A Study on the Narrative of “Things” in Cement Garden

    Get PDF
“The Cement Garden” is a Gothic novel written by British author Ian McEwan. The narrative function of “objects” in the novel is often underestimated. This paper uses Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory and Jane Bennett’s Vital Objects as frameworks to focus on the performative capabilities of basements, cement, books, and diaries in “The Cement Garden”. It explores how objects deconstruct anthropocentric narratives through spatial discipline, sensory penetration, and textual intervention, and how they construct interactive relationships between humans and objects. The paper also reveals the mechanisms by which post-industrial British society alienates family ethics through the reverse dominance of objects over people in the context of the family ethics crisis in post-industrial Britain

Analysis of the Application of X-Y Management Theory in University Engineering Consulting Project Organizations

    Get PDF
This paper takes university-based engineering consulting project organizations as the research subject, identifying and summarizing their formation process and characteristics. Grounded in McGregor’s Management X-Y Theory, it identifies the organizational management needs of project personnel. Subsequently, based on the management needs of organizational members and integrating Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs with the application scenarios of X-Y Management Theory, applicable models for different organizational contexts are proposed. Particularly when facing university-based engineering consulting project organizations, it is necessary to make appropriate selections and adjustments to organizational management strategies. This avoids large-scale negative risks for projects and members arising from deviations in management strategies, leading to the better achievement of organizational and project objectives

Implications of Foreign Environmental Codification Paradigms for China’s Ecological Civilization Code Compilation

    Get PDF
Under the context of advancing ecological civilization, China’s codification of an eco-environmental code constitutes both a legal system upgrade and a manifestation of green governance values. This study examines the urgency of codifying China’s fragmented environmental legislation, addressing critical challenges such as regulatory gaps, normative inconsistencies, and legislative redundancies. Through comparative analysis of Swedish and French codification paradigms, the paper highlights codification’s systemic advantages in harmonizing environmental governance frameworks. A three-stage codification pathway is proposed: establishing value-oriented principles, defining moderate codification objectives with adaptable scope, and adopting a “general-special provisions” structure with logically sequenced chapters. The findings suggest a medium-scale codification model that integrates international experiences with China’s ecological modernization needs. This hybrid approach balances code stability with regulatory flexibility, accommodating evolving environmental challenges while providing systematic legal support for ecological civilization construction. The proposed framework addresses current legislative fragmentation through hierarchical integration while preserving necessary regulatory adaptability—a strategic response to the dynamic nature of environmental governance in developing jurisdictions

The Paradoxes of Suicide and its Treatment

    Get PDF
Suicide and its treatment present several paradoxes which are described and discussed. The main paradox, suicide as a caused illness vs. suicide as an action is elaborated upon and the consequences of conceptualizing suicide as a goal-directed action are outlined. The contextual action theory and the theory of goal-directed action are summarized and the view of suicide engaging this approach is presented. Finally, the suicide prevention program developed upon this theory is briefly summarized

A Critical Pragmatic Perspective on Identity Construction through Non-Verbal Evidentiality in Cyber Rumors

    Get PDF
In the era of wide use of social media , cyber rumors often construct false “chains of evidence” by strategically employing non-verbal symbols such as images, audio, and video, making them significantly more deceptive than text-only versions. Integrating Critical Pragmatics and Pragmatic Identity Theory, this study examines how cyber rumors strategically manipulate non-verbal evidential resources to co-construct fabricated “evidential chains” and corresponding “credible identities”. The research finds that cyber rumors extensively utilize multimodal resources, such as image modality to create an illusion of empirical evidence, format/layout symbols to appropriate institutional authority, video modality for spatio-temporal manipulation, and fabricated follower counts as quantitative “social proof”. These strategies falsely construct identities such as pseudo-authoritative institutions, pseudo-eyewitnesses, pseudo-victim advocates, pseudo-scientific experts, and pseudo-internal informants. Fundamentally, these identity constructions violate the maxims of Grice’s Cooperative Principle and subvert the identity appropriateness and sincerity conditions of speech acts. By creating an “illusion of empirical evidence” through multimodal synergy, they erode the public’s ability to judge the authenticity of symbols. This study is expected to expand the multimodal dimension of evidentiality theory, deepen the linguistic explanation of cyber rumor dissemination mechanisms, and provide novel analytical perspectives for rumor identification and governance

Upgrading Level of Industrial Structure and Resource Dependence

    Get PDF
How to lessen regional resource dependency by raising the level of industrial structure has emerged as the key concern for nations seeking sustainable development in the face of the dual pressures of resource constraints and the acceleration of global climate change. This analysis was conducted using panel data from 265 prefecture-level cities from 2006 to 2022. First, this paper uses the benchmark regression model to investigate how regional resource reliance is directly impacted by the degree of industrial structure upgrading. Second, the intermediate effect model is used to analyze the course and procedure of the upgrading level of industrial structure on resource reliance. The results show that the upgrading level of industrial structure has a significant positive direct effect on resource dependence, and the effect is characterized as "East > Central and Western regions". The upgrading level of industrial structure can indirectly restrain regional resource dependence by increasing the degree of government intervention and breaking the "resource curse". This paper provides some scientific basis and theoretical reference for the region to break the resource curse and realize the efficient use of resources

The Translation of Chinese Food Culture from the Perspective of Eco-Translatology

    Get PDF
As a core carrier of Chinese civilization, Chinese food culture bears profound historical accumulation and philosophical connotations, and its effective translation is a crucial pathway to advance the international spread of Chinese culture. However, the external translation of food culture currently faces multiple challenges, such as differences in linguistic structures, cultural image default, and cognitive background barriers, which urgently call for systematic theoretical support and practical guidance. This study adopts Eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen as its theoretical framework. By virtue of the core principle of "three-dimensional transformation" of this theory, it explores how translators achieve dynamic adaptation and selective transformation in the source language and target language ecological environments. The research selects Food in Chinese Culture edited by K.C. Chang as the analytical text. Through in-depth analysis of the translation difficulties and handling methods in this text, this study aims to expand the application of Eco-translatology in the specific field of cultural translation, and provide actionable reference pathways for the external translation practices of Chinese food culture, contributing to the more effective global dissemination of Chinese culture

    Get PDF
This study examined the relationship between parental involvement, parental strategies, and students’ academic performance among Grades 4, 5, and 6 pupils of Sta. Barbara Central School, Zamboanga City, during School Year 2025-2026. Using a descriptive–correlational research design, data were collected from 30 pupils and 30 parents through adapted validated questionnaires. Students’ academic performance was obtained from school records. Descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed. Results revealed very high levels of parental involvement and parental strategies and an outstanding level of students’ academic performance. Regression analysis showed that parental involvement and strategies significantly predicted academic performance, with home-based involvement and parental strategies emerging as the strongest predictors. Significant differences in parental involvement were found when grouped according to socioeconomic status and parental educational background, but not according to school support. The findings emphasize the crucial role of parents in supporting students’ academic success and underscore the need for strengthened home-school partnerships
