Actual use of urban parks during the COVID-19 pandemic : A case study in Aichi Prefecture
The COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered lifestyles in Japan, with restrictions leading to increased time spent at home and decreased outdoor activity. Consequently, people increasingly complained of mental health problems and a lack of exercise. This research examines the impact of the pandemic on the use of urban parks, comparing usage before and after the outbreak. It explores the characteristics of parks that are more accessible and discusses the facilities and locations that contribute to ease of use. Analysis of park location characteristics indicates a preference for parks with ample space, particularly those situated in less densely populated residential areas. Additionally, analysis of park facilities reveals a preference among users for outdoor recreational amenities where interaction with residents is possible while minimizing the risk of infection. Walking and running courses near scenic areas were particularly sought after. The study highlights the significant role of outdoor facilities in influencing park visitation patterns, indicating a shift in behavior driven by the pandemic
