PROXIMATE DETERMINANTS AND FERTILITY DIFFERENTIALS IN BENDEL STATE, NIGERIA

    Get PDF
The paper examines the contribution of proximate determinants to the understanding of rural-urban and ethnic fertility differentials in Bendel State of Nigeria. The Bongaarts model provides a framework for analyzing the relationships between fertility and its proximate determinants. The results of the analysis showed that durations of breastfeeding, amenorrhea and postpartum sexual abstinence are relatively short in Bendel State compared with some other ethnic groups in Nigeria. Higher education, urban residence and participation in modern sector employment are associated with shorter duration of breastfeeding, amenorrhea and postpartum sexual abstinence and greater use of contraception. Although the findings of the study suggest that the Bongaarts model will yield better results if applied to large samples, the analysis shows that differences in proximate determinants help to explain fertility differentials. Thus the near equality between fertility levels in urban and rural centres is arrived at through different combinations of proximate indices. Findings suggest the need for a vigorous family planning information programme to improve knowledge about the benefits of smaller families and practice of family planning

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Spousal sexual violence, sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections among ever-married women in Uganda

Despite the increasing recognition of the significance of spousal sexual violence in developing countries, evidence on its consequences for reproductive health remains limited. The aim of the paper was to examine the relationship between spousal sexual violence (SSV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) using a sample of 1749 ever-married women, from the 2006 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey. Pearson Chi-square tests and binary logistic regressions were used to investigate associations between SSV, STIs and selected reproductive health outcomes. From the analyses, 25% and 15% of ever-married women experienced SSV and reported STIs, respectively in the last 12 months. Women who experienced SSV were twice more likely to have had STIs in the last 12 months compared to those who did not. SSV is an important social and public health problem having implications on women's reproductive health and interventions to improve it should directly address the issue of spousal sexual violence

Linkages between autonomy, poverty and contraceptive use in two sub-Saharan African countries

The paper presents the interaction effect of poverty-wealth status and autonomy on modern contraceptive use in Nigeria and Namibia with a view to examining whether poor women with less autonomy are less likely to use modern contraception than other women. A weighted sample of 3,451 currently married women in 2006-07 Namibia Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and 23,578 in 2008 Nigeria (DHS) are used in the analysis. In Nigeria, the odd of using modern contraception is nearly 15 times higher among rich women with more autonomy than their counterparts who are poor and are less autonomous and 5.5 times higher among Namibian women. The study concluded that contraceptive behaviors of currently married women of Namibia and Nigeria are not independent of the linkage between poverty and autonomy and thus recommended that more concerted efforts be made in addressing poverty and improving the autonomous status of women in sub-Sahara Africa

Media Exposure and Reproductive Health Behaviour Among Young Females in Ghana

    Get PDF
The study is premised on the hypothesis that a young woman’s exposure to the media increases her knowledge about sexual and reproductive health risks, which in turn, influences her to adopt positive sexual and reproductive behaviour. Using the 2003 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey dataset on women 15-24 years, the study finds that although a young woman’s exposure to the newspapers positively affects her sexual and reproductive behaviour, overall no consistent and statistically significant results were produced particularly with reference to the electronic media (radio and television). The conclusion is that mere exposure to the media may not be enough to change one’s sexual and reproductive behaviour if the contents of the particular media source do not positively address sexual and reproductive health issues, a subject which the study calls for further research

Gender-Role Attitudes and Reproductive Health Communication among Female Adolescents in South Nyanza, Kenya1

In this paper, we use data from three districts of Nyanza Province in Kenya to examine gender-role attitudes and reproductive health communication among adolescent females aged 12-19 years. We test for differences in gender-role attitudes between younger (12-15) and older (16-19) adolescents. We explore the possible association between educational attainment and gender-role attitudes by estimating a random effects model. We also examine the association between gender-role attitudes and reproductive health communication via an unordered multinomial logit model. The results show that adolescent females in this setting hold conservative views on decision making within the home and at the same time portray less conservative views concerning marriage and reproductive behaviour. We also find some differences by age regarding gender-role attitudes and reproductive health communication. Our findings further indicate that educational attainment is significantly associated with gender-role attitudes, which in turn are significantly associated with reproductive health communication.

    Get PDF

Mots clés : Côte d’Ivoire, FEM/PNUD, Education relative à l’environnement, Milieu rural, Projet de développementAbstract The environmental behavior of farmers remains a field of research that concerns many researchers in the South because of its strong involvement in Sustainable Development issues. Thus, International Organizations such as GEF / UNDP Microfinance carry out actions in the sense of environmental conservation, advocating for the reduction of poverty in rural areas. Objectives, in many cases in Ivory Coast, are away from this predefined vision. Our article attempts from Beekeeping projects developed by GEF/UNDP of Microfinance,to highlight variables involved actively to widen this gap. Thus, by analyzing the official documents and participants’ speeches in this project, we produced results related to teaching strategies about Environmental Education (EE) in these projects that are poorly controlled by trainers, the pronounced interest of farmers for environmental destruction for survival and finally the lack of clear environmental conservation vision in the official documents of the projects. Keywords: Ivory Coast, GEF/UNDP; Environmental Education; Rural areas; Development projec
