Examining the Impact of an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Grant at a Four Year University
This study presents a comparative analysis to measure the effect of a special program designed to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among Hispanic students at a Hispanic Serving Institution in Texas. In this study, it was hypothesized that the special program would deliver positive academic effects for the students that it was designed to help.
The study used a matched-group approach to identify two groups of Hispanic students with similar profiles for an equivalent and direct comparison. The first group consists of Hispanic students majoring in STEM areas who participated in the special program. The second group of consists of the same number of Hispanic students, also majoring in STEM areas, but who did not participate in the special program. A total of 380 students were identified, with 190 students for each group from a university in Texas that has a population of 6,500 undergraduate students, of which 2,600 were Hispanics.
The academic performance of the two Hispanic groups in the study is measured with the cumulative GPA of the students during the study period spanning from the inception of the program up to the most recent year that the data are available. This period consists of the calendar years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The study used the mean difference methodology to compare the academic performance of the two groups in general and in specific demographic subgroups for a cross-sectional analysis. Additionally, repeated measures analysis of variance was used to examine the effects along the time span of the study in a traversal analysis
Inventory of Documents of Peripheral Importance to Shuttle
The contents of this subseries were collected by the authors of the Shuttle Chronology. Although not directly related to the Shuttle program, they offer some background information helpful to place the program in context
Inventory of STS-41-B Mission Documents
This subseries consists of material related to the STS 41-B mission and includes mission reports, press information, air to ground transcripts, and more. Most information is in hard copy but microfiche of air to ground transcripts and press briefings are also included. The material is contained in two manuscript boxes and arranged chronologically
The Dynamics That Exist Among Teacher Preparation Programs, Student Achievement, and Teacher Performance
The purpose of this research study was to examine the dynamics that exist among the teacher preparation program (TPP), student achievement, and teacher performance. This study included a review of data collected from archived data derived from the
Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), the State of Texas Assessment of Academic
Readiness (STAAR) for grades 3-11, as well as the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) evaluation data from a purposeful sample of 233 teachers employed at a school district located in Southeast Texas. A purposeful sample of 10 teachers who earned their teaching credentials via either a traditional teacher preparation program or an Alternative Certification Program (ACP) were also interviewed to provide more in-depth understanding of the dynamics that exist among the preparation programs, student achievement, and the teachers’ classroom performance. Findings indicated there was not a statistically significant mean difference in student achievement and teacher performance in terms of the type of teacher preparation program. On the other hand, findings suggested teacher performance ratings have a statistically significant influence on student reading achievement and teacher performance did moderate the relationship between the type of teacher preparation and student achievement. Teachers also reported that completing relevant coursework and actual teaching experiences encountered during their teacher preparedness, interest in the teaching profession, and issues with teacher performance evaluation contributed to their performance ratings and student achievement
Inventory of Dwight Suiter Documents Lightening/Thunderstorm Research for Space Shuttle Launch Criteria
This subseries consists of collected materials on the effects of lightning on electronic and electrical systems, how lightning affects aircraft, and thus protective measures needed and launch criteria developed concerning the space shuttle. The concern towards thunderstorms in general and lightning in particular was generated by the frequency of both in the vicinity of Kennedy Space Center, and by the numerous lightning strikes near and on Apollo rockets and their launch facilities in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The provenance of this material is Dwight Suiter, who was employed at JSC from 1964-1991 and was a member of the Lightning Committee that investigated the aforementioned phenomena and whose goal was to develop the necessary precautions and procedures for similar occurrences with the space shuttle.
Mr. Suiter worked in a number of capacities in the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office, Program Operations Office, Shuttle Office, and Orbiter and GFE Projects Office. The materials received were arranged haphazardly, and while some subject areas were noticed, it was decided that some order needed to be imposed. Various Apollo documents were grouped together at the beginning of the collection, followed by important shuttle papers generated by the Lightning Committee, all arranged chronologically from 1963-1984. Subject areas that were obvious or became obvious during processing were placed next in the collection. They are: 1) Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR) papers, 2) Lightning Susceptibility Analysis Summaries, 3) Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) papers, 4) OMS Pod materials, and 5) materials related to Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Each subject area has been arranged chronologically. Various personal papers by Mr. Suiter that did not fit into any particular subject area were placed next, arranged in chronological order. Finally, a large number of articles, papers, and documents related to lightning and its effects were interspersed throughout and are arranged chronologically at the end of the collection
Inventory of Phase C/D SEB Viewgraphs
This subseries contains all the viewgraphs used by the SEB in their score compilation and in their presentation to the NASA Administrator (July 17-18, 1972) as well as viewgraphs used by Grumman, Lockheed, and McDonnell Douglas in their oral presentations to the source evaluation board on June 7-8, 1972. The first group is the SEB presentation material. The folders are organized according to the presentation agenda as shown on the master cue sheet in the first folder. The charts within each folder are organized numerically. Following the SEB presentation charts are the SEB scoring charts. The contractor charts follow and are organized numerically within each contractor section
Inventory of STS-3 Mission Documents
This subseries is a collection of documents related to STS-3 and arranged in chronological order. They include press information, flight rules, and mission reports
Exploring potential correlates of student support service utilization, disclosure, adjustment, and fit among postsecondary students with neurodevelopmental disorders
This study examined campus-based student support service utilization and potential relationships among attitudes and perceptions related to support service utilization among current University of Houston-Clear Lake students with at least one neurodevelopmental condition (NDD). Participants (n = 34) provided information about personal characteristics, service use, service needs, and perceived barriers to service use, as well as attitudes toward neurodevelopmental diagnosis disclosure, attitudes toward adjustment to college, and perceptions of academic fit. Results indicated that perceptions of adjustment to college and academic fit may be a particularly salient aspect of postsecondary experiences among students with NDD. In addition, perceptions of specific barriers to student support service use may be closely related to attitudes about adjustment to college and academic fit
Inventory of Flight Director's Logs
This subseries contains the Flight Director's Logs and consists of mission reports, anomaly logs, press information, flight reviews, presentations, and correspondance. These files have been maintained essentially in the order in which they were received not chronologically or as flown. Earlier Flight Director's Logs have been integrated into mission documents. See STS-1 thru STS-41 inventories. In cases where documents in the Flight Logs duplicate those in other subseries we have retained title page covers only and have added location information for the full text document. Dates range are from 1983 to 1985
Inventory of STS-1 Mission Documents
This subseries consists of chronologically-arranged mission related documents for STS-1, which include fact sheets, press information, mission reports, and more
