    A Mixed-Method Study of the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on U.S. Students’ Educational Attainment

    In this case study, we implemented a quantitative and sentiment analysis of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education, physical, and mental health of college students in the United States. As students are the future workforce of society and play a significant role in the future prosperity of a country, appropriate measures should be taken to minimize the impacts of adverse events on their education and health. As compared to natural disasters, health disasters could have more psychological impacts leading to stress and anxiety, as reflected in their educational performance. This study is based on survey data from students at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. The survey consists of twenty-three questions that ask the students about their experiences during the pandemic of COVID-19. Based on the analyzed data, UHCL students’ attainment is impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The average GPAs of participants show a decreasing trend from Fall 2019 to Fall 2020 and mental health issues might lead to such problems as lacking behind the study. Increased levels of anxiety and nervousness are the most significant influencers on student achievement during the pandemic of COVID-19

    The panel was formed to look at Shuttle abort and separation subsystems. The first meeting included discussions on design philosophy, failure modes, abort trajectory, crew escape, separation schemes, requirements and problems. The panel met a number of times between 1973 and 1976 and this subseries consists of the meeting minutes and presentation charts from those meetings, as well as some related material. We received these files from Mr. Hyle upon his retirement from the NSTS Systems Integration Office. They are organized chronologically

    Reflections of Fear: Mass Hysteria in Cold War Cinema 1946-1991

    The Cold War was one of the longest and most complicated wars in American History. It lasted from 1946-1991 and was entrenched in every person’s life in the United States. It was a time of great fear and suspicion. Americans were living with a heightened anxiety that was reflected in the movies of the time, starting in the 1950’s with the fear of Communism right to the 1980’s with the fear of World War III and a post-apocalyptic world. This thesis will look at how these fears were reflected in the movies that were being produced. I will first look at the 1950’s with the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers as a reflection of the mass fear or hysteria regarding the infiltration of communism into America stirred by the McCarthy trials of the 1950’s. I will look at the 1960’s with the fear of Mutually Assured Destruction reflected in Dr Strangelove, or How I learned to Love the Bomb. The 1970’s were different in terms of Cold War fears: this was a time where President Richard Nixon was engaged in Détente and relations with China and the Soviet Union improved. The 1970’s was also a major time of economic crisis in the United States: the energy crisis so many Americans feared replaced the Cold War in importance. This fear picks up again with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and his hard stance against the Soviet Union. Many people in the United States were fearful of World War III and having to live in a post-apocalyptic world; these concerns are reflected in the films The Day After and Wargames. All four of these films together paint a picture of the real fears that led to the mass hysteria regarding the Cold War

    Exploiting Area-Speed-Power Tradeoff of FPGA Designs on Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) Neural Network

    This dissertation presents four Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) design architectures for handwritten digit recognition, in order to improve hardware efficiency in terms of resources, power, and speed of the neuromorphic processor. Multipliers are used as the basis for each of the processor designs. Additional methods are explored to compare hardware efficiency with implementing floating point adders and multipliers in register-transfer level (RTL) designs. These implementations are then instantiated into each of the processor designs and the results are compared to the IPs-based demonstrations using Xilinx Vivado. Experimental results show that the 196-MUL design architecture achieves the highest speed but consumes a large amount of power and FPGA resource including look-up Tables (LUTs), flip-flops (FFs), and digital signal processing elements (DSPs). In contrast, the 28-MUL design architecture spends the minimum LUTs, FFs, DSPs, and power dissipation, however, the latency is greater than 3× compared with the hardware cost of the 196-muliplier structure. The conclusion of the dissertation is that the proposed works offer different levels of hardware efficiency corresponding to different design specifications. The proposed designs allows for the user to choose which aspect is important to them in regards to area, power, and speed and then specialize the system to their needs

    Examining Student Achievement Factors and Post-Secondary Readiness

    The purpose of this sequential mixed methods study was to examine the relationship among student achievement factors, gifted and talented status and post-secondary readiness. The study included a review of archived data obtained from a large district in the southeastern region of Texas consisting of a purposeful sample of AP students’ who took an Advanced Placement exam in AP English and/or AP Calculus AB in the spring of 2019. A purposeful sample of 10 AP teachers were also interviewed in an attempt to provide a more in-depth understanding of the impact student achievement factors, gifted and talented status had on post-secondary readiness. Results indicated that there was a positive correlation between: (a) overall high school GPA and post-secondary readiness, (b) PSAT scores in reading and mathematics and post-secondary readiness, (c) STAAR EOC scores in English II and Algebra I and post-secondary readiness, and (d) gifted and talented status and post-secondary readiness in English. On the other hand, the results did not indicate a positive correlation between gifted and talented status and post-secondary readiness in mathematics. Although, the majority of AP teachers agreed student achievement factors could be good indicators of students’ ability to grasp the content there was no agreement on which factors provided the best indication. The majority of AP teachers agreed GPA showed a students’ grit and self-regulation but could be misconducted due to weighted GPA. On the other hand, the majority of AP teachers did not support the use of standardized test scores as a valid indicator for post-secondary readiness. AP teachers also expressed mixed feelings about gifted and talented status and post-secondary readiness which was mainly due to GT students’ lack of motivation and lack of reevaluation process

    Tradeoff FPGA Cost of Sobel Implementation Using Approximate Designs

    This dissertation proposes a scalable algorithm for tuning the tradeoff of space, energy, and quality for the implementation on Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). First, an approximate design library including exact and several imprecise designs on adders and subtractors is presented. Using the design library, then six different approximation levels of register-transfer level (RTL) designs on a Sobel edge detection algorithm is created as a case study, in order to demonstrate the advantage of approximate design and develop a specific implementation to save energy and space at the cost of accuracy. Finally, all the designs of the Sobel engine are synthesized in Xilinx Vivado where the comparison between exact design and an array of approximate designs are conducted. Experimental results show that our proposed work achieves the maximum savings of 26% energy, 24% slice count, and 21% of look-up tables (LUTs) at the cost of 1.14% accuracy when images are compared pixel by pixel. In order to further explore the difference between FPGA demonstrations of the exact design and imprecise implementations, all the Sobel cores are integrated with an image processing platform including OV7670 camera, VGA-enabled monitor, and Xilinx Nexys 4 FPGA to show the quality of edge detection images. By integrating the designs of I2C controller, image capture interface, and the VGA master with our proposed Sobel engines, the simulation with Mentor Graphic ModelSim proves the validity of our proposed work

    Role of Negative Personality on Sleep Quality and Emotion Regulation

    The relationship between sleep and emotion regulation has been well-established. Worsened sleep quality is associated with a diminished ability to regulate emotions. However, research has yet to examine potential mediators. This study aims to determine if the personality traits of the dark triad mediate this relationship. To test the hypothesis, an online survey was distributed to UHCL students and the general public. Participants answered questions regarding their sleep, ability to regulate emotions, personality, and demographics. Responses were analyzed using mediation analyses. The results showed that only psychopathy significantly mediated this relationship. Worsened sleep quality, mediated by higher ratings of psychopathy, results in a lessened ability to regulate emotions. These results allow for an improved ability to develop comprehensive treatments for poor sleep or emotion dysregulation
