The fern species Arachniodes simplicior (Makino) Ohwi (Dryopteridaceae) is documented for the first time from Lee County, Alabama, U.S.A. The habitat where it was found is consistent with other known localities of this species. Originally reported from one county in South Carolina in 1981, it has now spread to 28 counties in ten states, with unknown consequences of the spread of this species and its invasive potential.PublishedYe

This proof of concept attempts to address the traditional research methods that often fail to capture the complex, pre-verbal emotional realities of teachers, a phenomenon. The AI-GEEEM method addresses this by leveraging generative AI to create a psychologically safe space for teachers to share their experiences. Alabama Charter School Parent Voice
In 2015, Alabama became the 43rd state to establish charter schools as part of their public education system. To
better understand if Alabama charter schools meet their objectives, we conducted a survey (and subsequent focus
groups) of 460 parents across six Alabama charter schools during the 2023-24 school year. By large margins,
parents expressed high satisfaction with their child’s school. Moreover, 87% indicated they would re-enroll their
child at their school, and the same proportion gave their school a letter grade of A or B. Parents across all racial
and special education groups similarly agreed that their child’s school leader and teachers were responsive and that
their school was inclusive of all students.N
Videos associated with “Protocol for synchronizing waveforms and videos from electropenetrography studies of arthropods”
Electropenetrography (EPG) is a non-invasive technique for quantifying intra-tissue host-arthropod interactions and behaviors. To use EPG on new species, waveforms must be correlated with behaviors and biological activities. Synchronizing observed waveforms with video recordings of the arthropods during EPG can aid in defining the biological meanings of the waveforms. Our procedure for using Observer XT Behavioral Coding Software to synchronize EPG waveforms with video recordings is published as a “Protocol for synchronizing waveforms and videos from electropenetrography studies of arthropods.” This article references videos in the expected outcomes that are archived here.Submitte
High-resolution fluorescence images of Drosophila ovaries
To compare the differences of caloric density on oogenesis and DNA degradation, adult females were collected at three time points: 0, 2, and 5 days post-eclosion. A total of 81 flies were dissected in the morning to ensure consistency, with no more than 20 minutes between the start of dissection and fixation to prevent tissue degradation. Ovaries were processed following Meehan et al. (2015), staining nuclei with DAPI (Vectashield with DAPI) and detecting DNA degradation with Fluorescein-12-dUTP via the DeadEnd™ Fluorometric TUNEL System (Promega). High-resolution fluorescence images were captured using a BZ-X microscope. Sample sizes of successfully stained ovaries used in the analysis per genetic background, age, and diet can be found in Supplementary Table 2. Oocyte developmental stages were classified according to Jia et al (2016), into five groups: germarium, stages 270 1 – 7, stages 8 – 10, stage 11, and stages 12-14. Images were standardized for size and brightness, converted to black and white using scikit-image v0.22.0 (Walt et al. 2014) and Napari (Chiu et al. 2022) in Jupyter (Kluyver et al. 2016), and annotated via a trained AI model in APEER (Dang et al. 2021). Model training included manual annotation of at least 50 objects per class (developmental stages and background) in a randomly selected images, with iterative updates until accuracy exceeded 95%. Lessons from the Implementation of Virginia's Cell Phone Policy
In April 2025, we conducted a follow-up survey of teachers from a school division in Southeast Virginia regarding the implementation of Virginia’s new cell phone policy. Teachers expressed strong support for the cell phone ban, citing increased student engagement and learning. Though a majority of teachers expressed support for the policy, teachers shared concerns regarding consistency in enforcing the policy. When comparing survey data from before the implementation of the policy to after, there were significant changes in teachers’ perspectives, including cell phones being less of a distraction in the classroom, teachers reporting less of a workload, and teachers feeling less supported by colleagues

AI in Elementary English Language Arts: Perceptions, Concerns, and Imperatives For Teacher Education
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into K-12 education necessitates a proactive examination of teacher preparedness, particularly in elementary English Language Arts (ELA) instruction. This quantitative, descriptive study investigated Auburn University pre-service elementary education students' dispositions and attitudes regarding AI adoption and diffusion for writing instruction. Utilizing a researcher-developed Likert-type interval measurement scale (α=0.906) grounded in Rogers's Theory of Adoption and Diffusion and Davis's Technology Acceptance Model was provided to the participants (N = 32). Key findings revealed strong AI awareness (M=4.61) and high personal access to AI (M=4.48), alongside confidence in AI-enhancing lesson planning (M=4.00) and learning AI writing skills (M=3.97). However, significant apprehensions emerged, including concerns about student dependency on AI (M=4.72), compromised academic integrity (M=4.66), and a lack of clear ethical guidelines (M=4.38). Participants expressed skepticism regarding AI's capacity to benefit critical thinking (M=2.6). The study underscores the need for structured support in teacher education, advocating for comprehensive AI literacy, including technical, pedagogical, and ethical considerations, and developing clear guidelines to foster responsible AI integration. Thoughtful implementation of AI can serve as a powerful partner, tutor, and scaffolding tool to strengthen, rather than diminish, students' critical thinking skills
