My Reflection on Being a Remote Software Development for Non-Profit Organizations : Legal Accountability Project and Pangolino
17 p.In the spring and summer of this year (2024), I had the opportunity to work remotely with two organizations as a software developer: one with Pangolino, a global network dedicated to pangolin conservation, and the other with the Legal Accountability Project (LAP), which aims to improve the clerkship experience for law clerks. For LAP, I worked from March 1 to June 1 under an expedited hire, and for Pangolino from June 10 to August 30. Both roles presented similar and unique challenges as I grew as a problem solver and, specifically, as a software developer. I had the privilege of learning modern technologies such as TypeScript (a superset of JavaScript), Next.js (a React framework), and modern databases as a service, such as Firebase and Supabase
Enhancing Demographic Understanding of the Survivorship and Threats to Circium pitcheri Seedlings
iv, 13 p.The federally threatened Cirsium pitcheri (Torr. ex Eaton) plays a critical role as a keystone species in the dune ecosystems of the Great Lakes, supporting both dune formation and pollinator networks. The seedling stage has been named as the most vulnerable in its life cycle, however much of the existing research relies on demographic annual censuses and greenhouse experiments, offering limited insights into the environmental factors influencing seedling survivorship and growth in natural settings. This literature review explores how seedling conditions, such as temperature, dune aspect, and neighbor interactions, affect seedling success and how these early influences may shape the long-term life trajectory of C. pitcheri. I explore what experiments have been done with C. pitcheri seedlings and propose how that knowledge can be applied to future demographic research involving seedlings. Understanding these factors is vital for informing conservation strategies and enhancing population resilience
Plant-Based Meat Alternatives as an Application for Anti-Microbial Protection
v, 16 p.Food spoilage involves the growth of bacteria that leads to food contamination and waste. In order to prolong shelf-life, antimicrobials are being used in food product, but the common synthetic antimicrobials have caused a push for a natural alternative. Clean label refers to a consumer push for easier to read food labels that contain more natural ingredients and less artificial dyes and additives. Consumers want to comprehend what they are putting into their body and avoid synthetics due to the potential effect it has on ones health. Two clean label cultured dextrose-based antimicrobials by the name of, NP 1% and NP5 1%, were compared for their efficiency in prohibiting bacterial growth. This was conducted through the plating of plant-based meat patties onto different agar plates and incubated to facilitate the grow of microbes. NP 1% was found to be more efficient than the competitor product, NP 5%, in preventing total bacterial growth
Design and Synthesis of Maleimide-2-Indolinone Hybrids as Potential Antibacterial Agents
vii, 25 p.Antibacterial resistance continues to grow as an issue to public health through the misuse and inappropriate prescription of antibiotics. Many attempts have been made by researchers to help curb this issue. Particular interest lies in developing novel antibiotics that possess multiple mechanisms of attack against bacteria. Previous work in the Williams Lab has seen success in the hybridization of previously existing antibacterial agents, specifically tryptamine and maleimide derivatives. It has been determined that increased antibacterial activity is seen in these hybrid molecules when tryptamine is oxidized. This work built off predetermined successes in the Williams lab, focusing on the synthesis of maleimide-2-indolinone hybrid molecules as potential antibacterial agents. These scaffolds were synthesized and purified in varying yields (19%-81%)
Bridging Gaps : A Coding Workshop for Empowering POC Students
v, 10 p.This project focused on empowering young people of color in a low-income area through a coding workshop that introduced them to computer science. The primary objective was to inspire students and provide exposure to coding and technology as potential pathways to success. Partnering with Girls Who Code, I worked towards developing a workshop centered on game development using Scratch, aiming to make the material both accessible and engaging. Despite meticulous preparation, administrative challenges led to delays, which required me to reschedule the workshop from summer to the winter term. These obstacles highlighted the importance of adaptability, clear communication, and persistence when navigating logistical processes. Although the workshop did not proceed as initially planned, the experience provided valuable insights into project management, problem-solving, and advocacy, reinforcing my commitment to creating opportunities for underrepresented students in STEM. This project aligns with my long-term vision of using technical skills to drive social impact, emphasizing that meaningful contributions can arise from both small and large-scale initiatives
Assessing the effects of KRAS and nuclear export inhibitors on human and murine pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells in vitro
iv, 22 p.Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common type of pancreatic cancer, yet it is generally diagnosed late because of its quick metastasis throughout the body.1 As a result, few treatments have been found to reduce the spread of this disease. Prior research in the field of oncology found that the KRAS isoform of the RAS GTPase proteins appears to be the most frequently mutated oncogene in PDAC.2 Recently, it has been proposed that targeting the nuclear exporter protein, exportin 1 (XPO1), in combination with KRAS inhibitors may suppress tumor growth and prevent drug resistance. IC50 and synergy experiments were run on several human and mouse cell lines, including MiaPaCa-2, 6694c2, KPC313, HPAF-II, and Panc-1 cells to assess the effects of using KRAS and nuclear export inhibitors in combination on PDAC. Three drugs were used, including two KRAS inhibitors, Adagrasib (MRTX849) and MRTX1133, and an export protein inhibitor, Eltanexor (KPT8602). Through these preclinical assessments, Eltanexor is shown to enhance the anticancer activity of both Adagrasib and MRTX1133 therapeutics in vitro
A Place on the Corner : A Socio-Ecological Exploration of Urban Green Third Places
iv, 35 p.In a time marked by pandemic years and the overwhelming pace of advancing technology, many are left searching for ways to build real and meaningful connections with the world around them. The places those connections are most fruitful are on the balance point between our private and public lives – in spaces known as “third places,” or the gathering places found outside of our homes and work. Urban green third places are especially adept at cultivating that connectivity, thanks to the socio-ecological benefits of easy access to nature and biodiversity. Serving as neighborhood nodes, urban green third places such as community gardens hold the power not only to create a more diverse and sustainable environment, but to build relationships between local residents, their neighbors and neighborhoods, and the very land they live on. As the world faces issues of anthropogenic climate change, the recognition, creation, and protection of green third places in urban communities becomes an invaluable tool. Urban green third places transform perception of “just another place on the corner” into so much more: a model for sustainable development, a key factor of ecological resilience, and a place of belonging for all who visit
Online Skills-Building Experience Through EdX
ii, 8 p.For my choice, in regard to the Senior Integrated Project, I chose to complete two online courses through the website called EdX, which totaled up to 50 hours. The first course I completed was titled “Introduction to Marketing,” and the second was titled “Digital Marketing Strategy.” These courses were from The University of British Colombia and The University of Edinburgh. EdX emphasizes the importance of accessibility, meaning, for the most part, these courses were self-paced. Both courses were set up fairly similarly, throughout each week, there would be lesson plans that included videos and short readings. After the lessons, there were short assessments or assignments that were completed for grades. At the end of both courses, there were final exams of 20 questions each, and there was a minimum percentage that needed to be reached to be considered for a certificate. The choice surrounding these courses was simple: marketing will never lose its hold on the business world, especially digital marketing. In the modern age, everything digital is only going to evolve into something more, making digital marketing a necessity when it comes to succeeding in business. Marketing, as a broader term, will always be important as well. Gaining the knowledge surrounding marketing will only improve my abilities in the future as a woman in the world of business
