Student Motivation in the COVID-19 Classroom
For many educators, keeping students motivated is one of the biggest challenges they face in the classroom. When students lose motivation, they are left feeling disengaged and uneducated. As current studies show, when COVID-19 found itself into the classroom, students became less motivated to learn and complete schoolwork. Students had to quickly become accustomed to learning virtually in a non-school environment. This study is conducted in a high school English classroom that is using a hybrid of in-person and online learning. The purpose of this research is to identify aspects of student motivation in a classroom that is using a hybrid learning system. This information will be measured by testing students before and after using motivational tools such as educational games, creativity, and student rapport
A comparison of Mammal Diversity among Microhabitats in Shawnee State Forest and an Investigation of Trap Efficacy for Small Mammal Capture
Knowledge of mammal abundance and distribution can provide useful information for management and conservation. As primary consumers and prey items, mammals play a crucial role in the regulation of plant communities and vertebrate and invertebrate populations. A survey of mammal richness and abundance within riparian microhabitats is being conducted in Shawnee State Forest, Portsmouth, Ohio. Specifically, our study seeks to document fauna, compare diversity among habitats, and investigate efficacy of trapping equipment. Twenty-one mechanical traps including Sherman (three sizes), Pitfall, and Trip-Traps, are set within each of five established transects once weekly. Traps are randomly baited with oats and brown sugar, wet or dry cat food and peanut butter, or tuna. Trapping will continue until May of 2021 for a total of 840 trap nights, after which statistical analyses will be used to determine if diversity, trap type, or bait preferences differed significantly between microhabitat, trap, and bait types, respectively
Taking a Closer Look at Student Participation in the Accelerated Reader Program
Reading is a skill that students will need for a lifetime. Many students are on distinct reading levels, therefore, differentiated instruction is needed. Accelerated Reader will provide students a zone of proximal develop level that will match their reading ability and track their progress. During the early middle school years, students are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. That is exactly what the Accelerated Reader Program encompasses; the reading is modified to each student’s reading level. The study examines participation within the Accelerated Reader Program. Quantitative data was collected from a monthly Star reading test, over a three month time period, to determine if reading has progressed or declined. Also, qualitative data will be collected from student surveys and observations to determine if students are motivated to read using the Accelerated Reader Program. The research is pertinent, because many schools implement the program in their district
Adapting a Commercially Available Glucose Assay for Use with Chick Embryos
Diabetes mellitus is a serious disease that affects 60 million women of reproductive age worldwide, a number that is expected to double by 2030. In pregnancy, the disease is associated with a nine-fold increase in birth defects, heightening concern about its rising prevalence. Previous research in our lab has identified birth defects in chick embryos within 48 hours of introduction to a diabetic environment. The goal of this project is to determine the glucose content of both control and glucose-treated embryos. To achieve this, we will adapt a commercially available enzymatic glucose oxidase assay originally designed for measurement of glucose in food and subsequently adapted for use in Drosophila, manure, and cell culture. In this project, fertilized chicken eggs were injected with known concentrations of glucose and embryos were collected following incubation. Serial dilutions of a glucose standard and embryo homogenates were assayed and absorbance measured to determine glucose content
Improving Reading Comprehension in 10th Grade IEP Students Through Implementing Reading Strategies
Many students struggle with reading comprehension, especially students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and learning disabilities. There are many reading comprehension strategies that can be used within the classroom that have the potential to help students comprehend texts. The strategies that the researcher implements in this study are: text-to-self, text-to-world, text-to-text, story mapping, and annotation. This study goes on to explore: the attitude of students with learning disabilities towards reading, implementation of various reading comprehension strategies, which strategies the students prefer, and the level of improvement that these students demonstrate after applying certain strategies. Qualitative data was collected via in person observation of the students. Additionally, quantitative data was collected via a pre-test, a post-test, and a survey taken by the students. Will implementing a variety of reading comprehension strategies in a tenth grade English Language Arts (ELA) classroom with learning disabilities increase their reading comprehension achievement
Community Partnering at Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio: Tree Trails for Education, Health, Recreation, and Tourism
Green spaces are an essential component in facilitating outdoor activities and active lifestyles, especially in urban areas. Greenlawn Cemetery is one of the oldest and largest public green spaces in Portsmouth, Ohio and acts as a natural arboretum. A complete census of woody plants was conducted in Greenlawn Cemetery in fall 2020. Data were compiled and organized to develop trails that are available for educational, health, recreational, and tourism purposes through a website: www.shawnee.edu/trees. In all, 576 trees and shrubs representing 76 species were physically tagged and geolocated in a database which contained species, tree health, and cultural, historical, and ecological significance. To date, two tree trails have been developed, with others planned or under construction
Sexual Health and Wellness for Women in Recovery from Substance Use Disorder
The aim of this Capstone project was to produce a sexual health and wellness program for women in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). Creation of the program includes an in-depth literature review and thorough needs assessment using key stake holders in the community of Southern Ohio. Through clinical practice, literature review, and needs assessment, two modules and six sections were developed. The two modules are physical and mental health aspects of sexual health. Module one is physical health and is composed of three sections that include practicing safe sex, postpartum care, and pelvic floor strengthening. Module two is mental health and is composed of three sections that include positive body image, setting healthy boundaries, and intimate social participation. The purpose of the program is to equip occupational therapists with clinical skills and knowledge as well as provide the profession of occupational with literature to support their role in addressing sexual health with women in recovery from substance use disorder
Examination of Student, Instructor, and Classroom Characteristics to Predict Success in Elementary Algebra at Shawnee State University
There is a high emphasis on gaining a college education in order to prosper and be successful in life. Student success is a high priority to all institutions, but many students enroll into college lacking the basic skills required for college level courses. This is especially true for mathematics. Developmental education started off as tutoring, however, it grew into something more than tutoring alone. Developmental courses were created to help students gain those basic skills so that they can take college level courses and hopefully obtain a college degree. There are concerns with students dropping out without a degree due to the financial burden and frustration related to taking developmental courses. This study seeks to see if there are any areas of improvement that should be made to developmental mathematics courses by examining a group of predictors. A group of predictors consisting of student characteristics, instructor characteristics, and classroom characteristics were selected to analyze. Student characteristics include gender, age, race, ACT Math score, ACT Reading score, math pretest score, 1st generation status, SES, and high school GPA. Instructor characteristics include gender, degree, and employment status. Classroom characteristics include class size, number of times a class meets per week, and time of day the class meets. The dependent variables in this study will be final exam score and overall grade in the developmental mathematics course. The theoretical framework of this study is Tinto’s Theory of Retention which seeks to find out why students drop out of college. In Tinto’s theory, students enter college with a background that could affect the way they integrate into college ultimately leading to the decision to stay in college or drop out. Meaning that if a student doesn’t integrate into college, then that could lead to a decision to leave college. Knowing what the predictors of success are for developmental mathematics is beneficial so that any improvements can be made to the course to help students be more iv successful and thus help students complete college. The sample consists of students who were previously enrolled in a developmental mathematics class at Shawnee State University, Math 0101: Basic Algebra with Geometry Application. The research design of this study is ex-post facto which means that the data already existed, but needed to be collected according to the needs of the study. Data came from student records, department records, class schedules, and from the Director of Developmental Mathematics at Shawnee State University. Regression and ANOVA techniques were implemented to examine the predictors. Standard logistics regression followed up by forward selection logistic regression was used to see any predictors were significant in predicting success in the course. The forward selection logistic regression model was a better fit model compared to the standard logistic regression based off the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and chi-square model comparison. ACT math score, pretest score, high school GPA, class size, and SES (determined by Pell-Grant status) were the predictors that remained in the reduced model. However, Pell-Grant status was not significant even though it remained in the model. There were no significant predictors in the multiple regression models in predicting for the final exam score. Relating back to the theoretical framework of this study, the predictors that were significant in predicting success in the course were all in the pre-college schooling background category. Institutions and the instructors of the developmental mathematics course can keep this in mind when making decisions about the course and help students to be successful in the developmental mathematics course, thus helping them succeed in their college career
