    Internet of Things devices have permeated the daily lives of many by offering useful insights into their daily lives through the use of sensors and cameras to collect and display real-world data. Increasingly, these devices are the targets of cyber attacks that exploit various protocols essential to their functionality such as Telnet and UPnP. Elasticsearch is a distributed indexing system that allows for the horizontal scaling of coordinated node devices to increase their performance. Elasticsearch, along with its companion software elements Logstash and Kibana, are studied to identify their role in increasing the security of Internet of Things by testing the CallStranger UPnP exploit

    A Framework for Planetary Resource Classifications to Further Sustainability in Space Exploration Missions

    The long-term impacts and overall sustainability of space exploration missions in the space environment were often unknown in past space missions. Historically, the space exploration vision of various space-faring agents refers to "planetary sustainability" as a synonym for mission assurance, rather than as an evaluation of long-term viability or as a means to ensure the sanctity of the space environment. Moreover, past missions have treated the space environment as an infinite frontier and not as a finite resource. NASA's Artemis program aims to return to the moon and achieve sustainable presence in lunarspace by 2028. Many planned future endeavors require resource extraction or in-situ resource utilization efforts. Resource prospecting is considered the first step in accessing resources in the lunarscape. Prospecting is a term utilized most in the mining and extractive industries and, by definition, is a means of experimental drilling and excavation. Prospecting, however, is not the same as classifying. Resource prospecting is more invasive than resource classification, although resource prospecting can advance resource classification efforts. When terrestrial (Earth-based) resources are evaluated on various measures – including availability, recoverability, accessibility – quantifying resource reserve estimates are a part of the evaluation; however, there is no framework established to characterize planetary resources on the basis of mission resource metrics. This investigation develops a framework to classify resources on the lunar surface, in response to the current, heightened interest in resource recovery and utilization in planetary resource-focused missions. Resource and risk classification methods established by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and General Electric will guide framework development. In the process, the investigation considers existing research proposals to establish resource limits and discusses how resource restrictions and risk thresholds are implemented in the final proposed framework. A novel resource classification framework is the final deliverable and is applied to geologic data from lunar fly-by and surface missions, thereby increasing the yield of existing mission data. Additionally, the framework integrates availability, recoverability, and accessibility metrics, while also addressing a composite sustainability metric. These four metrics are established as essential resource classification benchmarks to ensure that sustainable mission design is implemented early in the space systems engineering lifecycle by space systems engineers and mission designers in multidisciplinary teams

    Fractional Fluxon Dynamics in Long Josephson Junctions

    In this thesis, I investigate the dynamics of fractional fluxons in two-gap Long Josephson Junctions (LJJs). Due to time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking within the LJJ, a single fluxon may split into a bound pair of fractional fluxons, behaving as a sort of quasi-molecule. While fractionated, the fluxon pair is bound together by an interaction potential, which is repulsive at short distances, but attractive at longer distances, relatively speaking. In order to induce TRS breaking, an external bias potential and a pinning potential is introduced, representing an external current and a micro-resistance, into the initial equation of motion, the Double Sine-Gordon Equation (DSG). Using a software called freefem++, I simulate a LJJ with experimental parameters that allow for broken TRS, and so has fractional fluxon dynamics. After confirming fractional fluxons were present, I calculate the tunneling rate through the potential barrier for each fluxon. The tunneling rate was found to be in agreement with previous results for a single fluxon for the large fluxon, and not for the smaller fluxon

    Instructional Leader Practices: Are They Related to Student Achievement

    The purpose of this sequential mixed method study was to examine the relationship between the four core leadership principles and student achievement in schools in a small region in Texas. This study included a review of data collected from the School Leadership Survey from a purposeful sample of school principals from schools serviced in the Region V Service Center Area. A purposeful sample of principals from elementary, middle and high schools were also interviewed in an attempt to provide a more in-depth understanding of the potential influence of principal behaviors on student achievement. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and Pearson's product-moment correlations (r), while and inductive coding process was used to analyze the collected qualitative data. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that there was not a statistical mean difference between the four core principles and student achievement, except with managing the instructional program. The qualitative analysis supported the evidence from current research related to the notion that a positive relationship exist between the two constructs

    The Relationship of Grit, Mathematics Self-Efficacy, STEM Career Interest, and Academic Achievement for Middle School Students in Algebra I

    The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between grit, mathematics self-efficacy, students’ career interest in STEM, and student achievement in Algebra I. The study was intentional in examining the concepts of self-efficacy, achievement, and career interest as part of STEM education research. The research was completed during the fall in 2019 with 118 seventh and eighth grade Algebra I students within a large suburban district located in southeast Texas. Students participated in quantitative data collection with the Short Grit Scale, the S-STEM, and individual interviews. All 118 students completed the survey and 11 students participated with individual interviews. Pearson’s Product-Moment correlation (r), structural equation modeling (SEM), and thematic coding were used to analyze the data collected

    Elementary teachers' self-efficacy beliefs related to teaching students displaying externalizing and internalizing behaviors

    The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there is a relationship between teacher-reported self-efficacy beliefs when working with students displaying externalizing and internalizing behaviors and the teacher variables of teaching experience, past number of students taught with externalizing and internalizing disorders, and past training in mental illness. The study also examined the extent to which the teachers’ knowledge and attitudes about mental illness are correlated with their self-efficacy beliefs in working with students displaying externalizing and internalizing behaviors. The participants included 145 elementary school teachers in a school district in Texas. The results of the study showed there to be statistically significant relationships between the teachers ‘knowledge of mental illness in children and the elementary teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs in the classroom management and instructional strategies domains when working with students displaying externalizing and internalizing behaviors. With respect to the relationship between elementary teachers’ attitudes about mental illness in children, and the self-efficacy belief domains, all relationships were small and highly significant except for the instructional strategies domain (correlation was not statistically significant) when working with students displaying externalizing behaviors. The amount of training the participants received in mental illness in children yielded correlations that were small and statistically significant for teachers working with internalizing students in the classroom management and instructional strategies domains. The correlation between teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs when working with students displaying externalizing behaviors and the number of students they had taught with externalizing disorders was small but statistically significant. The correlation of years of experience for participants working with students displaying externalizing behaviors was small, negative, but statistically significant. The same was true for the domain of student engagement, except the correlation was small, negative, and highly significant. These findings suggest the need for ongoing training in classroom management and student engagement techniques for teachers when working with students who display externalizing behaviors, especially for teachers in the later stages of their careers.

    Finding Aid for the Richard Hermlinger Collection, 1959-2013 (#2021-0002)

    Richard Hermling was born February 2, 1943 in Highland Park, Michigan. After his U.S. Air Force enlistment ended, the Richard and Linda Hermlinger moved to Houston, Texas, where Richard got a job working at the NASA Johnson Space Center. He worked long hours at NASA while attending college part-time and completing his engineering degree. Among his many accomplishments while at NASA, Hermlinger was most proud of the fact that in 1967 NASA built a prototype of the Apollo spacesuit for him, which he tested in Chamber A of Building 32 at Johnson Space Center. That spacesuit is now in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. After retiring from NASA, Richard and Linda Hermlinger started and built their own small fledgling company, Southwest Seminars, into a successful nationwide company. Richard Hermlinger passed away on March 20, 2020, in Friendswood, Texas.This collection primarily includes magazines, photographs, journals and reports, directories, periodicals, personal correspondence and documentation of NASA projects, and other materials, from Hermlinger's time working at Johnson Space Center

    Visualizations of Historic and Coastal Flooding Impacts and Solutions

    Flooding is one of the most deadly and costly natural disasters known to humans. While much is done to study the impacts of flooding, not enough is done to inform the public about the dangers of flooding. In a society where information is becoming more readily accessible, there needs to be more ways of informing individuals of the everyday dangers they face. Simple maps and charts, while accurate, do not display enough information at the level needed for people to act. The biggest factor in influencing individuals’ behavior on risk is fear. In recent years, new systems have been developed in specific locations to better inform the community members about the dangers of flooding. Using mobile augmented reality and 3D mapping, a new application was constructed that can be readily used by anyone anywhere. The application was developed using Unity 3D, Vuforia, and Mapbox technologies. The application used historic as well as predictive flooding data to give an individual a greater perspective on their local flooding situations. With the ability to switch between augmented reality and standard mapping an individual can understand the severity of past and future flooding scenarios. The application gave greater insight into the possibility of different flood modeling and visualization systems. It is hoped that with new technologies developed more individuals will be educated and saved from rising flood waters
