Thyme for Jamón? Thyme and clove essential oils as antimicrobials for the management of Streptococcus suis in Spanish swine production
No full textii, 19p.Antibiotic overuse in swine production is well documented to contribute to the development of multidrug resistance in bacteria. Thyme and clove essential oils as well as their main constituents thymol, carvacrol and eugenol present promising alternatives for management of the major swine pathogen Streptococcus suis in Spanish in pigs. Analysis of the in vivo effects of thyme and clove essential oils indicate strong antimicrobial activity against S. suis, although significant challenges are associated with essential oil research and dosage development. Evidence for the in vivo effectiveness of clove and thyme essential oils is yet limited, but there is potential that further research in the field could lead to practical and effective suggestions for in-feed oil usage. Overall, this review concludes that despite the present lack of studies, the potential for thyme and clove essential oils to be effective means of S. suis control in Spanish swine is high and should be explored further
“What’s the choice? You have no choice”: Charter Schools Marketing Better Education by Selling Discipline and Choice and Its Effects on Public Education
No full text1 broadside. 48"W x 36"HCharter schools have been a booming industry in recent years, especially in the city of Chicago, where there are advertisements marketed all around the city from the public trains and buses to billboards on the highway. Charter schools have also been a part of bigger conversations that deal with education reform and the debate if public schools are good for children or are public schools harming them. These conversations have become very prevalent in the media so much so that the ABC sitcom, Abbott Elementary, tackled the charter school conversation by showing an exaggerated scene of charter schools publicly shaming public schools in their advertisements.
Although charter schools seem to be harmless, there are issues that charter schools hide behind the discipline, as they use discipline as a way to “straighten children up” in order for them to be prepared for college and society. Discipline becomes an issue when there is a constant backlash on the harsh punishment given to students over small issues, like tardiness. Charter schools also are key when looking into the privatization of education. Who deserves a good education and why are public schools not worthy of the title of “good” education? Charter schools using their tools to market brings in more enrollment, leading to less enrollment and negative light shined on public schools. It leads to many children who depend on their neighborhood public schools not receiving the education they deserve because of the lack of funding, or the closing of their schools.Kalamazoo College. American Frontiers : Facing the “better future”

This job was a fruitful and valuable experience since as an immigrant myself, I understand the struggles incoming immigrants might face when arriving in the United States. This opportunity advanced my development as a professional, but most importantly, as a human being. During this job, I was able to create meaningful connections with immigrants and refugees; their stories were fascinating yet heartbreaking. Creating these connections helped me better understand myself, the world around me, and the society we currently live in

No full textix, 31 p.I initially hoped to use more forms, like in Blood Dazzler, but I found that approaching my poems with a form in mind was overly restrictive. I have written formal poems, including some for other classes at Kalamazoo College, but I found that it was much easier to write in a specific structure when I had an idea in mind first and decided that a structure would emphasize its meaning— writing a poem by choosing a form first and attempting to write something around the structure usually resulted in uninspired and forced poems, and was a very frustrating process. One of my poems, “The Type of Crazy No One Warns You About,” started as an attempt to write a villanelle. I liked the idea of the repeated phrases at the end of each stanza acting as a kind of reassurance from the speaker to the addressee contrasting with the rest of the message, and my initial hope was that it would build from reassuring to desperate and almost frantic, showing that the speaker is not as confident as they try to present themself. One thing I struggled with during the poem was finding a way to progress the emotions in the traditional villanelle structure. I had a hard time escalating the poem when I stuck strictly to the format. In retrospect, I wish I had written a different poem in this structure. “The Type of Crazy” was supposed to have a shift in tone which I only managed to accomplish when I removed the stanzas that were only there to fit the line limits, and added ones that broke the format. I think “Ensomnia” could have worked really well as a villanelle or in another structure focused on repetition, as the feeling of going through the motions of daily life when sleep deprived can feel very repetitive. I liked the original idea of “Ensomnia” a lot, but I think it fell apart in execution as I ran out of places to take it. Even after the SIP, I will probably try rewriting some of the poems in different formats to see how they work

Neuroprotective Effects of 5-Hydroxy-2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone on Glutamate Excitotoxicity Model of Caenorhabditis elegans
No full textvii, 33 p.Neurodegenerative diseases occur when neurons in the central nervous system deteriorate over time, causing loss of function. One pathway for neuronal death is glutamate excitotoxicity. The main focus of this study is to find alternative ways to limit neuronal death due to glutamate excitotoxicity. Previous studies have shown that 5-Hydroxy-2-(2- phenylethyl)chromone (5-HPEC) has neuroprotective effects against glutamate excitotoxicity in rat cortical cells. 5-HPEC is a modulator of serotonin receptor, 2B (5- HT2B), and has shown to reduce neuronal death in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) in previous studies. This work looks at using 5-HPEC to target glutamate excitotoxicity in vivo in C. elegans, to see if it is a viable therapeutic for neurodegenerative diseases. Upon drug treatment of 5-HPEC (58.67 mM) in the excitotoxicity model of C. elegans, a 52.3% decrease in the number of necrotic neurons was observed. In an effort to increase bioavailability of 5-HPEC within animals, a second strain of C. elegans with a thinner cuticle membrane was investigated and decreased the number of necrotic neurons by 63.6%. While the decrease in the number of necrotic neurons between these two strains was statistically significant, the percentages of decreased necrotic neurons in both strains analyzed were similar, indicating this approach for increasing bioavailability was not significant. Additionally, there was no significant difference upon analysis of the lifespan of untreated and 1% acetone treated animals, or in the track length and speed of drug treated animals
