    No full text
Abstract: This paper aims to show the links between production, content, and audience for bestselling books in Quebec. It integrates communicational, literary, sociological, and economic methodologies. The study found that the bestseller market for books sold in French in Quebec is divided among books from the U.S., France, and Quebec. Quebec's authors and publishers get a share of approximately 40% of the market. Content of bestselling fiction and biographies can be characterized as having a storyline typically built around a struggle for social success. Bestsellers reach nearly half of the population. Women and people with a college education are typical readers of bestsellers. Psychological realism is a strong element in the definition of a "good book.''

Toward a Subject-Oriented Worldview of Information

    No full text
Abstract: The common view of information is rooted in a mathematical tradition which considers information as an object to be exchanged. Many researchers, including analysts working in information sciences, have adopted this vision of information. However, this approach, which we have termed an object-oriented worldview, masks the contextual nature of information and the processes by which human beings make sense of it. In this paper, we propose an alternative, a subject-oriented worldview of information. In this framework, information is considered from the point of view of actors and takes into consideration the contextual and social nature of information. This approach is described and illustrated through a case study examining the productivity of a newly computerized organization.

Abstract: Intellectual property law and international trading regimes are two salient areas of policy that have a profound impact on the operations of cultural industries such as publishing. This paper reviews the distinctive attributes of seven different forms of intellectual property protection, pointing the way for publishers to expand their thinking about protecting and exploiting their investment in intellectual property, especially in these times of multimedia publishing. It examines the nature of authorship in an historical context paying particular attention to the concept of moral rights. It then discusses the treatment of intellectual property and moral rights within various international trading regimes.
