Needle and Thread: An Activity for Examining Various Management Behaviors
The Needle and Thread activity serves several purposes and can be designed to meet a variety of objectives. The activity not only incorporates individual dynamics, communication and interpersonal relationships, but also addresses various management and organization issues such as interdependence, influence and delegation. Relatively little time and few resources are needed for an experience where participants have the opportunity to reflect on their own behavior, the behavior of others, and the impact these observations have on managerial responsibilities. This article explains the Needle and Thread activity and then discusses various elements of what personal, interpersonal and organizational dynamics can be examined
A Customized Excel Data Analysis System for Use in Undergraduate Marketing Research
This paper describes the difficulties marketing research that instructors encounter when using statistical software packages. One of the difficulties in teaching arises from the nature of the statistical software packages available. Specifically, standard output in these packages generates many values by default. Students must learn “where to find” the values important for their particular analysis. Also, there are many options which may be selected to run a single procedure, and these are confusing to students. A third problem lies in using the output tables in word processing software. This paper presents a new type of data analysis software, XL Data Analyst, which overcomes these problems. The XL Data Analyst’s features and output are compared with SPSS
The Integration of Appreciative Inquiry and Experiential Learning for Peak Performance Appreciative Inquiry Case Story: New York City Leadership Challenge
This paper illustrates how an integrated Appreciative Inquiry, AI, and Experiential Learning, EL, approach within a micro-world learning environment accelerates positive change, motivates teams and individuals, generates buy-in and engages people at all levels. By sharing and learning from experience, people attain the high levels of rapport, empathy, trust and mutual understanding necessary to risk and embrace change together. When integrated into each stage of an Appreciative Inquiry, Experiential Learning supports and illuminates the AI process, making AI "come alive" for all stakeholders. When designed into an AI process, experiential learning allows participants to actually experience "the best of what exist" (Discovery), creates opportunities for organizational "peak experiences" (Dream), provides opportunities to experience, practice and refine provocative propositions (Design), and builds critical mass as change is cascaded throughout the community (Destiny)
Individual Achievement versus Team Performance: An Empirical Study with Business Games
Undergraduate students (160) were ranked according to their performance in three objective tests (two multiple-choice quizzes and one objective exam) and then grouped in teams of 5 to 6. During seven weeks the teams managed companies in a medium complexity business game (MMG). One would expect that better performance in the objective tests (individual knowledge acquisition) would produce better performance in the business game (knowledge deployment in teamwork). The results however did not indicate any consistent and significant correlation between level of individual knowledge and company performance. This shows that theoretical knowledge is not sufficient to explain teamwork successful performance
Some Strategists Don\u27t Learn or Can\u27t Learn
This study continues the examination of strategy learning in THE BUSINESS STRATEGY GAME. Findings in the first study -- with an earlier version of this simulation -- indicate that the learning of and attention to strategy ratings led to superior and large performance differences between winning, first place teams, and losing, last place teams. A second study -- using a greatly expanded version of the simulation -- led to the same results. The study reported in this paper shows that the same results are obtained even when competing teams are reminded of the strategy rating importance and the relevant simulation manual pages before both practice decisions and all subsequent real decisions
Assessing Individual Performance in a Total Enterprise Simulation
Although empirical studies have demonstrated there is no positive correlation between simulation performance and learning, in almost all business simulation exercises such indicator is used to evaluate participants. Considering that in real-world individual are usually evaluated by performance, and rarely by learning, it is justifiable to continue using simulation performance as an assessment indicator. Therefore, this paper extends existing literature presenting a methodology to assess individual performance in a total enterprise simulation course. Findings of first applications using such methodology are reported. Advantages of the devised methodology are also discussed
The Influence of Variables Easily Controlled by the Instructor/Administrator on Simulation Outcomes: In Particular, the Variable, Reflection.
This paper deals with two related topics. The first is the influence of variables under the control of the teacher/administrator on simulation outcomes. It contends that many teacher-controlled variables have considerable influence in simulations and this influence should be further studied. The second topic is reflection, which is part of the learning process. This paper explores this important aspect of learning, divides the reflection process into four sub-processes, argues that teacher/administrators can influence how and how much students reflect on their simulation experience, and explores the potential for undertaking research on the relationship between reflection and simulation outcomes
Can Handicapped Students Access Your Class Web Site?
While most ABSEL members have developed web sites for the classes that they teach, many may not be aware that recent legislation regarding access for the handicapped require that these sites be accessible to all. This paper provides a brief review of the laws pertaining to making web sites available to the handicapped. It also reviews guidelines made by two organizations regarding how to implement the law. Finally, the paper examines how major software developers are addressing these issues and reviews various Internet sites that ABSEL members can turn to for further information and free testing of existing materials
Strategic Management: An Evaluation of the Use of Three Learning Methods in Hong Kong
The paper examines the use of three learning methods in the teaching of a strategic management course for a Masters programme in Postgraduate Scheme in Business and Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The three methods are an in-company consultancy project; a new business venture simulation; and the case method. The results of a survey of postgraduate students\u27 perceptions show that overall the new business venture simulation provides a more successful learning experience than in-company consultancy project and the case method
Changing Perceptions of the Importance of Leadership: The Contribution of Individual Spirit Harmonics in Leadership
Individual Spirit Harmonics are those consonant and dissonant values that contribute both to harmony and disharmony in a given management situation. By classifying these values associated with these harmonics into Affective, Cognitive and Behavioral aspects that are associated with experiential learning, we can, through pre and post-testing determine if an increased awareness and hence learning has occurred. Moreover, we can also gauge if what we have attempted the students to learn, was actually what they were supposed to learn due to changes in their perceptions of these values
