Digital Appalachian History Narrative
No full textSouthern Ohio is probably the last place a person would think that a miracle could happen. My life brought me from Minnesota to Appalachia with the most unexpected gift; hope. I was a prime candidate for becoming a statistic and my children destined to repeat the cycle. I share about my experience of being in the foster care system, adoption, and chemical dependency that held me firmly in its grasp for years before experiencing freedom in a most unexpected place. In an Appalachian Studies course I took in the fall of 2018, we explored the stereotypical narrative perpetuated through the narrowly focused lens of many including that of JD Vance. I got the opportunity to share how my story differs. Utilizing digitized photographic family history, and my memoir I lay out my response to a counter-narrative of Appalachia and the role it played in my ability to ultimately thrive
Black Vultures in Southern Ohio: Investigating the Distribution and Behaviors of Coragyps atratus
No full textBlack vultures (Coragyps atratus), once non-existent in Ohio, now occur in high abundance in various locations throughout Ohio. Black vultures have experienced northward range expansions in both the 1870s and 1950s, with another likely occurring at present. Due to these expansions, this species has been coming into contact more frequently with humans, which is problematic due to their pest-like behaviors, such as preying on newborn livestock. Despite this, much remains unknown about the species, including why these range expansions have occurred. Our research seeks to provide a better understanding by investigating the distribution and behaviors of C. atratus throughout southern Ohio. Distribution investigation includes weekly site visitations throughout five counties, iNaturalist data, and eBird data. Two large C. atratus flocks in Ross and Clermont counties have been selected for behavioral profiling, and each site is visited for one hour each week to determine abundance and for behavioral profiling analysis
Intervention Strategies for Letter Sound Recognition in a First Grade Setting
No full textLetter sound recognition is an important skill for young learners to comprehend and is also one of the first major steps in learning to read. This research project is focused on discovering research based strategies for letter sound recognition that can be used in a first grade intervention classroom setting. Other focuses for this research project include specific activities that I had found to be effective towards letter sound recognition as well as the use of active learning and a multi-sensory approach. My goal for this research project was to help struggling students build the foundation they need to become stronger readers

Evaluation of Student-led Occupational Therapy Programming for Adults in Substance Abuse Recovery: Mixed-Methods Analysis
No full textAn ongoing evaluation of a lifestyle redesign program created and led by Master of Occupational Therapy students for adults in inpatient substance abuse recovery. A mixed-methods approach was used to conduct an analysis of participant feedback forms and program developer/rehabilitation faculty member interviews. Information was collected and assessed to gain insight on perceptions of program effectiveness, student preparedness, and occupational therapy’s role in substance abuse recovery. Results found will educate future occupational therapy students in the preparation and implementation of this lifestyle redesign program, as well as, the importance of occupation in recovery

The Development of New Laboratory Experiments for Analytical Chemistry Utilizing Microwave Technology
No full textThe most time consuming steps in an analytical chemistry laboratory involve sample preparation and analyte drying. Sample preparation involves the extraction of an analyte typically using acid digestion and heat. Analyte drying usually involves using heat to bring sintered glass crucibles to constant mass before and after precipitate collection. In this research, gravimetric analyis and a conventional microwave oven were used to moniter the amount of time for each of these steps. The time in the digestion step was minimized by using perfluoroalkoxy alkane polymer (PFA) vessels which were ideal since they are microwavable, acid resistant, and able to withstand moderate pressures. Drying time was decreased by using a convential microwave oven instead of the typical drying oven which reduced the drying time from hours to minutes. This presentation will show the advantages of utilizing conventional microwave oven technology to increase the efficiency of the analyitical process
