors into establishing a sustainable culture. To write this I interviewed Kalamazoo’s Historic Preservation Coordinator Luis Pena. I also wrote a longer article using archival research and an interview with Kalamazoo River Watershed Council Director Doug Mclaughlin. This article is about the long history of pollution in the Kalamazoo River, and what has been done to remedy this continuing issue. Finally, I wrote an article about the difference between Indigenous attitudes toward nature and settler attitudes, using the Potawatomi re-meandering project of the Dowagiac River
Computational Exploration of Peptoids with Amino Ethyl Side Chains : Unveiling Trans-Cis and Trans-Trans Conformational Preferences
No full textv, 34p.This study explores peptoids of the amino ethyl side chains to further understand conformational preference between trans-cis and trans using computational methods. Using quantum mechanics-based calculations, molecular dynamic simulations, python-based scripts, and VR, 500 conformers of each peptoid were generated and optimized. The generation was done through RDKit while the optimizations of the peptoids was handled through Hartree-Fock method and ωB97x-d functional by selecting the 105 lowest conformers for HF and within a 5 kcal/mol range for the ωB97x-d functional. NMR simulations provided a deeper understanding when paired with frequency calculations. Overall, these computational methods gave insight into hydrogen bonding interactions, relative energy, and the isomerization of these peptoids. The study draws relations with side chains such as Nbn at the termini resulting in peptoids exhibiting a trans-cis isomerization, on the other hand peptoids with Nae at the N terminus, Nsna, and N(pCl)bn resulted in a preference for a trans-trans isomerization. This work lays the groundwork for future investigations by highlighting the necessity for more powerful computers and sophisticated computational methods in order to completely capture the complex dynamics of peptoid conformations. The results offer a computational framework for comprehending and forecasting the behavior of peptoid-based medications and materials in a variety of scientific domains, which has important ramifications for the sensible design of such products

For this project, I focused on physical wellness and emotional wellness, which I believe are directly tied to other dimensions on a college campus like social, intellectual, and environmental. This SIP includes three articles: “Services: Nutritious or Disappointing?” ; “Counseling Center Aids Students in Mental Health” ; and “Physical Education Requirement Aids Students in Maintaining Physical Fitness.
A City Divided : Zoning Detroit in the First Half of the 20th Century
No full text78 p.When looking at the evolution of American cities, one thing is clear: the expansion of cities, both upward and outward, has often led to cramped and dirty environments. Cities minimally regulated construction and land usage, allowing for haphazard street layouts and industrial sites adjacent to neighborhoods.2 This was an all too common phenomenon, one that particularly influenced the industrializing city of Detroit, located along the ( aptly named) Detroit River across from the Canadian city of Windsor. Its expansion in the late nineteenth century brought the city large amounts of wealth and influence, but called into question the freedom of development many businessmen and other landowners enjoyed. The consequences of limited restrictions would see the beginning of urban reforms, emerging in Detroit politics and its city government as reformers gained influence over the city's future. By the turn of the twentieth century, Detroit's growth necessitated additional regulations to manage the city's expansion. Desiring increased order over chaotic development taking place, Detroiters sought the implementation of municipal ordinances to reinforce a degree of control, that had already started decades earlier. When these ordinances were not enough, zoning laws were proposed to give the municipal government more power in deciding the direction of the city's layout and function. Business interests prevented the implementation of zoning when it was introduced in the early 1920s, but by 1940 zoning was finally approved, partially as a measure to prevent expanding blight. Thanks to racially restrictive housing in the city, population growth necessitated the expansion of African American neighborhoods, moving to populate the inner city as white residents moved towards the suburbs. The l 950s and 60s saw the beginnings of the city's economic decline, which brought attempts to rehabilitate dilapidated housing and industry, mainly through restoration and incentivizing projects that required large substantial rezoning. African American housing and the auto industry were major development focuses, with the former moving into some of Detroit's only affordable housing and the latter with grand plans to transform derelict areas into functioning industrial parks. While only a fraction of the city's revitalization efforts succeeded, zoning's involvement is a testament to its usage in Detroit's aims at controlling its destiny

Clinic Escorting and the Role of Patient Advocacy at Planned Parenthood
No full textv, 13 p.Patient advocacy can be seen throughout clinical and independent organizations that is usually fulfilled by a set position. This advocacy can look different than a set individual or job position supporting a patient. Advocacy starts before a patient walks into a clinic or a healthcare space. Clinic escorts at Planned Parenthood serve as the first set of advocates to provide support for the patients, welcome the public, answer questions, address concern, and protect the patients from outside threats brought by protesters outside the building. This project aims to investigate the role of patient advocacy and view how it translates to other professions related and unrelated to patient advocacy. This experience has taught me how to be resilient, speak up for others, and to not let the harshness of the environment impact you personally. The experience shows that advocacy can range from stepping up for patients and guiding them to simply providing a positive presence to the space. The experiences and thoughts learned throughout volunteering allowed me to see that clinic escorting relates to the same concepts I am currently learning in my courses at Kalamazoo College and also those I have learned in the past. Clinic escorting deals with inequality, solidarity, and learning how to be an ethical individual to yourself and others. In addition, it has shown that time management, communication, and commitment are all strengths needed to function as an adequate advocate and support system. The following shows my learning experiences and how these skills were strengthened during the project
