A revision of Ilyobates Kraatz, 1856 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae, Oxypodini).
I. nigricollis (Paykull) = I. haroldi Ihssen, = I. nigricollis deubeli Bernhauer, syn. n., = I. hoelzeli Scheerpeltz, syn. n.; I. bennetti Donisthorpe = I. subopacus Palm; I. propinquus (Aubé) = I. rufus Kraatz; I. mech (Baudi) = I. hustachei Méquignon, syn. n., = I. pseudomech Lohse, syn. n., = Calodera sulcicollis Aubé; Pyroglossa Bernhauer = Gennadota Casey, syn. n. Für I. haroldi Ihssen, I. nigricollis deubeli Bernhauer, I. subopacus Palm, Calodera sulcicollis Aubé und I. rufus Kraatz werden Lectotypen designiert. StichwörterColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae, Oxypodini, Ilyobates, Pyroglossa, Gennadota, Palaearctic region, Europe, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, intraspecific variation, life history, new species, new synonymy, new combination, lectotype designation.Nomenklatorische Handlungenharoldi Ihssen, 1934 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)hölzeli Scheerpeltz, 1947 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)hustachi Méquignon, 1933 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates mech (Baudi, 1848)mirabillis Assing, 1999 (Ilyobates), spec. n.pseudomech Lohse, 1994 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates mech (Baudi, 1848)rufus Kraatz, 1856 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates propinquus (Aubé, 1850)subopacus Palm, 1935 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates bennetti Donisthorpe, 1914deubeli Bernhauer, 1902 (Ilyobates nigricollis), syn. n. of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)canadensis (Casey, 1906) (Pyroglossa), comb. n. hitherto Gennadota canadensispuberula (Casey, 1893) (Pyroglossa), comb. n. hitherto Callicerus puberulusThe types and additional material of the species of Ilyobates Kraatz are revised. Six valid species are recognized: I. nigricollis (Paykull), I. bennetti Donisthorpe, I. propinquus (Aubé), I. mech (Baudi), I. merkli Eppelsheim, and I. mirabilis sp. n. The following synonymies are established or confirmed, respectively: I. nigricollis (Paykull) = I. haroldi Ihssen, = I. nigricollis deubeli Bernhauer, syn. n., = I. hoelzeli Scheerpeltz, syn. n.; I. bennetti Donisthorpe = I. subopacus Palm; I. propinquus (Aubé) = I. rufus Kraatz; I. mech (Baudi) = I. hustachei Méquignon, syn. n., = I. pseudomech Lohse, syn. n., = Calodera sulcicollis Aubé; Pyroglossa Bernhauer = Gennadota Casey, syn. n. Lectotypes are designated for I. haroldi Ihssen, I. nigricollis deubeli Bernhauer, I. subopacus Palm, Calodera sulcicollis Aubé, and I. rufus Kraatz. Callicerus puberulus Casey and Gennadota canadensis Casey, two North American species previously attributed to Ilyobates, are transferred to Pyroglossa Bernhauer. The taxonomic history of Ilyobates is outlined. The diagnoses of the genus and of the species are complemented by a key and by figures of the mouthparts, primary and secondary sexual characters, and further distinguishing characters. The biogeographical data available suggest that all the species of Ilyobates are Pontomediterranean faunal elements. Based on measurements of various body parts, intraspecific morphological variation is assessed and found to be enormous. As can be concluded from field studies and collection data, species of Ilyobates are monovoltine, with reproduction taking place in spring and summer. The adult beetles overwinter in a cryptic habitat. The life histories and possible explanations for the pronounced intraspecific variation of the species of Ilyobates are discussed.KeywordsColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae, Oxypodini, Ilyobates, Pyroglossa, Gennadota, Palaearctic region, Europe, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, intraspecific variation, life history, new species, new synonymy, new combination, lectotype designation.Nomenclatural Actsharoldi Ihssen, 1934 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)hölzeli Scheerpeltz, 1947 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)hustachi Méquignon, 1933 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates mech (Baudi, 1848)mirabillis Assing, 1999 (Ilyobates), spec. n.pseudomech Lohse, 1994 (Ilyobates), syn. n. of Ilyobates mech (Baudi, 1848)rufus Kraatz, 1856 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates propinquus (Aubé, 1850)subopacus Palm, 1935 (Ilyobates), Lectotype now a synonym of Ilyobates bennetti Donisthorpe, 1914deubeli Bernhauer, 1902 (Ilyobates nigricollis), syn. n. of Ilyobates nigricollis (Paykull, 1800)canadensis (Casey, 1906) (Pyroglossa), comb. n. hitherto Gennadota canadensispuberula (Casey, 1893) (Pyroglossa), comb. n. hitherto Callicerus puberulu

Change of species set and abundance along a short time gradient: The impact of weather conditions on the conservation of butterflies.
StichwörterButterfly monitoring, species set, impact of weather conditions, Germany, nature conservation. In a species-poor region of a low-mountain area of Nordrhein-Westfalen (Germany) a butterfly monitoring scheme that was started in 1989-1991 and repeated in 1997 revealed changes in the species set and the frequency (abundance) of several species. In line with previous studies the impact of weather conditions on butterfly occurrence and frequency is discussed.
As regards the nine-year period from 1987-1995 weather conditions in the study area have become more favourable since 1989. An increase in the average monthly temperatures and the monthly amount of sunshine and a decrease in monthly rainfall was mainly recorded between 1989 and 1992. The increase was observed during the main flight period (April to September) as well as between October and March (possibly relevant for juvenile stages of several species).
Several xerothermophilous species never before recorded in the study area were found to have immigrated. Other species which had vanished during the last thirty years have notably recovered, although landscape structure and habitat conditions have remained basically unchanged. - The importance of favourable weather conditions for the immigration and recovery of rare or endangered species is discussed and compared to the effects of conservation management.KeywordsButterfly monitoring, species set, impact of weather conditions, Germany, nature conservation
A revision of Othius Stephens, 1829. VII. The species of the Eastern Palaearctic region east of the Himalayas (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae).
Die folgenden Taxa werden neu synonymisiert: O. medius Sharp = O. medius kusuii Ito, syn. n., = O. medius yakushimanus Ito, syn. n.; O. rosti Bernhauer = O. ussuriensis Coiffait, syn. n.; O. latus Sharp = O. stoetzneri Bernhauer, syn. n., = O. chongqingensis Zheng, syn. n., = O. latus ozakii Ito, syn. n.; O. punctatus Bernhauer = O. arisanus (Shibata), syn. n. (China), O. latus gansuensis ssp. n. (China: Gansu), O. atavus sp. n. (China: Yunnan), O. lubricus sp. n. (China: Yunnan), O. discrepans sp. n. (China: Sichuan), O. excisus sp. n. (China: Sichuan), O. sculptipennis sp. n. (China: Sichuan), O. tuberipennis sp. n. (China: Yunnan), O. fibulifer sp. n. (China: Sichuan), O. wrasei sp. n. (China: Sichuan), O. smetanai sp. n. (Taiwan), O. contumax sp. n. (Taiwan) und O. coniceps sp. n. (Taiwan). StichwörterColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Xantholininae, Othiini, Othius, Eastern Palaearctic, Taiwan, China, Japan, distribution, ecology, taxonomy, revision, new species, lectotype designation, new synonyms.Nomenklatorische Handlungenarisanus Shibata, 1973 (Othiellus), syn. n. of Othius punctatus Bernhauer, 1922 (nom. n. pro puncticeps Bernhauer, 1916)acutus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.aequabilis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.atavus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.bordonii Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.chongquingensis Zheng, 1995 (Othius), syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874collapsus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.coniceps Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.contumax Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.discrepans Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.excisus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.fibulifer Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.hamatus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.lubricus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.medius Sharp, 1874 (Othius), Lectotypepraecisus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.reticulatus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.rosti Bernhauer, 1907 (Othius), Lectotyperufipennis Sharp, 1874 (Othius), Lectotypesculptipennis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.smetanai Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.stötzneri Bernhauer, 1931 (Othius), Lectotype; syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874tuberipennis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. nov.ussuriensis Coiffait, 1974 (Othius), syn. n. of Othius rosti Bernhauer, 1907wrasei Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.gansuensis Assing, 1999 (Othius latus), sspec. n.ozakii Ito, 1993 (Othius latus), syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874kusuii Ito, 1993 (Othius medius), syn. n. of Othius medius Sharp, 1874yakushimanus Ito, 1993 (Othius medius), syn. n. of Othius medius Sharp, 1874Types and additional material of Othius from the Eastern Palaearctic region east of the Himalayas as well as from southern China and Taiwan are revised. 31 valid species and 2 subspecies are recognized; the identity of a further 3 species, whose types were not made available, remains dubious. The following new synonymies are established: O. medius Sharp = O. medius kusuii Ito, syn. n., = O. medius yakushimanus Ito, syn. n.; O. rosti Bernhauer = O. ussuriensis Coiffait, syn. n.; O. latus Sharp = O. stoetzneri Bernhauer, syn. n., = O. chongqingensis Zheng, syn. n., = O. latus ozakii Ito, syn. n.; O. punctatus Bernhauer = O. arisanus (Shibata), syn. n. Lectotypes are designated for O. medius Sharp, O. rosti Bernhauer, O. stoetzneri Bernhauer, and O. rufipennis Sharp. 19 new species and one new subspecies are described: O. bordonii sp. n. (Taiwan), O. contumax sp. n. (Taiwan), and O. coniceps sp. n. (Taiwan). Comparative diagnoses are given for the species and subspecies treated and complemented by comments on phylogenetic relationships; revised biogeographical and the available bionomical data are compiled. The primary and secondary sexual characters are figured; for several species, the distribution and intraspecific morphological variation are illustrated. A diagnostic key is presented for the Othius species of the Eastern Palaearctic region east of the Himalayas. There is some evidence that both the Western Palaearctic and the Eastern Palaearctic species of Othius are monophyla; the former is distributed west and the latter east of the Caspian Sea, the only exception being the Western Himalayan O. kashmirica subgroup, which is closely related to the Western Palaearctic O. laeviusculus group. In the region east of the Himalayas, species diversity is highest in Yunnan and Sichuan (mainland China), and in Taiwan. The phylogenetics of the Taiwanese species are discussed, and conclusions regarding the colonization of the island are presented.KeywordsColeoptera, Staphylinidae, Xantholininae, Othiini, Othius, Eastern Palaearctic, Taiwan, China, Japan, distribution, ecology, taxonomy, revision, new species, lectotype designation, new synonyms.Nomenclatural Actsarisanus Shibata, 1973 (Othiellus), syn. n. of Othius punctatus Bernhauer, 1922 (nom. n. pro puncticeps Bernhauer, 1916)acutus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.aequabilis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.atavus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.bordonii Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.chongquingensis Zheng, 1995 (Othius), syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874collapsus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.coniceps Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.contumax Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.discrepans Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.excisus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.fibulifer Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.hamatus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.lubricus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.medius Sharp, 1874 (Othius), Lectotypepraecisus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.reticulatus Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.rosti Bernhauer, 1907 (Othius), Lectotyperufipennis Sharp, 1874 (Othius), Lectotypesculptipennis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.smetanai Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.stötzneri Bernhauer, 1931 (Othius), Lectotype; syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874tuberipennis Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. nov.ussuriensis Coiffait, 1974 (Othius), syn. n. of Othius rosti Bernhauer, 1907wrasei Assing, 1999 (Othius), spec. n.gansuensis Assing, 1999 (Othius latus), sspec. n.ozakii Ito, 1993 (Othius latus), syn. n. of Othius latus latus Sharp, 1874kusuii Ito, 1993 (Othius medius), syn. n. of Othius medius Sharp, 1874yakushimanus Ito, 1993 (Othius medius), syn. n. of Othius medius Sharp, 187
Two new species of Leptothorax 'Nesomyrmex' fossils in Dominican amber (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
Nomenklatorische Handlungencaritatis Andrade et al., 1999 (Leptothorax), spec. n.dominicanus Andrade et al., 1999 (Leptothoraxs), spec. n.Two new fossil species of Neotropical Leptothorax \u27Nesomyrmex\u27 are described from Dominican amber (probably Miocene). [Montenegro], E. behnei sp. n. [Makedonien], E. pseudovariegata sp. n. [Kreta, Rhodos], E. ingowolfi sp. n. [Griechenland: Astakós], E. roudieri sp. n. [Spanien: Alicante], E. brisouti peneckei ssp. n. [Dalmatien]. Weitere 9 Arten werden redeskribiert: Echinodera variegata (Boheman, 1837), E. horridula (Reitter, 1888), E. major (A. & F. Solari, 1907), E. capiomonti (Brisout, 1864), E. brisouti (Reitter, 1885), E. valida (Hampe, 1864), E. peragalloi (Chevrolat, 1863), E. merkli (Meyer, 1896), E. ochsi (F. Solari, 1952). StichwörterSouth Europe, taxonomy, Curculionidae, Cryptorhynchinae, Echinodera, Ruteria, new subgenera, new species, designation of lectotypes, identification key.Nomenklatorische HandlungenRuteria Roudier, 1954 (Curculionidae), stat. rev. hitherto a subgenus of Echinodera Wollaston, 1864Dieckmannia Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera), sgen. n.brisouti (Reitter, 1885) (Echinodera (Dieckmannia)), Lectotype described as Acalles brisoutimerkli (Meyer, 1896) (Echinodera (Dieckmannia)), Lectotype described as Acalles merkliroudieri Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Dieckmannia)), spec. n.peneckei Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Dieckmannia) brisouti), sspec. n.behnei Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Echinodera)), spec. n.horridula (Reitter, 1888) (Echinodera (Echinodera)), Lectotype described as Acalles horridulusingowolfi Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Echinodera)), spec. n.pseudovariegata Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Echinodera)), spec. n.romanboroveci Stüben, 1998 (Echinodera (Echinodera)), spec. n.anatolica (Caldara, 1978) (Ruteria), comb. n. hitherto Echinodera (?) anatolicabellieri (Reiche, 1860) (Ruteria), comb. n. hitherto Acalles bellierigraeca (Caldara, 1973) (Ruteria), comb. n. hitherto Echinodera (?) graecahypocrita (Bohemann, 1837) (Ruteria), comb. n. hitherto Acalles hipocritusnormandi (A. & F.
