Analyzing Parental Language Attitudes Toward Cantonese, Mandarin and English in Guangdong, China

    No full text
Cantonese is the cultural marker of Guangdong, which is also the center of Yue culture. With the economic development of Guangdong, Mandarin and English are becoming popular and necessary for people. This study investigated parents’ language attitudes towards Cantonese, Mandarin, and English in Guangdong, China. In this study, four research questions were answered: what factors affect parents’ language attitudes toward Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, how essential parents think Cantonese, Mandarin, and English are, and how valuable parents think Cantonese, Mandarin, and English are. The participants were asked to complete a survey about their language attitudes toward Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. The three factors of language attitudes are The Impact of Official Language-Mandarin, The Impact of Language Identity, and The Impact of Unofficial Language-Cantonese and English. The results indicate that Mandarin is the most important and the most useful language for the participants. Additionally, the participants indicated that they speak Mandarin more often than the other two languages in the public domain. English is the second most essential and valuable language for the participants; however, the participants rarely speak English at home or in public areas. Even though parents use Cantonese more frequently than Mandarin and English at home, they rated Cantonese as the lowest in terms of its importance and usefulness. This study also investigated how the factors of gender, age, occupation and education level affect language attitudes. According to the results, gender, age and education level have great influences on three factors of language attitudes, but occupation only has impact on The Impact of Language Identity. This thesis discussed and explained in details of all results

This accession of Rockwell Downey Documents was collected in the History Office over a period of 10 years in preparation for and as source documents to be used in the writing of a Shuttle Chronology. Included are Shuttle Phase A and Phase B documents (early Shuttle concept design contracts) from the late 1960s and early 1970s as well as NAS9-14000 (Shuttle design and development contract) reports and presentation material dated through 1992. An addenda beginning in Box 85 includes additional Rockwell materials received primarily from PDC (Program Document Center) before its integration with the Scientific & Technical Information Center. The date range of the addenda is 1970 through 1989. The subseries is arranged in chronological order and contained in 91 archival manuscript boxes

Breastfeeding in the social context: The influence of stereotypes and benevolent sexism

    Get PDF
Despite providing numerous benefits for both mothers and babies, breastfeeding remains a non-normative means of infant feeding among mothers in the United States. Past research suggests that many women face social obstacles to breastfeeding, such as being too uncomfortable to breastfeed in public, which may hinder the duration of breastfeeding. In a pair of studies, the role of sexism, perception of gendered characteristics, and attitudes toward mothers who breastfeed in private and public were examined. In Study 1, 89 women viewed photos of a woman breastfeeding in a private location, public location while using a cover, or public location without a cover. The participants were then asked to indicate the level of communal and agentic characteristics the target possessed, as well as their attitudes toward her. While no differences in positive attitudes were found between the conditions, participants in the private condition perceived the woman as possessing a higher level of communal characteristics relative to the other groups. Moreover, participants in the public-not covered condition perceived the target at possessing more agentic characteristics than the other groups. In Study 2, 96 mothers were grouped based on their self-reported frequency of engagement in breastfeeding behaviors by location (private, public-covered, public-not covered, and no breastfeeding), and rated their own levels of communal and agentic characteristics. Woman who did not breastfeed at all were found to associate themselves with lower levels of communal characteristics compared to women who breastfed in all locations (private and public). Additionally, women were found to have the most positive attitudes toward the type of location in which they themselves engaged in breastfeeding. Armed with this knowledge, advocates and professionals alike will be more equipped to address these issues, which will ultimately lead to them being more successful in providing support to women for the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding their infants

They were collected over a number of years from various sources and are arranged chronologically. Two addenda have been added to the collection and each is arranged chronologically. The dates of addenda I (beginning in box 48) documents range from 1969 to 1991 and of particular interest are the Flight Operation Manuals. The dates of addenda II (beginning in box 64) range from 1981-1986 and are primarily payload integration plans

Hispanic males and the factors contributing to their decisions to pursue and complete a college education

    Get PDF
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of Hispanic male students who have made plans to pursue and complete a college education. This study used two theoretical frameworks to enhance the understanding of the events that might lead Hispanic males to pursue a college education. The theoretical frameworks guiding this study are Bandura’s (1977) social-cognitive theory and Vygotsky’s (1978) socio-cultural constructivism theory. The research questions that guided the study were, a) What is the perceived importance of a college education to undergraduate, traditional and nontraditional-aged, Hispanic males enrolled in higher education? b) What perceptions do Hispanic males have about the impact of their lived experiences both within and external to the academic environment on their pursuit of a college education? and c) What perceptions do university staff have about Hispanic males seeking a higher education, and what they must do in order to achieve a university degree? A purposeful sample of the groups of participants, Hispanic male students and university staff were interviewed, and field notes were collected in order to provide a more in-depth understanding of the specific factors that affect the academic success of Hispanic males and their decisions to pursue and complete a college education. A constant comparative method was utilized to analyze the data. Conceptual categories emerged from the data analysis and these categories were then sorted into four emergent themes. The four emergent themes were a) support systems for Hispanic male students; b) unspoken cultural expectations; c) the feeling of “belonging” and d) perseverance, hope, and grit. The findings indicated that there were similarities among the participants in regard to the four emergent themes. The findings also showed a dissonance between what the Hispanic male participants experienced and what the university staff believed was going on in the university life of the Hispanic male students
