Inventory of Jack C. Boykin Documents Shuttle/Centaur, Pris Materials
Get PDFThis subseries contains materials related to the Shuttle/Centaur integration project for high orbit and interplanetary missions. This project was cancelled in the mid 1980's, so the majority of the documents on Shuttle/Centaur date from 1983-1986. The Payload Remote Integration System (PRIS) was built to support Orbiter/Centaur Phase II and Phase III verification tests by providing a transparent interface between the Test Operations Control Center and the remotely located Centaur/Centaur simulator. These materials date from 1984-1985. The provenance of these documents is Jack C. Boykin, who worked in the Shuttle Avionics Office during this time period. Most of the materials, therefore, deal with the software development and integration of the Shuttle/Centaur project. This collection should be used together with the Shuttle/Centaur and Vandenberg Launch Site (VLS) collection, since the S/C materials there date from 1980-1984 and were compiled by a different shuttle division. The collection originally arrived as a number of labeled folders interspersed with loose papers and documents. The chronological arrangement of the collection was chosen for organizational purposes. A number of materials were culled due to duplicate copies. This included some volumes of STS 83-1036, which can be found in its entirety in the S/C and VLS collection. A sizeable number of Shuttle/Centaur Functional Requirements Documents (FRD's) were found throughout the collection. These have been grouped together and arranged chronologically in boxes 10-11
The Influence of Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health
No full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social media on adolescent mental health. The study was intentional in examining the effects of social media usage on depression, self-esteem, and academic achievement. The research was completed during the fall and spring of 2020 and 2021 with 136 ninth grade students within a large suburban district located in southeast Texas. Students participated in quantitative data collection with the PEW Internet Research Survey, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and qualitative data collection in individual interviews. All 136 students completed the surveys and 9 students participated with individual interviews. Frequencies and Percentages, the Chi-Square Test of Independence, the one way ANOVA, and thematic coding were used to analyze the data collected
Supports and challenges experienced by Black African immigrant undergraduate students bridging their home and school cultures
No full textThe purpose of this study was to examine lived experiences of first and second generation Black African immigrant undergraduate students in regard to self-identification and education achievement and to explore the support that these students need for a smooth bridging of cultural differences between their homes and school. The data were collected through responses from semi-structured interviews of thirteen student participants. Through the careful coding of the interview data, the researcher analyzed the emergent themes and sub themes from the participants. The findings show that self-identification is fluid among immigrant students as they try to maintain their original identification and at the same time want to identify with the host country. All participants cited education as most important and a ladder for social advancement. Participants appreciated support from their parents, helpful professors, and friends. However, the data revealed that parental support can sometimes be problematic when parents try to dictate what career path their children should pursue.

No full textA Shuttle payload, the Galileo spacecraft was to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the Jupiter planetary system. The prime source of electric power for Galileo was a nuclear power source called the radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). Because a nuclear device was to fly on a Shuttle mission, in depth safety analyses were required. This subseries of documents contains those safety analysis reports. These documents were received from the NSTS Program Office (GA) and have been organized chronologically. The dates range from 1984 to 1988
Inventory of CANEX Payload Documents
No full textIntegration Attached Payloads Office. They consist of the case files for the Canadian Experiment Package which flew on STS 41-G in October 1984. This was a crew compartment payload consisting of the following experiments. A Space Technology experiment, VISET, the Space Vision System Experiment Development Tests, had as primary objectives the calibration of closed circuit TV and Canadian target system combinations as well as the collection of annotated video on target maneuvers. ACOMEX, Advanced Composite Material Exposure, was another space technology experiment. This one looked at the degradation of polymers in the orbiter environment and was similar to some experiments on the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility). Space science experiments included OGLOW, SPEAM and PHOTONS. OGLOW, Orbital Glow and Atmospheric Emissions took spectral readings and measured the intensity of orbiter and earth's limb emissions. SPEAM was the Sun Photometer Earth Atmosphere Measurements and PHOTONS was the Photometric Thermospheric Oxygen Nightglow Study. A Life Sciences experiment, SASSE (Space Adaptation Syndrome Supplemental Experiments), expanded the available data on vestibulo-ocular reflex, awareness of object positions, proprioceptive illusions, limb sensory functions, and space motion sickness. Because this collection represents a good snapshot of payload management activities very little was done to change the organization of the documents. The collection has been maintained in its original file folders with keywords and date ranges noted. Original folder titles are in bold type on the inventory. The folders are filed chronologically by the latest date on the folder. Materials within the folders are filed chronologically from earliest to latest date with undated material at the end of the folder. Dates range from February 1984 through February 1986
The area that continues to be unaddressed in public-schools: Teacher bias in the EC-12 setting
No full textThe purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between a teacher’s level of implicit and explicit bias, as well as teacher perceptions of the role bias plays in the school setting. A purposeful sample of Black, Hispanic, and White public-school teachers in a large region of southeast Texas was solicited to complete the race Implicit Association Test (IAT) and the RIVEC Prejudice Scale. The survey data were analyzed using a correlation and analysis of variances while the qualitative data were analyzed using an inductive coding process. The quantitative findings indicated that the Hispanic and White participants have a higher implicit bias against Black people than the Black participants did against White people. In contrast, all three racial groups, on average, held the same level of explicit bias. A teacher’s years of experience had no effect on the level of bias a teacher possesses. The qualitative portion of this study identified the following themes related to bias and the role bias plays in the school setting: (a) implicit bias reactions, (b) explicit bias reactions, (c) lack of preparation and professional development, (d) bias in the academic setting, and (e) bias in discipline practices

The majority of the documents are from 1974 to 1978 and consist of memos and presentations, as well as a number of JSC documents. The provenance of this collection appears to be Duane Mosel of CG5, the Orbit and Rendezvous Planning Section of the Crew Training and Procedures Division, Flight Operations Directorate. The collection has been arranged chronologically. The March 6, 1978 memo from Maxime Faget is of special interest. The Docking and Rendezvous Documents in the Center Series should be used in connection with this collection
Inventory of STS-51-L Investigation Documents
No full textThe Data Design and Analysis Task Force was established within NASA on February 5, 1986, to support the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger STS-51-L accident (Rogers Commission). The Task Force grew out of the Interim Mishap Investigation Board appointed by NASA Headquarters Office of Manned Space Flight and approved by the acting NASA administrator on January 29, 1986. After the Presidential Commission was appointed, the board was re-named and re-oriented to support the Commission. These papers are primarily those of the Mission Planning and Operations Team (MPOT) of the Data, Design and Analysis Task Force. This team supported the Rogers Commission's Mission Planning and Operations Panel. The records are arranged basically in chronological order within four subject areas. The first group are background documents which pre-date the accident (or are undated) and include requirements, reviews and background information on the flight. The second group consists of presentations and reports that were, for the most part, responses to MPOT requests for information on Commission assigned action items. The third group of documents are correspondence, notes, and miscellaneous material including 51-L impact documents, commission information, team charter, action items lists, etc.. Finally there are Task Force / MPOT generated reports to the Commission, lessons learned, and the task force historical summary. The subseries consists of 2 1/2 linear feet of presentations, reports, and correspondence, most of which were created between January and March 1986. However, the dates run from May 1977 through June 1986
