    The Effects of Crop Insurance Subsidies and Sodsaver on Land-Use Change

    It is well known that insurance market information asymmetry can cause socially excessive cropping of yield-risky land. We show that crop insurance subsidies can cause the same problem absent information failures. Using field-level yield data, we find an inversed U-shaped relationship between crop prices and crop insurance subsidies' land-use impacts. For seventeen counties in the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region, simulations show that 0.05% to 3.3% (about 2,600 to 157,900 acres) of land under crop insurance would not have been converted from grassland had premium subsidies not existed.     Active Listening Leads to Action: Communication and Partners in the Learning Commons

    Academic libraries with learning commons host a wider variety of student services than ever before. In addition to traditional research help, students come to learning commons for technology support, academic advising, writing assistance, and tutoring. The variety and number of services provided in learning commons would be impossible if not for successful partnerships with other campus units. To keep learning commons operating effectively, it is vital that libraries and partners keep channels of communication open. However, this is easier said than done. Though libraries and partners may be housed in the same building, their physical proximity does not necessarily ensure that employees from the different groups are communicating effectively. Five years after the creation of a learning commons, librarians at one research university held interviews with representatives from the eight partner organizations housed in the library's learning commons to explore perceptions of communication between the library and its partners. During these interviews several lapses in communication came to light--some partners were not included in e-mails about the building, the library was not kept abreast of changes in partners services. Awareness of these gaps allowed the library to renew its efforts to connect with each of its partners. This poster shares feedback collected from Auburn University Libraries' partners and details what changes were enacted to improve communication, including the naming of a partners liaison and the development of a web portal that has been used to share information between the different units.Ye

    Toward more realistic projections of soil carbon dynamics by Earth system models

    Soil carbon (C) is a critical component of Earth system models (ESMs), and its diverse representations are a major source of the large spread across models in the terrestrial C sink from the third to fifth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Improving soil C projections is of a high priority for Earth system modeling in the future IPCC and other assessments. To achieve this goal, we suggest that (1) model structures should reflect real-world processes, (2) parameters should be calibrated to match model outputs with observations, and (3) external forcing variables should accurately prescribe the environmental conditions that soils experience. First, most soil C cycle models simulate C input from litter production and C release through decomposition. The latter process has traditionally been represented by first-order decay functions, regulated primarily by temperature, moisture, litter quality, and soil texture. While this formulation well captures macroscopic soil organic C (SOC) dynamics, better understanding is needed of their underlying mechanisms as related to microbial processes, depth-dependent environmental controls, and other processes that strongly affect soil C dynamics. Second, incomplete use of observations in model parameterization is a major cause of bias in soil C projections from ESMs. Optimal parameter calibration with both pool-and flux-based data sets through data assimilation is among the highest priorities for near-term research to reduce biases among ESMs. Third, external variables are represented inconsistently among ESMs, leading to differences in modeled soil C dynamics. We recommend the implementation of traceability analyses to identify how external variables and model parameterizations influence SOC dynamics in different ESMs. Overall, projections of the terrestrial C sink can be substantially improved when reliable data sets are available to select the most representative model structure, constrain parameters, and prescribe forcing fields.PublishedYe

    Library instruction for students in speech-language pathology and audiology: Which databases should be covered?

    Purpose: 1) To determine which databases are commonly recommended for students in speech-language pathology (SLP) and audiology programs 2) To compare journal indexing in those databases to decide which ones should be prioritized when teaching “one-shot” sessions. Methodology: Libguides of top-ranked audiology and SLP programs were examined to develop a list of recommended databases. Journal Citation Reports, SCImago Journal Rankings, and Google Scholar Top Publications were used to create a list of core journals in the subject area. Each of the identified databases was checked for indexing of core journals; the resulting spreadsheet was analyzed to determine which database or combination of databases offered the most complete coverage of core journals. Results: Six recommended databases and 34 core journals were identified. One journal was not indexed in any of the databases; no single database indexed all the remaining 33 titles. Web of Science included the most titles (28) but only if all sections (Science Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index) are available; PubMed/Medline was second with 26 titles. Indexing for 32 of 33 titles is available in two different database combinations, 1) PubMed/Medline and PsycINFO or 2) Web of Science (all sections) and Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts. Conclusion: A multi-session library instruction class might be able to cover the use of most or all of the six identified databases but many librarians are limited to one session with students and need to limit the number of new resources taught. This study found two database groupings which offer indexing for 32 of 33 core journals. Librarians can use information from this study together with institution-specific factors to decide which databases to prioritize in instruction sessions for SLP and audiology students

    Kinetic Alfven waves in three-dimensional magnetic reconnection

    Alfvenic waves are believed to be fundamentally important in magnetic reconnection. Kinetic dynamics of particles can break the Alfven speed limit in the evolution and propagation of perturbations during reconnection. In this paper, the generation and signatures of kinetic Alfven waves (KAWs) associated with magnetic reconnection in a current sheet is investigated using a three-dimensional (3-D) hybrid code under a zero or finite guide field. In order to understand the wave structures in the general cases of multiple X line reconnection, cases with a single X line of various lengths are examined. The KAWs are identified using the wave dispersion relation, electromagnetic polarization relations, as well as spectral analysis. In the cases in which the X line is so long to extend through the entire simulation domain in the current direction, quasi 2-D configurations of reconnection are developed behind a leading flux/plasma bulge. KAWs with perpendicular wave number k(i)approximate to 1 (with (i) being the ion Larmor radius) are found throughout the transient plasma bulge region and propagate outward along magnetic field lines with a slightly super-Alfvenic velocity. These KAWs are generated from the X line and coexist with the whistler structure of the ion diffusion region under a small guide field. In the cases in which the X line has a finite length 2 approximate to 10d(i), with being the half length of the X line and d(i) the ion inertial length, the KAWs originated from the X line are of 3-D nature. Under a finite guide field, KAWs propagate along the oblique magnetic field lines into the unperturbed regions in the current direction, carrying parallel electric field and Poynting fluxes. The critical X line length for the generation of 3-D-like structures is found to be 2(c)30d(i). The structure, propagation, energy, spectrum, and damping of the KAWs are examined. Dependence of the structure of KAWs on the guide field is also investigated.Publishe

    Micro- and Macroevolutionary Trade-Offs in Plant-Feeding Insects

    A long-standing hypothesis asserts that plant-feeding insects specialize on particular host plants because of negative interactions (trade-offs) between adaptations to alternative hosts, yet empirical evidence for such trade-offs is scarce. Most studies have looked for microevolutionary performance trade-offs within insect species, but host use could also be constrained by macroevolutionary trade-offs caused by epistasis and historical contingency. Here we used a phylogenetic approach to estimate the micro- and macroevolutionary correlations between use of alternative host-plant taxa within two major orders of plant-feeding insects: Lepidoptera (caterpillars) and Hemiptera (true bugs). Across 1,604 caterpillar species, we found both positive and negative pairwise correlations between use of 11 host-plant orders, with overall network patterns suggesting that different host-use constraints act over micro- and macroevolutionary timescales. In contrast, host-use patterns of 955 true bug species revealed uniformly positive correlations between use of the same 11 host plant orders over both timescales. The lack of consistent patterns across timescales and insect orders indicates that host-use trade-offs are historically contingent rather than universal constraints. Moreover, we observed few negative correlations overall despite the wide taxonomic and ecological diversity of the focal host-plant orders, suggesting that positive interactions between host-use adaptations, not trade-offs, dominate the long-term evolution of host use in plant-feeding insects.PublishedYe
