    No full text
The purpose of this study is to showcase the modern form of education known as Mastery Based Learning and the goal of this form of education. Purposeful selection will be used to complete a qualitative study. The Mastery Based Learning study is being conducted to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the modern style of learning. When this article refers to a modern form of education, it is in terms of modern technological learning styles. This style of learning offers a focused approach that allows the students to work at their own pace, giving them the opportunity to retain the knowledge for further use. Students will be focusing on mastery skills needed to succeed in everyday life. These skills consist of analyzing a problem, devising a plan to find a solution to the problem, implementing a plan, and revising and reflecting on the work. The intended outcome of Mastery Based Learning is for students to walk away with a stronger foundation in comprehension and communication and problem-solving skills that are needed to succeed in life after high school. This transformation strives to close both the opportunity gap and resulting achievement gap that creates an environment where each student has a unique style of learning. Being able master the learning material is important to enhance the student’s retained knowledge to prepare them for life after this class

Influence of Color on Interpersonal Attraction

    No full text
A large body of literature suggests that perceivers are more likely to perceive others as attractive when those others are wearing certain colors. For example, women tend to be perceived as more attractive when their dresses are red compared to other colors. The current research utilizes an experimental design to see if the attraction ratings of college students in a rural community are also influenced by color. Participants will be selected with methods to approximate random sampling. Participants then view a fictitious dating profile from the popular online dating website, Tinder. Although most features of the profiles will be identical across experimental conditions, participants are randomly assigned to view the character in different color clothing. After viewing the characters’ profiles, participants will then rate the attractiveness of the characters. When sufficient sample size has been achieved, statistical techniques will test if the average attractiveness ratings significantly differed by experimental condition

Multifaceted Small Group Instruction: Effects on Assessment Scores

    No full text
What is the relationship between a multi-faceted small group of fluency skills and assessment scores? Fluency is one essential building block of a student’s growing literacy. This study aims to investigate the relationship between implementing fluency skills in small groups and a student’s assessment scores. Structured groups were built according to student fluency level. These groups met two-four times a week and implemented a variety of fluency skills, such as repeated reading, pre-reading vocabulary, and tracing sight words. My analysis of this research has shown that there is a positive correlation between the small-group intervention of fluency skills and student assessment scores. After receiving this intervention, students oral reading fluency scores increased

    No full text
The purpose of this project is to determine whether preschool attendance has an effect on students\u27 kindergarten readiness. This topic is important because it shows how influential a child’s early learning experiences are on their academic career. The objective of my research was to investigate the achievement gap between children who had attended a high-quality preschool setting and those that did not. Assessments were given to the six students that were chosen as participants. These assessments were given at the end of every nine week period, along with a baseline assessment, given before the students began kindergarten. The analysis of data shows that students who attended a high-quality preschool setting have higher achievement on assessments throughout each nine week period compared to those that did not. This project concluded that children who attend preschool will have a higher rate of achievement, entering and completing kindergarten than those that did not

The paper “Pre-Service Teacher Experiences with Writing: the Good, Bad, and Unsaid” provides a qualitative study of AYA English Language Arts pre-service teacher experiences with writing. This research uses primary sources in the form of interviews with four AYA English Language Arts pre-service teachers in addition to substantial background research on existing data surrounding writing experiences. The findings of this study highlight notable trends of value and nonvalue in pre-service teacher experiences with writing. Sub-categories emerged from the value and nonvalue containers to reveal recurring topics of the value of instructor feedback and writing agency, as well as the nonvalue of experiencing dread and apathy while writing. In short, the results of this study illustrate the importance of future research in pre-service teacher experiences with writing to support the next generation of educators and writing instructors

    Leaping for Literacy Through Tutoring

    No full text
Scholarship about the science of reading affirms the importance of teaching phonics and phonemic awareness to beginning readers. However, despite evidence from neuroscience explaining how people learn to read, poor practices in teaching children persist in elementary schools. Further, online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected young learners\u27 reading progress. Recognizing the statewide literacy gaps, the Ohio Department of Education awarded Shawnee State University a two-year grant, Literacy LEAPS, to strengthen literacy among children from kindergarten through fourth grade through small group tutoring. SSU education majors tutor children in 30-minute sessions three to four times a week using a curriculum rooted in the science of reading. In this session, four Literacy LEAPS tutors will share information about the urgency and importance of literacy intervention, the documented growth of children in the program, and their personal and professional growth as preservice educators from this experience
