Telling Your Libraries’ Fiscal and Service Story on One Page
As part of the new budget model implementation, our University created the Central Unit Allocations Committee to review and evaluate all campus units’ financial plans. This committee was comprised of academic and non-academic representatives from across campus may have had little familiarity with the mission, scope, and/or fiscal needs of the units it was reviewing.
To help the committee, stakeholders were required to produce a one-sided; one page document that covered four specific areas and the document deadline was within two weeks of the request. How do you boil down a multi-million dollar budget and explain the diverse collections, initiatives, and services of a twenty-first century academic library to just one page and in a few days? Not easily; but with planning, communication, and compromise it can be done
Proton velocity ring-driven instabilities and their dependence on the ring speed: Linear theory
Linear dispersion theory is used to study the Alfven-cyclotron, mirror and ion Bernstein instabilities driven by a tenuous (1%) warm proton ring velocity distribution with a ring speed, v(r), varying between 2v(A) and 10v(A), where v(A) is the Alfven speed. Relatively cool background protons and electrons are assumed. The modeled ring velocity distributions are unstable to both the Alfven-cyclotron and ion Bernstein instabilities whose maximum growth rates are roughly a linear function of the ring speed. The mirror mode, which has real frequency omega(r)=0, becomes the fastest growing mode for sufficiently large v(r)/v(A). The mirror and Bernstein instabilities have maximum growth at propagation oblique to the background magnetic field and become more field-aligned with an increasing ring speed. Considering its largest growth rate, the mirror mode, in addition to the Alfven-cyclotron mode, can cause pitch angle diffusion of the ring protons when the ring speed becomes sufficiently large. Moreover, because the parallel phase speed, v(vertical bar ph), becomes sufficiently small relative to v(r), the low-frequency Bernstein waves can also aid the pitch angle scattering of the ring protons for large v(r). Potential implications of including these two instabilities at oblique propagation on heliospheric pickup ion dynamics are discussed.PublishedYe
Magma-facilitated transpressional strain partitioning within the Sawtooth metamorphic complex, Idaho: A zone accommodating Cretaceous orogen-parallel translation in the Idaho batholith
Structural data from metasedimentary rocks and geochronologic data from intrusive rocks in the Idaho batholith provide evidence for the relationship between deformation and magmatism in the northern U.S. Cordillera. The Sawtooth metamorphic complex (SMC), Idaho, is exposed as an inlier in the central Idaho batholith and contains strongly deformed metasedimentary and intrusive rocks. Geologic mapping reveals north-south-striking, alternating contraction- and shear-dominated domains across strike. The contraction-dominated domains consist of centimeter- to tens of meter-scale, shallowly to steeply plunging upright folds with subhorizontal lineations. The shear-dominated domains are characterized by highly strained subvertical foliations, subhorizontal lineations, and syntectonic intrusive sheets. Pervasive S-C structures, winged porphyroclasts, and asymmetric folds indicate dextral strike-slip shearing. The fabrics in the two types of domains are structurally compatible and are interpreted to be broadly synchronous. This work suggests that the SMC structures represent a wrench-dominated transpressional zone, in which the regional strain partitioned into the contraction- and shear-dominated domains and the partitioning was facilitated by emplacement of syntectonic magmas. Zircon U-Pb data of the syntectonic intrusions indicate that the SMC transpressional deformation occurred mainly between ca. 95-92Ma and ca. 84Ma and had ended by ca. 77Ma. The transpressional deformation in the SMC and the western Idaho shear zone (WISZ) were kinematically compatible and partially coeval. This suggests that the SMC and WISZ represent a regional transpression system and that crustal deformation inboard of the continental margin may have contributed to the northward orogen-parallel translation of accreted terranes during the Late Cretaceous.PublishedYe

Embargo Periods and External Publication for History Dissertations
A policy statement issued by the American Historical Association (AHA) in July 2013 recommended that institutions with mandatory deposit allow creators to embargo their ETDs for a period of up to six years. The reason given for the policy was that open access might endanger publication of ETDs as monographs and that lengthy embargos could protect graduates’ ability to publish their work. Implementation of embargo in the U.S. has been far from uniform; every institution has its own policies and procedures. Nonetheless, since 2013, any institution which makes its ETDs openly available has had to deal with the expectations raised by the AHA policy statement. This presentation will examine the influence of the AHA policy by comparing history PhD candidates’ embargo decisions before and after 2013. It will also examine the publication of monographs based on history dissertations. Numbers of published monographs derived from electronic dissertations will be compared for unrestricted and restricted titles to evaluate whether access restriction confers a publication advantage. The time elapsed between dissertation date and monograph publication will also be compared for both groups. This presentation will expand on my earlier research which was limited to dissertations at Auburn University and will look at history dissertations from other research universities around the U.S. to see if the AU results were a local phenomenon only or part of a wider trend
