Exploring Midland Dialect of American English: The Change in Progress
This presentation takes a narrative approach to the study of modern American dialectology learned through the digitized recordings of speakers in randomized samplings. It focuses on the southern variety of the Midland dialect of American English (AE) spoken in Portsmouth, OH and its vicinity. The paper attempts to analyze the recordings of an 80+ year-old speaker who has always lived in Southern Ohio rural community and shows very interesting patterns of vowel shifts causing various levels of vowel mergers before nasal and other sounds. Other interesting features of the dialect include glide retention in diphthongs, vowel fronting and backing, some syntactic simplifications, and morphological regularizations. Initially we review Great Vowel Shift (GVS) from the 15th century UK and then show the current vowel shifts that are underway in Northern Cities of Ohio. The presentation is very interesting and entertaining even for those who has no or minimal background in Sociolinguistics
Effects of Occupation-Based Interventions on the Occupational Function of At-Risk Youth
At-risk youth are known as youth with potential psychosocial barriers and/or risk-seeking behaviors. Such youth, due to a variety of at-risk factors, may demonstrate decreased life skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate at-risk youth\u27s response to occupation-based intervention within the area of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). A quasi-experimental, quantitative study was conducted in the Appalachian region among high school students attending an alternative school. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) provided pre- and post-test measures before and after nine sessions of IADL interventions to identify the subjects’ importance, performance, and satisfaction within the areas of IADL. Four students met the inclusion criteria and participated in group interventions. Results demonstrated an average, slight increase in performance (0.53) and satisfaction (0.46) scores with the COPM among subjects. The study yielded positive results but may have been impacted by subject absenteeism and overconfidence of IADL performance during COPM pre-test. Future research is needed to identify occupational therapy interventions that provide the most benefit to at-risk youth

The Use of 3D Printing in Occupational Therapy: A Scoping Review
The field of occupational therapy (OT) has used assistive technology (AT) and adaptive equipment (AE) to enhance occupational performance for people receiving OT services (Hunzeker & Ozelie, 2021). Three-Dimensional (3D) printing technology has gained popularity in this area and has been a unique tool for creating more accessible and customizable AE and AT than commercially available alternatives (Slegers et al., 2022). This scoping review examined the use of 3D printing in OT. Researchers conducted a search across 16 databases to identify relevant articles from May 2024 to November 2024, resulting in 45 articles to review. A thematic analysis was conducted in which 7 themes and 13 subthemes emerged when discussing 3D printing and OT. The 7 themes were accessibility/feasibility, customizability, collaboration, acceptance, further research, education, and ethical considerations. This scoping review revealed more research is needed regarding the clinical application of 3D printing in OT practice and education
An Exploratory Case Study of Social Connections of Older Adult Women Aging in Place
This exploratory case study sought to investigate the social connections of older adult women aging in place in diverse environments and the implications for occupational therapy practice. This study used semi-structured interviews of three women aged 65 to 74 to explore perceived social connection experiences. Participants lived in one of three environments: downsized living, the independent area of a continuing care retirement community or the home in which participants lived most of adult life. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed five themes: independence, social connection, health, activities and community engagement. When providing services for this population, implications for occupational therapy practice may include focus on the occupations of social participation, leisure, health management and instrumental activities of daily living
Development and Implementation of Smart Robot Assistant Swimming Coach
This research project focuses on the initial stages of developing and implementing a smart robot assistant swimming coach. Our work focuses on successfully implementing a swimmer detection system and establishing the groundwork for swimmer tracking functionality. We have created a detection system to identify swimmers in various pool environments by integrating commercial minicomputers with artificial intelligent algorithms. Our preliminary work on the tracking component shows promising results for following swimmer movements throughout training sessions. The completed detection system addresses the first critical challenge in developing automated swimming feedback. While the comprehensive coaching functionality remains under development, this initial phase represents an essential foundation for future work. The swimmer detection system we have developed demonstrates the feasibility of the broader vision to provide swimmers with real-time feedback, setting the stage for continued innovation in sports technology for competitive swimming
High-Altitude Cosmic Ray Detection: Studying Energy and Atmospheric Interactions
Cosmic Rays are atomic nuclei ejected from stars, the majority of these particles that hit the Earth are blocked by Earth’s magnetic field. The high energy primary particles travel in our Earth’s atmosphere until they interact and create a shower of secondary particles. This often happens in the upper atmosphere so to study this interaction we must have a detector on, for instance, a balloon. Dr. Hamilton has run a balloon flight for exactly this purpose, so we are looking at detections and the correlation of altitude and trying to find out how much energy each cosmic ray had
The Betrayal of Apple: Higher Prices for Less Product
Is it ethical for companies like Apple to charge more for their products while excluding the necessary components to use them? In this persuasive essay, we answer that question using the theoretical frameworks of Corporate Social Responsibility Theory, Utilitarianism, Deontological Ethics, and Stakeholder Theory as well as smaller concepts including transparency, fairness, and relationship marketing. Our research found that since the release of the iPhone 12’s, Apple has been excluding the necessary charging blocks from the phone packages but has only increased their prices since then. Using the above listed theories and concepts, we determined that Apple’s decisions are unfair to the customer base both old and new, there was a severe lack of transparency between the company and the customers, the customers felt betrayed and taken advantage of, ethical norms were ignored, and the most amount of good was not done for the most amount of people. Apple’s defense in this issue was the idea of being a more environmentally friendly company by saving materials, reducing packaging, and cutting back on transport. Our research found that this was mostly untrue simply because Apple did not discontinue the manufacturing of their chargers but just started selling them separately which caused people to have to pay extra for the necessary component of their device. This unethical decision led to many troubles for both Apple and its customers and could have been avoided by simply communicating clearly
The Path to Better Solar Cells: Column Chromatography
Solar energy provides a fundamental basis for advancing clean, green energy. However, its current developmental process requires extensive research to be competitive for the race for clean energy. By incorporating a metal complex into an experimental solar cell, the efficiency of the solar cell can be increased. This study aims to use a zinc porphyrin complex solar cell to increase effectiveness. To begin this task, the reagent required for porphyrin complexing, methyl 5-formylfuran-2-carboxylate, must be synthesized and purified through column chromatography. By increasing the efficiency of the synthesis and purification of 5-formylfuran-2-carboxylate, a sufficient portion was collected and analyzed. The next step will be to obtain enough methyl 5-formylfuran-2-carboxylate to form 5-(5-Methoxycarbonyl-2-furyl)-10,15,20-tris(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)porphyrin. As a result, the porphyrin synthesis can be fine-tuned for solar cell experimentation and data collection can provide information for solar power research
