    Teaching Math More Effectively and Efficiently

    The United States is struggling with teaching mathematics in school. Students don’t see the connection between math and the real world. Students are viewing math as a rigid set of rules instead of as a creative and exciting subject to explore. A few of the problems that are in traditional classrooms are: students having a fear of being publicly embarrassed, students memorizing methods instead of truly understanding the math , math problems not being relevant to students, and students not being engaged during class. A few methods and teaching strategies that can help solve these problems include: Gradual Release, Open Middle problems, and the 5 Practices of Discussion. By applying these strategies and tools to everyday math classrooms, math can become the intriguing and creative subject that it is meant to be

    OK Bracket Manager

    The OK Bracket Manager is a web application designed to help streamline tournament event running, specifically for events with numerous brackets. The main goal of the system is to provide a consolidation of brackets from Challonge (and potentially other sites in the future) to minimize navigating page to page to check each bracket by itself, along with tracking competitor status across all of an events brackets, so that a competitor won\u27t get called for when they\u27re already somewhere else. This consolidation is accomplished by sending requests through Challonge’s API, meaning that changes on our site are also represented on the organizer’s Challonge tournament listings, meaning that details can still be checked and managed from a familiar space even if they want to use our service at times. This also means that other programs that are compatible with Challonge, for example data aggregation from tournaments to rank players, are implicitly compatible with the OK Bracket Manager. Further, the applications listing and search features allow tournament events to be found by visitors without logging in. This can help competitors locate events, and can also allow them to check up on the status of tournament details from our pages, such as the bracket progression, and standings. This helps competitors engage with the event and track math wins as they happen

    Rooted in Reflection: Developing My Professional Identity During My First Year as an Interpreter

    This study focuses on my journey of professional identity development starting out in the field. Over the course of my first year of practice, I collected reflective data about my teamed interpreting experiences, and reflected about my process through regular meetings with a seasoned interpreter functioning as a coach, supervision sessions with colleagues and mentors, and written assignments focused on personal reflection and developing a strong sense of professional identity. The analysis focuses on the evolution of my professional identity and my ability to establish and navigate boundaries in interpersonal relationships with team interpreters. This study is intended to be an asset to new interpreters seeking to establish their professional identities as they begin working in the field of interpretation. Ultimately, in this study, I found that strong relationships exist between a new interpreter’s decision-making self-efficacy in interpreting scenarios and the perceived openness of a team interpreter; I also found that intentional engagement in reflective practices is positively correlated with an increased sense of confidence and a stronger sense of professional identity

    Interpreting and Dyslexia, How to Cope

    This action research project is about how Dyslexia influences the physical and cognitive aspects of the interpreting process. Dyslexia is a spectrum and does not influence everyone to the same degree. Therefore, this study will be limited to testing several strategies provided by a variety of interpreters on only one participant, myself, who has Dyslexia. I applied a variety of coping strategies for different cognitive and physical aspects of Dyslexia to my interpreting work. Next, I found a common theme between interpreters that have Dyslexia. Once I figured out a common theme, I picked a few strategies to test and compared the accuracy from the original interpretation to the accuracy once the strategy was implemented

    A Dance of Life and Death: How cancer works and why it makes a great source of choreographic inspiration

    Cancer is a problem that has plagued humans our entire existence, and with that, has come the quest for a cure. Over many years of research we have discovered that the cure wasn’t easy to find and that cancer was a far more complicated disease than originally expected. Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, that begins with genetic mutations. With advances in science we came to understand our genetics and then we found some potential causes for cancer, in our genes. It is hoped that if we can reverse the faulty genetic mutations that cause cancer, we may be able to cure it. The mutations occur in two groups of genes, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, and the latter is the focus of this paper. Tumor suppressor genes stop the cell cycle and can cause the cell to go into apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death. As the name suggests, these genes help prevent tumors and cancer from forming. When mutated they lose their function and thus their ability to prevent tumors, which can help give rise to cancers. Without active tumor suppressor genes, cells can grow out of control, which can lead to more mutations being gained and a tumor being formed. The genes I looked at are TP53, INK4, and PTEN-they have been chosen as they represent the range of functions tumor suppressor genes have and have been seen in cancers across the body. I looked at where the mutations are 5 occurring within the genes and examined potential differences between reproductive and nonreproductive organ-based cancers. Through the data I collected and the results of my analysis, I planned to create a dance to be performed in the Spring Dance Concert in 2020. This dance will be inspired by American and German theatrical Modern dance and will be an abstract representation of how tumor suppressors work and how they act when mutated. For my thesis, I blended art and science through the analysis of data and the creation of a dance. I explored how cancers and patients are affected by tumor suppressor genes in reproductive organ-based versus non-reproductive organ-based cancers. The reason behind this comparison lies in the difference in how the different organ system’s cells grow in terms of rate. It is hoped that a difference will be found and that may help understanding how cancer works. And then that can be explored through a dance and shared

    Application of the Dynamic Systems Theory to the Elder Population

    For this project, the Dynamic Systems theory (DST) of motor performance was applied specifically to the elder population, and set of exercise plans for walking and finger utensil usage were researched and manipulated. The most common individual, environmental, and task constraints seen in elders were designed to create a recommended set of movement plans to help maintain motor performance for each skill. With the average age constantly increasing in the United States, more people are living longer, meaning that people must be able to maintain their motor performance for longer periods of time, to ensure continued mobility. The set of movement plans was separated into three categories based on the individual, environmental, and task constraints seen in the majority of situations. There are recommendations of how each constraint can be manipulated, so the constraints that apply most to an individual can be used to produce the most efficient movement. This can be beneficial for many elderly people because it can act as their personal mobility plan to improve and enhance motor performance. It can also help benefit younger people as it can be used as a proactive way to transition into a new stage of life. It is hoped that creating these movement plans will give elders more options to enhance their motor performance to maintain mobility. Additionally, by basing the movement plans on the DST, awareness can be raised about its effectiveness, so that more people can understand and apply it to various aspects of their lives
