Assessment of groundwater contamination from land use/cover change in rural-urban fringe of National Capital Territory of Delhi (India)

This study examines the relationship between groundwater depletion/pollution and land-use/cover change in rural-urban fringe of Delhi, where agro-ecosystems and populations are dependent on access to reliable groundwater supplies. Results indicate a significant relationship between high proportionate decrease in groundwater and land being removed from irrigation. The higher values of most of the parameters were found in the agricultural field and industrial area. The study results suggest that most of the elements exceeding the general acceptable limit. This indicates the land-use/cover change from agriculture to industrial and residential area and also the impact of excess use of chemical fertilizer/pesticides in agricultural land

L’evolution territoriale de la ville de Barlad

The territorial evolution of Bârlad town. This article proposes an analysis for the territorial evolution of Bârlad town, since his early foundation until present, considering the natural conditions, the political, historical, economical and demographical factors. Its first establishment as a bourg (“targ”) needs to be linked to the rural settlement of Prodana, while its following territorial evolution is subordinated to the influence of different factors such as: its geographical position on the commercial roads, the climatic favorability, agricultural soils productivity and fertility rates. The most profound transformations of its image as a town are registered between 1944 - 1977, being conditioned by the political factor, the industrialization process and the demographic increment linked mainly to the rural emigration. After 1989, the extension of its urban limits was slackened by administrative factors, especially by the retrenchment of its administrative territory, which determined a systematization of its further and present territorial expansion

IDENTIFICATION OF METROPOLITAN CORE USING GEO-SPATIAL DATA FOR KOLKATA, INDIA

    Get PDF
Metropolitan centers usually do not reveal iso-diametric spatial configurations, as they have evolved with gradual non-homogeneous transformation of land. The spatio-temporal distribution of urban functions reveals centrality towards a particular area. The preferred centre usually identifies itself with accessibility and diversity in urban activities, which is usually synonymous with the urban core. Location of urban core is a product of both horizontal and vertical zonation of urban functions. Due to its complex and dynamic character, delineation of the urban core is a challenging subject of research. Effective and uniform techniques for delineating the core area of an urban center have been developed over time as, undeniably, it is of utmost importance to the urban planners, ecologists, architects, environmentalists, economists for the study of urban dynamics. This paper attempts to use geo-spatial data and use a composite of three important criteria for identification of the urban core, i.e., Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI), Mid-wave Infra-Red (MIR) & Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) band, DN variation analysis. Further, data for two different time periods have been used to show decadal changes in the direction and extent of the dynamic nature of the core(s) vis a vis the changes in the peripheral domains as well

    Get PDF
Located in 23014'N latitude and 870 51’ E longitudes, Barddhaman, the Class I town (since 1961) is the head-quarter of the Barddhaman district, West Bengal, India. In term of size of population, the town ranked 13th in the state. Being site and situational advantages, this agriculturally prosperous town since its inception has been recognised as the seat of settled civilization. Urban open spaces are important component to sustainable living in urban areas as they provide environmental, social and economic benefits. Barddhaman town has 122 open space sites comprising an area of 193 ha (8.59%): some are used as playground and rest are vacant as non-used assets. The present work intends to build a framework for rational use of open spaces for the sustenance of the town. For the present study 20 of such open spaces have been selected and comparatively analysed on the basis of standard score of two variables: distance from CBD (1) and areal extent (2) to find out their economic and environmental significance. Finally, a proposal has made for the uses of open spaces to make the town sustainable.Key words: Open space, town, CBD, standard score, environment, sustainable tow
