Perceptions of Factors that Contribute to the Successful Reading Development of Young African American Male Students
The purpose of this qualitative research study was to determine the perceptions of administrators, reading teachers, librarian, and campus reading specialist of the factors that contribute to reading development of African American male students in prekindergarten through third grade. Culturally Responsive Teaching theory was used to frame the perspectives of the participants. A purposive sampling of the participant groups was used. The participants were interviewed, classroom observations were conducted, and field notes were collected. A constant comparative method was used to analyze the data. There were five themes that emerged from the data. The five themes were explicit instruction, differentiating to meet student needs, promoting student engagement, teacher as learner and teacher as supporter. The findings indicated that there are commonalities among the participants relating to their perceptions on the factors that contribute to the reading development of African American male students
Biometrics-based user identification with optimal feature evaluation and selection
Recently, biometrics-based identification algorithms have gained popularity as a means of identifying a person using their unique behavioral characteristics such as gait or hand movement pattern. Classifications based on biometric features are broadly used in modern healthcare applications, including user identification, authentication, and tracking. The complexity and accuracy of classification algorithms largely depend on the size and the quality of the feature set used to build classifiers. In this thesis, we mostly focus on feature evaluation and selection as these are the essential steps to decide a small set of high-quality features to build accurate and efficient classifiers in user identification. We propose a novel and efficient approach to evaluate and select biometric features for user identification based on activity sensor data collected from the users’ wrists while they are walking. For each feature, we first generate an NRMSD matrix, each entry of which represents the similarity level of any two users. Based on the observations from NRMSD matrices, we define two heuristics, Farness Value and Farness Ratio to evaluate the quality of the feature. We evaluated a total of 72 features and selected 18 high-quality features based on our evaluation results. Finally, we train our data with different classifiers and select KNN as the best classification model. Compared to other feature evaluation and selection techniques, this approach is more efficient and yields a higher accuracy of 98.3%
Nekton community characterization of the lower Brazos River with an emphasis on larval Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, trophic dynamics
From December 2016 – October 2017, 50 collections of 150 replicate otter and beam trawls were collected at five different sites, three different seasons, and three different flow tiers along the Brazos river estuary. A total of 96 Atlantic Croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, and 40 particulate organic matter (POM) samples were collected and analyzed for 13C, 15N, and 34S. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) and taxa richness, as well as, Atlantic Croaker CPUE were all significantly greater at collection sites nearest the Gulf of Mexico. Collection sites nearest the Gulf of Mexico also displayed significantly enriched 13C, 34S, and POM 34S levels in Atlantic Croaker tissue (Tables 32 – 33 and 44). The observed patterns in stable isotopes were likely caused by the stratification of the salt wedge caused by variations in freshwater inflow transporting upstream sources of carbon and enriched sources of 13C, 34S derived from tidal transport of marine water and associated sources of carbon and sulfur into the estuary. These findings demonstrate the strong linkage of freshwater inflow, downstream transport of carbon and nitrogen and estuarine productivity
