    Simplifying Library Value for Non-Library Development Officers and Staff

    With the rise of evidenced based budgeting the need for nontechnical illustration has become increasingly important for telling the story of library place within the academic community. Because librarians tend to speak their own language; how do you translate librarian speak for non-librarians when it comes to discussing library value? During Fall Semester 2014, Auburn University Libraries faculty and staff produced a series of infographics for use during a successful presentation by the libraries’ development officer to other Auburn University development officers and staff. These infographics clearly laid out in non-library jargon the costs and returns on investments for the three major divisions of Humanities; Social Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM).Ye

    Because You're You: Factors Influencing Item Selection in a Digital Sheet Music Collection

    The purpose of this study was to examine factors influencing user selection of individual works in a collection of digitized sheet music. Google Analytics page view data were grouped by source (directing link) and correlated with five factors: (1) inclusion in a collaborative indexing project (Sheet Music Consortium); (2) browse list order; (3) cover appearance; (4) inclusion in mini-collections; and (5) presence of links to audio versions. Four of the five factors examined showed some influence on user selection: (1) Works listed in the Sheet Music Consortium had more views/work than those not listed. (2) Works at the top of the Sheet Music Consortium browse list had more views by Consortium users than those lower down. (3) Works with cover graphics had more views/work than those with covers containing words alone. (4) Works included in mini-collections received more views/work from users with access to those mini-collections. (5) Works with links to audio versions did not have more views/work than works without links. The most important finding of this study is that the best way to increase the use of individual collection items may be to participate in a large and well-known collaborative index such as the Sheet Music Consortium.PublishedYe

    Off the Airplane and into the Library: Making a Good First Impression in Any Language

    At Auburn University, new international students receive their initial library orientation and tour within days of arrival. Considering that they are among our most frequent library users, it is important that we address the needs of this user group from the outset. Using English Language Learning (ELL) theories as our guide, we adapted our standard orientation and ethnographic tour to reduce the types of anxiety often experienced by international students. In particular, we wanted to create a hands-on activity that reduced the need for students to worry about a lack of vocabulary, public speaking, negative evaluation, or competition with peers. Our modified approach allowed students to learn outside the classroom with peers and in their own languages, then in the larger instructor-led English classroom, where the information was reinforced and repeated.N

    Assessing Class and Course Libguides According to Bloom’s Revised and Digital Taxonomies

    Given the current popularity and prevalence of Springshare’s Libguides, and the ability to create subsequent class or course guides, questions arise about the effectiveness of such pages. Librarians have expended time and effort in creating thousands of these instructional guides. In addition, given the collaborative nature of the tool, librarians have freely shared (and copied) numerous pages at an amazing rate. Yet, outside of page count hits, it appears that little has been done to assess the effectiveness of these pages. Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy and Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy provide framework for reviewing and considering class/course guide content and its relationship to information literacy, student learning outcomes and levels of learning. This extensive survey of over 500 pages from eight southeastern land grant institutions*, along with two historically black colleges in the region**, attempts to formally assess class and course guides according to the Bloom construct. The study has provided a number of data points for discussion, including a percentage breakdown of where pages fall in terms of the taxonomies, the prevalence, or lack of, explicit and/or implicit information literacy learning outcomes, prominent vocabulary used by creators, whether or not active learning is encouraged, and if student assessment/feedback is incorporated within the guides. Preliminary results indicate the majority of class and course guides reflect the most basic domain of cognitive skills and require little student engagement. In addition, while student learning outcomes are often stated explicitly, further analysis suggests these outcomes are not addressed in actual content. The paper concludes with suggestions for best practice in creating more effective class and course guides, encouraging and demonstrating a higher order of thinking and engagement for students. This research project answers a number of questions, but also raises a number of questions that will hopefully provide additional “food for thought” for future consideration

    Fast magnetosonic waves driven by shell velocity distributions

    Using linear dispersion theory and particle-in-cell simulations, we explore the ion Bernstein instability driven by the shell-type ion velocity distribution which is related to the excitation of fast magnetosonic waves in the terrestrial magnetosphere. We first demonstrate a novel idea to construct the shell velocity distribution out of multiple Maxwellian ring-beam velocity distributions. Applying this technique, we find that the convergence of the linear theory instability can be achieved with only a moderate number of ring-beam components. In order to prove that such an approximation is legitimate and the linear theory instabilities evaluated are indeed valid, we use the exact shell distribution to carry out a number of one dimensional particle-in-cell simulations corresponding to multiple wave propagation angles adjacent to the direction at which the most unstable waves are expected to grow. The agreement between the linear dispersion analysis and the simulation results is generally very good: enhanced waves are organized along the linear theory dispersion curves in the frequency-wave number space, and relative wave amplitudes are ordered as the linear theory growth rates very well. However, the simulations show a few extra branches that are not expected from the linear dispersion analysis. A close examination of these extra branches suggests that they are not simulation artifacts and particularly related to the ring/shell-type distributions with large ring/shell speed (v>approximate to 1.5 v(A), where v(A) is the Alfven speed). In addition, our results show that substantial wave growth can occur at nonintegral harmonics of the proton cyclotron frequency at wave normal angles substantially far away from the perpendicular direction, which may provide an alternative explanation of the off-harmonic peaks of some fast magnetosonic waves observed in space.Publishe
