Does Aid Work? New Evidence from Recent Empirical Studies

    No full text
This chapter reviews the outcomes of empirical research on the aid–growth nexus since the publication of the Assessing Aid report. It discusses what policy lessons can be drawn from this research and whether there is a need for the donor community to reconsider aid policies in case they have been based on the results of the World Bank report. The chapter provides a short description of the World Bank research results, and in particular of the Burnside–Dollar paper. It discusses the criticism of the Burnside–Dollar study, which has been raised in a number of studies. The chapter overviews empirical studies that present alternative views on how aid may affect growth. It discusses policy lessons. The chapter also focuses on the critique expressed regarding the econometric background papers to the Assessing Aid report, in particular the work of Burnside–Dollar.</p

The usefulness and feasibility of a reflexivity method to improve clinical handover

    No full text
Objective The evaluation of the usefulness and feasibility of the reflexivity method (RM), which encourages dialogue and reflections between doctors, and enables change. Methods On the basis of literature research into effective medical professional learning and reflection, essential elements that stimulate reflection and learning were distinguished and converted into the basic elements of a method developed for this purpose, the RM. The method is used as a tool to stimulate reflection processes, which, in turn, will enable change. It was used 20 times in a large university medical centre in the Netherlands. Clinical handovers were the subject of reflection. The evaluation of the usefulness and feasibility of the RM is based on analysing the improvements realized by using the method, and a questionnaire to measure the experiences of the users of the method. Results Each of the 17 departments evaluated received 10 recommendations on average. Fifty-eight per cent of these were realized after 6-9 months, and 18% were in the working-out phase. Improvements in the structure, rules and protocols concerning handovers were realized as well as in the atmosphere. The users of the method evaluated the method overall positively: they appreciated the created context for reflection, that is, having a dialogue with a colleague working at the same hierarchical level, the non-normative character of the method and the 'doctor-ownership' of the method. They also reported an effect on their handling and thinking regarding handovers. Conclusions The RM seems to be a useful and feasible method to stimulate the doctors' reflection processes, resulting in implemented improvements.</p

    Postponement:An inter-organizational perspective

    No full text
In view of the slow rate of postponement applications, this paper attempts to examine postponement strategies from an inter-organizational perspective. The paper first reviews the literature on different postponement strategies (including logistics postponement, production postponement, purchasing postponement, and product-development postponement) mainly within the context of the supply chain or supply network. Then, two research questions are formulated. This is followed by the investigation into the inter-organizational structure and capacity planning in postponement applications. The paper concludes with some suggestions for further research.</p
