    Communication: Water activation and splitting by single metal-atom anions

    We report experimental and computational results pertaining to the activation and splitting of single water molecules by single atomic platinum anions. The anion photoelectron spectra of [Pt(H2O)](-), formed under different conditions, exhibit spectral features that are due to the anion-molecule complex, Pt-(H2O), and to the reaction intermediates, HPtOH- and H2PtO-, in which one and two O-H bonds have been broken, respectively. Additionally, the observations of PtO- and H-2(+) in mass spectra strongly imply that water splitting via the reaction Pt- + H2O -> PtO- + H-2 has occurred. Extending these studies to nickel and palladium shows that they too are able to activate single water molecules, as evidenced by the formation of the reaction intermediates, HNiOH- and HPdOH-. Computations at the coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbatively connected triples level of theory provide structures and vertical detachment energies (VDEs) for both HMOH- and H2MO- intermediates.     Forest restoration as a strategy to mitigate climate impacts on wildfire, vegetation, and water in semiarid forests

    Climate change and wildfire are interacting to drive vegetation change and potentially reduce water quantity and quality in the southwestern United States, Forest restoration is a management approach that could mitigate some of these negative outcomes. However, little information exists on how restoration combined with climate change might influence hydrology across large forest landscapes that incorporate multiple vegetation types and complex fire regimes. We combined spatially explicit vegetation and fire modeling with statistical water and sediment yield models for a large forested landscape (335,000 ha) on the Kaibab Plateau in northern Arizona, USA. Our objective was to assess the impacts of climate change and forest restoration on the future fire regime, forest vegetation, and watershed outputs. Our model results predict that the combination of climate change and high‐severity fire will drive forest turnover, biomass declines, and compositional change in future forests. Restoration treatments may reduce the area burned in high‐severity fires and reduce conversions from forested to non‐forested conditions. Even though mid‐elevation forests are the targets of restoration, the treatments are expected to delay the decline of high‐elevation spruce–fir, aspen, and mixed conifer forests by reducing the occurrence of high‐severity fires that may spread across ecoregions. We estimate that climate‐induced vegetation changes will result in annual runoff declines of up to 10%, while restoration reduced or reversed this decline. The hydrologic model suggests that mid‐elevation forests, which are the targets of restoration treatments, provide around 80% of runoff in this system and the conservation of mid‐ to high‐elevation forests types provides the greatest benefit in terms of water conservation. We also predict that restoration treatments will conserve water quality by reducing patches of high‐severity fire that are associated with high sediment yield. Restoration treatments are a management strategy that may reduce undesirable outcomes for multiple ecosystem services.PublishedYe

    An in vivo test of the biologically relevant roles of carotenoids as antioxidants in animals

    Carotenoids are well known for their contribution to the vibrant coloration of many animals and have been hypothesized to be important antioxidants. Surprisingly few examples of carotenoids acting as biologically relevant antioxidants in vivo exist, in part because experimental designs often employ carotenoid doses at levels that are rarely observed in nature. Here, we used an approach that reduces carotenoid content from wild-type levels to test for the effect of carotenoids as protectants against an oxidative challenge. We used the marine copepod Tigriopus califomicus reared on a carotenoid-free or a carotenoid-restored diet of nutritional yeast and then exposed them to a pro-oxidant. We found that carotenoid-deficient copepods not only accumulated more damage but also were more likely to die during an oxidative challenge than carotenoid-restored copepods. We suggest that carotenoid reduction, and not supplementation, better tests the proposed roles of carotenoids in other physiological functions in animals.PublishedYe

    Embedding Information Literacy Instruction throughout the Curriculum

    Subject librarians at Auburn have traditionally taught information literacy sessions within the disciplines on an ad hoc basis. While they have wanted a more formal role in courses, their involvement depends on the willingness of instructors-of-record inviting them into the classroom. With upcoming changes to general education outcome assessment, the Libraries’ responsibility for teaching and assessing SLO 1 – information literacy – has taken on greater importance. This, along with other factors, inspired subject librarians to embark on a curriculum mapping project to more systemically embed information literacy instruction across the curriculum. This poster will share the details of this project.N

    From Hostile to Inclusive: Strategies for Improving the Racial Climate of Academic Libraries

    Despite the presence of programs such as the American Library Association (ALA) Spectrum Scholarship and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Initiative to Recruit a Diverse Workforce, Library and Information Science (LIS) has not been successful in increasing the number of racial/ethnic minorities in the profession, especially in academic libraries. Though the LIS literature addresses recruitment and retention of people of color, very few articles acknowledge that some individuals from underrepresented populations may experience the profession as chilly or even hostile due to racism, especially as it is manifested in the form of racial microaggressions. Although often delivered unconsciously, these seemingly benign exchanges convey to the recipient negative and denigrating messages about that person’s race or ethnicity. The burden of work relating to diversity and inclusion in the profession has typically been placed on people of color, but those of us who are White also have a responsibility to engage in these endeavors. This article will identify steps that White academic librarians can take to prevent and address racial microaggressions in order to become better allies to our colleagues of color.PublishedYe

    Reframing Information Literacy Assessment: Reaching for College Seniors

    Although our institution has a history of information literacy assessment for general education, we found the method used did not allow us to tell a compelling story about students’ information literacy skills. After a “reflection year,” we centralized summative assessment and focused on seniors. Disaggregation of senior-level data will reveal answers to questions such as, “Do students who had an information literacy session do better than those who do not?” and “Do transfer students perform as well as students who started as freshmen?” This manuscript describes our process and the details of the power of our data collection strategy.PublishedN
